Dear Altec Owner,
For US owners, this notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. For Canadian owners, this notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
Altec Industries, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in various AT series aerial devices built on Ford chassis from March 2017 to September 2019. These units contain a +12V wire routed from the chassis ignition splice to an accessory that receives power when the ignition is on. If this wire becomes damaged and shorted to ground, it will cause a chassis fuse to blow, shutting off the engine. This will cause a loss of power assist to the vehicle’s braking and steering systems. Death or serious injury could result from unexpected loss of power assist to the vehicle’s braking and steering systems.
Refer to the included notice for the items covered under the Altec Warranty Policy. If you had this repair performed before you received this notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. All work will be performed at no charge to the customer when presented for repair.
Compare your unit’s identifying information with the provided list to verify your unit is affected. You may also contact Altec or view your fleet through Altec Connect to determine if there are any other outstanding notices.
The repair must be performed by Altec. It is expected to take 2 hours to complete. Altec will also update the unit’s electrical schematic to reflect the changes to the wiring.
If you have sold or retired the unit, update the records through Altec Connect. If you have leased this equipment to another person or company, you are required by Federal Law to forward a copy of this notice to the lessee by first class mail within ten (10) days of the receipt of this notice.
For US owners: After contacting Altec, if you are still not able to have the safety condition remedied without charge and within a reasonable time, you may submit a complaint to: Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Avenue SE, Washington, DC 20590 or call toll-free 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153) or go to http://www.safercar.gov.
For Canadian Owners: If you are still not able to have the safety condition remedied by your dealer within a reasonable time, please contact Altec.
We regret this inconvenience; however, we are taking this action in the interest of your safety and continued satisfaction with Altec products.
Thank you for your immediate attention on this important matter.
Chronology :
In July of 2021, Altec received a complaint of a chassis losing power during aerial device operation. The root cause was identified as a blown fuse in the ignition circuit due to a compromised insulation on the boom stow wiring.
In January 2022, a review of service records identified incidents that had occurred on two units built in the 2018 timeframe. These incidents resulted in the loss of chassis power. The incidents occurred in July 2021 and September 2021. A Potential Field Action investigation was opened on January 21, 2022, to investigate further and determine the cause of the failures.
Although no further instances of this failure mode have been identified, on July 29, 2022, Altec determined that a potential defect was present in a certain field population and determined that a field campaign was required.
There have been no additional warranty claims or field reports identified. There have been no accidents, injuries, or deaths related to this issue.

The recall population was determined from a review of production records. Production Dates : MAR 15, 2017 – APR 22, 2021 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : A wire routed to the boom stow sensor is supplied with 12-volt power whenever the ignition is on. This wire could be routed over a sharp edge. Road travel and machine use could cause the wire to rub across the sharp edge until the outer jacket of the wire has been compromised. If the wire contacts the metal edge, a short to ground will occur, causing the ignition circuit fuse to blow, opening the circuit. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the ignition circuit fuse blows and opens the ignition circuit, the chassis will lose engine power. This can happen at any state of chassis operation, park or while in gear. Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : During an annual inspection of wire routing, the chaffing of wires could be identified. There is no other warning that a short could occur. Address : 2106 S Riverside Rd Saint Joseph Missouri 64507-2535 Country : United States Chronology : In July of 2021, Altec received a complaint of a chassis losing power during aerial device operation. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : An ignition-hot relay will be used to provide power to boom out of stow sensor. The remedy adds a relay to the circuit to ensure the chassis wiring will be unaffected if the boom stow circuit is shorted to ground and the power supply to the relay will be fused separately from the ignition circuit. The recall remedy will be completed free of charge when presented for repair. The Altec Warranty Policy covers the recall remedy, including cases requiring reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall.
