What is the purpose of the I-22-06 Safety Recall?
Indian Motorcycle has determined that some Model Year 2022 Chief and Model Year 2021-2022 Scout motorcycles may experience a failure at the fuel pump during operation. If this occurs, the engine may stall increasing the risk of a crash and serious injury.
To address this concern, Indian Motorcycle has released this safety recall with instructions to replace the fuel pump with an improved part.
What make & model year is included in this Safety Recall?
Some 2022 Chief models and 2021-2022 Scout models.
How can a dealer see which unregistered units in inventory are impacted by this?
- Login to the dealer website (DEX).
- Locate the โService and Warrantyโ dropdown, click on STOP Site.
- On the left-hand side of the page, under โSTOP Site Links,โ click on โService Communicationsโ.
- Locate the link for the bulletin of interest and click on the โAll VINsโ link located on the right.
- The โAll VINsโ page will display all affected VINs within your dealershipโs inventory.
NOTE: Unit Inquiry can always be used to check an individual VIN.
Will Indian Motorcycle notify consumers?
Yes. Indian Motorcycle will notify consumers of the repair release by email and follow-up with a mailed notification letter.
Should dealers notify consumers?
Yes. Dealers should follow their standard process for contacting consumers regarding recall work on their affected vehicles. Dealers should reference the STOP site for a list of their dealershipโs affected VINs.
Is training required before ordering parts or filing claims for this Safety Recall?
Yes. A required training was added with the April 13, 2023 update. Polaris requires one technician from a dealership to be certified before parts ordering may occur and two technicians to be certified before warranty claims may be processed. Refer to I-22-06 โ Safety Recall โ Fuel Pump on the University of Polaris
.
Is this a STOP SALE
Yes. This is a STOP SALE. All impacted units, new and used, in dealer inventory cannot be retailed until the repair is complete.
What Dealers CAN Do
- Can quote new products.
- Can accept deposits from consumers as a reservation for a future sale.
- Can utilize PCDX to begin setup and PDI (except for test ride).
- Can, and should, warranty register impacted product that was delivered to consumers prior to the release of the stop sale to ensure Indian
Motorcycle has accurate records and can notify the customer if required.
What Dealers CANNOT Do
- Cannot complete a sale.
- Cannot deliver impacted products to consumers.
- Cannot allow a consumer to purchase and take an affected product.
- Cannot warranty register an affected vehicle (unless delivered to the consumer prior to the release of the stop sale).
- Cannot hold customersโ vehicles in service against their will.
What parts are required to update the vehicles affected by this recall, and will dealers need to order them? Chief models require; a new fuel pump (Part Number 2522501), fuel pump seal (Part Number 5414830) and a cable tie (Part Number 7080138).
Scout models require; a new fuel pump (Part Number 2521733), and a fuel pump seal (Part Number 5414830). Dealers will need to order each part individually as needed. There is no parts kit for I-22-06.
What if parts are showing on backorder or not available?
Dealers should still place orders for the quantities required. Itโs important to get all orders entered into the system so Polaris can track demand and keep parts shipping to dealers.
Are the parts returnable if a dealer over orders?
No. Indian Motorcycleโs standard RMA policy excludes the return of Safety Recall parts.
What should dealers do with service parts in dealer inventory?
Dealers should review their service parts inventory according to the procedure outlined in I-22-06 and ensure that they are disposed of properly. Refer to the recall for detailed instructions on how to review and file a Parts Stock claim for affected inventory parts.
- 2522501, 2521733
Will Dealers have all the appropriate tools to complete this Safety Recall?
A tool list has been provided in the I-22-06 Safety Recall instructions.
Will dealers be paid for performing this Safety Recall?
Yes. Dealers will be reimbursed for the cost of parts and labor to perform the recall.
Can I allow demos on vehicles that havenโt had I-22-06 performed?
Yes. This is NOT a Stop Ride, so vehicles that havenโt had the update performed can still be driven (both consumer and dealer vehicles). However, we recommend providing demo rides on vehicles that have had the update completed, and therefore can be retailed immediately.
How does a dealer warranty register a unit that a customer has paid for and taken delivery of PRIOR to the STOP SALE announcement?
The warranty registration capability is disabled for all units affected by the stop sale. If the unit has not been paid for, or if the unit has not yet been delivered to the customer, you should retrieve or hold the unit until repairs have been completed.
In the event that a warranty registration must be completed, please submit an Ask Polaris case using Sales Question > Wholegoods Question and include the following:
- Completed PCDX Customer Information and Customer Delivery form
- Sales invoices: Paper & DMS
- Copies of form of payment document or payment check
- Copies of purchaserโs identification
- Copies of the state registration forms unless the registration was VERY recent, and this has not yet been obtained
- The promo selection for the unit (Program Number, Rebate Amount, Promotional Financing, etc.)
- Salespersonโs First Name and Last Name and My Polaris
Rewards Username to award points or spiffs.
* Warranty Registrations that are received and processed by Indian Motorcycle more than three (3) days after the date of the retail delivery of the unit to the customer will not qualify for any financial incentives and may be assessed a $300 late fee.

Chronology :
In August 2022, as part of Indian Motorcycleโs routine review of warranty claims, Indian
Motorcycle identified an increased rate of fuel pump failures. Thereafter, Indian
Motorcycle began an investigation, which included outreach to the fuel pump supplier, inspection of failed fuel pumps from units in the field and testing performed internally.
In October 2022, Indian Motorcycle learned from the fuel pump supplier that beginning in March 2021, the impeller within the fuel pump was manufactured thicker than the engineering specification, which could result in fuel pump failure during operation. This was a known quality issue that was previously identified by the supplier, but not communicated to Indian
Motorcycle at the time.
During the investigation, Indian Motorcycle identified 180 reports of fuel pump failures, including 26 reports of engine stalls. Indian
Motorcycle has not identified any reports involving a crash, injuries, or deaths related to this reported issue, and has not identified any associated NDFRs.
On November 4, 2022, Indian Motorcycleโs Executive Review Committee decided that the fuel pump failure during operation resulting in an engine stall resulted in a safety-related defect.

Huko Hsiang Foreign States 303 Country : China Chronology : In August 2022, as part of Indian Motorcycleโs routine review of warranty claims, Indian Motorcycle identified an increased rate of fuel pump failures. Thereafter, Indian Motorcycle began an investigation, which included outreach to the fuel pump supplier, inspection of failed fuel pumps from units in the field and testing performed internally. In October 2022, Indian Motorcycle learned from the fuel pump supplier that beginning in March 2021, the impeller within the fuel pump was manufactured thicker than the engineering specification, which could result in fuel pump failure during operation. This was a known quality issue that was previously identified by the supplier, but not communicated to Indian Motorcycle at the time. During the investigation, Indian Motorcycle identified 180 reports of fuel pump failures, including 26 reports of engine stalls. The reports were received from June 2021 through October 2022; however, a statistically significant increase in fuel pump failures was first observed in July 2022. Indian Motorcycle determined that the suspect fuel pumps were produced by the supplier from March 2021 through September 2021. Indian Motorcycle has not identified any reports involving a crash, injuries, or deaths related to this reported issue, and has not identified any associated NDFRs. On November 4, 2022, Indian Motorcycleโs Executive Review Committee decided that the fuel pump failure during operation resulting in an engine stall resulted in a safety-related defect. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Indian Motorcycle will inform dealers of the reported concern and provide instructions to dealers to replace the fuel pump and fuel pump seal at no cost to consumers. Customers who paid to replace or service their vehicle for this condition prior to the recall notification may be eligible for reimbursement per Indian Motorcycleโs General Recall Reimbursement Plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy fuel pump will be manufactured subject to improved quality controls at the supplier and consistent with the engineering specifications. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : As of November 8, 2022, Indian Motorcycle stopped shipment of units with the suspect fuel pump and shipment will only resume when the updated fuel pump is available.
