Potential Number of Units Affected 1,586
Summary
Ducati North America (Ducati
) is recalling certain 2016-2018 Hyperstrada 939, Hypermotard 939, and Hypermotard 939 SP motorcycles. The two oil cooler hoses could contact each other and become damaged, which could cause an oil leak.
Remedy
Dealers will install an oil cooler hose spacer, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 28, 2022. Owners may contact Ducati customer service at 1-888-391-5446. Ducati
’s number for this recall is SRV-RCL-22-002.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
This bulletin has been produced due to a potential problem associated with the rubbing of the oil cooler delivery and return hoses, which could lead to damage and oil leakage from the hoses. A new component, spacer (A) (Part no. 8291K191A), has been made to be placed between the hoses and inside the hose grommet (1), to prevent the contact described above.
The spacer (A) (Part no. 8291K191A) must be installed only on motorcycles equipped with hose grommet (1).
Customer Impact
All motorcycles in your inventory (to be registered or already registered) and to be delivered to final Customers must be updated during pre-delivery operations and always before delivery to the final Customer. All motorcycles already delivered to final Customers must undergo this inspection as soon as they come to your workshop.
Parts Distribution
The components with part no. 8291K191A required to carry out the upgrade under this Safety Recall Campaign must be ordered for each affected frame number.
Chronology :
On October 2021 Ducati has received a report from the field about an oil leaking form the oil cooler hoses, and after started the investigation.
During this investigation, Ducati became aware of a total worldwide of 19 field cases, of which eight cases from USA.
None of these cases involved any crash or injuries.
The result of the investigation has defined the root cause as in rare cases, multiple particular condition of use and after considerable mileage of motorcycle use, the two oil cooler hoses could contact between them and eventually damage.
Ducati has identified the motorcycles that could have been affected by the problem.
On September 20, 2022, Ducati Motor Holding’s internal safety commission decided to launch a recall campaign to address this condition in the affected population.

FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the defect occurs, the oil cooler hoses could be damaged and cause an oil leak. The oil leaking could drip on the rear tire increasing the risk of crash or injury. Ducati has never received reports of crash or injuries. Description of the Cause : The oil cooler hoses are kept in place with a dedicated clamp support that could not guarantee a correct distance between the two hoses, with the result Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-704 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 that during motorcycle operation could increase the rubbing and a possible oil cooler hose damage. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : If the defect occurs, the oil could start to gradually seep from one cooler hose, causing leakage. The rider could find traces of oil on the floor when the motorcycle is parked. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Oil cooler hoses spacer Component Description : Original hoses clamp support did not provide sufficient separation of the two hoses. Therefore we’ve added a dedicated spacer. Component Part Number : 8291K191A Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : NR Address : NR NR Country : NR Chronology : On October 2021 Ducati has received a report from the field about an oil leaking form the oil cooler hoses, and after started the investigation. During this investigation, Ducati became aware of a total worldwide of 19 field cases, of which eight cases from USA. The date range of these claims is from May 2017 to March 2022. None of these cases involved any crash or accidents. None of these cases involved any deaths and/or injuries. The result of the investigation has defined the root cause as in rare cases, multiple particular condition of use and after considerable mileage of motorcycle use, the two oil cooler hoses could contact between them and eventually damage. Ducati has identified the motorcycles that could have been affected by the problem. On September 20, 2022, Ducati Motor Holding’s internal safety commission decided to launch a recall Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-704 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 campaign to address this condition in the affected population.
