Summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2023 Freightliner
108SD, 114SD, Business Class M2, Cascadia, 2023 Freightliner
FCCC MC, MT45, S2C 106CAB, XCM, S2RV 106CAB, XCR, XCS, and 2023 Western Star
4700, 49X, and 47X vehicles. The engine control module (ECM) may experience an internal short-circuit, which can result in an unexpected engine shut down.
Remedy
Cummins will replace the ECM, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed September 26, 2022. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL-949.

Cummins Vitesco ECU Quality Spill (Companion Campaign)
Cummins has begun notifying its customers and repair locations of a safety related defect that exists in certain chassis manufactured by Freightliner
Custom Chassis Corporation which have been delivered to your
company.
A remedy without charge is now available, and owners may take their vehicle to a Cummins Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to have the recall performed. The Important Campaign Information (ICI) letter which includes a copy of the Cummins
owner letter, along with a French translation, is attached to the email you have received. A list of potentially affected vehicles delivered to your company is also attached.
Your company may have an obligation to notify its dealers, distributors, and customers of this recall under Title 49 Code of Federal Regulations Part 577.13 and/or Motor Vehicle Safety Act Section 10(1).

Chronology :
On July 11, 2022, Cummins notified DTNA Compliance of 10 documented occurrences of ECM communication failure on DTNA vehicles powered by specific Cummins
engines. DTNA immediately began an investigation to learn about failure modes and the detectability of such failure modes. In parallel with DTNA’s investigation, as DTNA understands, Cummins
had already been investigating the issue. On July 22, 2022, Cummins
informed DTNA of an impending equipment recall. DTNA on July 25, 2022, immediately issued a recall out of an abundance of caution.

DTNA immediately began an investigation to learn about failure modes and the detectability of such failure modes. In parallel with DTNA’s investigation, as DTNA understands, Cummins had already been investigating the issue. On July 22, 2022, Cummins informed DTNA of an impending equipment recall. DTNA on July 25, 2022, immediately issued a recall out of an abundance of caution. DTNA amended the 573 filing on October 5, 2022 to reflect Cummins’ provision of a remedy plan.
