A fuel leak increases the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22E093
Manufacturer INTERNATIONAL THERMAL RESEARCH
Components FUEL SYSTEM, DIESEL
Potential Number of Units Affected 179
Summary
International Thermal Research (ITR) is recalling certain Oasis Chinook Hydronic Heaters, with part number 59600. The heaters may have an air line installed instead of a fuel line, which can cause a fuel leak.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the fuel line as needed, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed November 7, 2022. Owners may contact ITR customer service at 1-604-278-1272.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Please be reminded of the following requirements:
You are required to submit a draft owner notification letter to this office no less than five days prior to mailing it to the customers. Also, copies of all notices, bulletins, dealer notifications, and other communications that relate to this recall, including a copy of the final owner notification letter and any subsequent owner follow-up notification letter(s), are required to be submitted to this office no later than 5 days after they are originally sent (if they are sent to more than one manufacturer, distributor, dealer, or purchaser/owner).
Please be reminded that under 49 U.S.C. ยง 30112(a)(3), it is illegal for a manufacturer, to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect. This prohibition does not apply once the motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment has been remedied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
As stated in Part 573.7, submission of the first of eight consecutive quarterly status reports is required within one month after the close of the calendar quarter in which notification to purchasers occurs. Therefore, the first quarterly report will be due on, or before, 30 days after the close of the calendar quarter.
Short description of problem:
It was recently discovered that a general purpose hose was inadvertantly used in place of the ยผโ fuel line in ITRโs powered heaters. It is unclear in which models this general purpose line was installed, but it would be within the range of the date codes in the above serial numbers.
The above fuel line is the correct type. It has โFUEL LINE SAE30R7โ marked on it. The incorrect hose can be identified by either marking of โVALUFLEX/GSโ or by what appear to be holes in the hose as shown below.
This hose is subject to leaking. If a heater is discovered to have this hose, it must be changed out with the appropriate fuel line as per the instructions below.
Step 1:
Press the power button and make sure the Power LED has turned off. Wait until the combustion fan turns off. This will take 2-4 minutes.
Step 2:
Remove these screws to gain access to the inside of the heater.
Step 3:
1. Place a rag underneath the wires to protect them from getting damaged on the edge of the bottom tray, and fold down the front cover.
2. Place a spacer underneath the front cover to ensure the buttons don’t get pushed accidentally during service.
Step 4:
Remove the three screws from the combustion fan intake and pull it down and out to provide better access to the fuel line.
Step 5:
1. Mark the fuel inlet line and clamp off the fuel inlet and return lines above the quick connects.
2. Push the grey button on the quick disconnect fittings and pull them apart, using a rag to catch any fuel that spills.
Step 6:
1. Using angled needle nose pliers, move the clamp off both fuel pump fittings and pull out both generic hoses, using a rag to catch any fuel that spills.
2. Install the proper fuel lines and clamp them in place. You will need to use silicone spray to get the fuel lines to slide through the grommets.
3. Connect the clamped off fuel lines to the newly installed fuel lines, being careful to connect the marked fuel line to the fuel inlet connection.
Step 7:
1. Re-install the combustion fan inlet collar and put the combustion hose back in place.
2. Turn on the power button and turn on the burner and check the newly installed fuel lines for leaks while the burner is running.
3. Once it has been confirmed that no leaks are present at any of the fuel line fittings, close up the front cover.
Chronology :
On February 10, 2022, International Thermal Research (ITR) was informed of a series of fuel line leaks in the Chinook heaters by Newmar
Corporation. Using the pictures supplied by Newmar
, it was determined that the incorrect fuel line was used in at least some of the Chinook heaters that were shipped to Newmar
. The same day, ITR made the decision to work with Newmar
to address this issue. After acquiring the contact information for the dealers and customers with the affected units, ITR started reaching out to the dealers and customers on February 17, 2022.
