McLaren Automotive Incorporated (McLaren
) is recalling certain 2023 Artura vehicles. The nuts for the high pressure fuel pipe may loosen, which can result in a fuel leak.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the high pressure fuel pipes, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed December 27, 2022. Owners may contact McLaren customer service at 1-646-429-8916.

1. Customer Notification Process
McLaren commenced the mailings of letters (example attached) to owners of affected vehicles on Tuesday 20 December 2022. In line with National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) and Transport Canada as the case may be, notification letters to owners must be issued in the first instance and follow on communications can then be sent via email or other contact methods.
2. Immediate Action Required
Beginning on Tuesday 20 December 2022, Retailers must contact customers and make service appointments as soon as reasonably practical. Repairs are to be performed by any McLaren Authorised Retailer regardless of where the vehicle was purchased. Retailers must not refuse to repair a vehicle because it was not purchased from their location.
3. Overview
McLaren have launched a voluntary safety recall on the affected vehicles listed in section 7 of this bulletin.
The covered vehicles may have been fitted with an incorrect high pressure fuel pipe which could cause a fuel leak and as a result an increased risk of thermal activity.
Customers may continue to use their vehicle until it is brought in to have the procedure completed. Based on all of the information available to us, covered vehicles can continue to be driven under standard road conditions. However, we would recommend the repairs are carried out as soon as possible. McLaren are only aware of this issue occurring under heavy vehicle load such as track driving, which we would recommend is avoided until the remedial action is carried out.
If a customer reports a strong abnormal fuel smell or identifies a fuel leak, the Retailer shall:
- Advise the customer to immediately cease using the vehicle.
- Immediately inform your Regional Aftersales Manager and provide all such information as they may request.
- Make arrangements for the vehicle to be transported to the Retailer and, if required provide a loan vehicle to the customer. If a loan vehicle is not available within the Retailer, contact the Client Services team for further support.

4. Procedure
To complete the required work by this Recall Campaign please carry out the following steps:
a. Inspect the engine serial number. To access the engine serial number please follow SIS Procedure number: โHA-RM-01A004-02-001 – Remove/Install Floor panel โ Engineโ

a. Check the engine serial number found on the vehicle against the engine serial number list attached with this Campaign Bulletin
b. If the engine serial number found in the vehicle is not in the engine serial number list attached with this Recall Campaign Bulletin, mark this Recall Campaign as completed for the vehicle by submitting the preapproved Warranty claim attached to its VIN in the Retailer Portal. Please attach clear photos of the VIN number and engine serial number for each vehicle checked in the Warranty claim
c. If the engine serial number found in the vehicle is in the engine serial number list attached with this Recall Campaign Bulletin then proceed to replace both (RH bank and LH bank) GDI high pressure fuel pipes.
Documents โHA-RM-05F001-01-065 GDI pipe pump to rail LHโ and โHA-RM-05F001-01-066 GDI pipe pump to rail RHโ (attached with this bulletin) contain the relevant work instructions and care points to ensure the inspection and potential re-work is carried out to bring the vehicle up to the current manufacturing standard.
McLaren will auto-issue a specific digital torque wrench with an adaptor and crowfoot attachment for Retailers to complete the rework with. It is imperative that Retailer Technicians use only this specific McLaren
auto-issued toolset for the assembly of the GDI high pressure fuel pipes.
Please attach clear photos of the VIN number and engine serial number for each vehicle checked in the Warranty claim.
CARE POINT: Retailers with affected vehicles must complete this Recall Campaign and potential rework prior to any vehicle customer handover
5. Parts Information
The below parts are required to action this rework and replace both GDI high pressure fuel pipes. All parts in the list below can be ordered in the usual way via Unidial 2.

The specification for the fuel injection system on the vehicle originally called for a fully machined nut to be used. However, during March 2021, the nut supplier notified McLaren of an imminent stock shortage of fully machined nuts and proposed a switch to cold formed nuts, which were already used widely by their other customers. The cold formed nuts had been successfully validated by the nut supplier and in durability testing performed by McLaren
.
In June 2022, a vehicle with approximately 1000km of road use was driven on a race circuit, and a fuel leak occurred. Upon inspection, it was found that the cold formed nut of the left-hand highpressure fuel pipe had loosened at the pump outlet connection.
McLaren immediately commenced an investigation. This investigation concluded that the cold formed nut had been attached with insufficient torque. To address this issue, McLaren
developed and validated a bespoke tightening procedure for the cold formed nuts.
McLaren reworked all the vehicles which had cold formed nuts using the bespoke tightening procedure. Note, at this point, the vehicle was not yet been launched for sale to the general public so no vehicles produced with the original tightening procedure were ever released to the public.
In September 2022, McLaren began using fuel pipes with fully machined nuts on its production line. McLaren
chose to take this action because the fully machined nuts were back in stock and did not require the bespoke tightening procedure that was required for the cold formed nuts.
At the beginning of November 2022, a different vehicle with approximately 2800km of road use was driven on a race circuit by a McLaren professional driver, and a fuel leak occurred. Upon inspection, it was found that the cold formed nut of the left-hand high-pressure fuel pipe had loosened at the pump outlet connection.
McLarenโs investigation during the course of November 2022 found that the second vehicle had had the bespoke tightening procedure applied to the cold formed nuts. As such, McLaren
โs earlier conclusion that the root cause of the problem was insufficient torque had to be revisited and reassessed. McLaren
has now concluded that the root cause of the problem is the use of a cold formed nut, which potentially can loosen when subjected to vehicle loads, in particular during dynamic driving manoeuvres commonly associated with track running.
Although there have not been any injuries reported to McLaren in relation to this issue, nor any incidents on public roads — only the ones described above on race circuits — McLaren
has decided to conduct a safety recall to address this issue.

FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the nut becomes loose, the seal between the end flare of the fuel pipe and the sealing cone of the pump outlet may be disrupted, leading to the release of fuel. The end flare of the fuel pipe is situated close to engine components which have a high operating temperature. If fuel is released in proximity to these components, it could result in thermal activity. Description of the Cause : McLaren has determined the cause to be the type of nut that was used to secure the fuel pipe to the gasoline direct injection fuel pump. The nut on the affected vehicles is a cold formed nut with rolled threads. McLaren considers this to be due to a low coefficient of friction as a result of the process used to manufacture a cold formed nut compared to the process used to manufacture a fully machined nut. However, during March 2021, the nut supplier notified McLaren of an imminent stock shortage of fully machined nuts and proposed a switch to cold formed nuts, which were already used widely by their other customers. The cold formed nuts had been successfully validated by the nut supplier and in durability testing performed by McLaren. In June 2022, a vehicle with approximately 1000km of road use was driven on a race circuit, and a fuel leak occurred. Upon inspection, it was found that the cold formed nut of the left-hand high-pressure fuel pipe had loosened at the pump outlet connection. McLaren immediately commenced an investigation. This investigation concluded that the cold formed nut had been attached with insufficient torque. To address this issue, McLaren developed and validated a bespoke tightening procedure for the cold formed nuts. McLaren reworked all the vehicles which had cold formed nuts using the bespoke tightening procedure. Note, at this point, the vehicle was not yet been launched for sale to the general public so no vehicles produced with the original tightening procedure were ever released to the public. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-908 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 In September 2022, McLaren began using fuel pipes with fully machined nuts on its production line. McLaren chose to take this action because the fully machined nuts were back in stock and did not require the bespoke tightening procedure that was required for the cold formed nuts. At the beginning of November 2022, a different vehicle with approximately 2800km of road use was driven on a race circuit by a McLaren professional driver, and a fuel leak occurred. Upon inspection, it was found that the cold formed nut of the left-hand high-pressure fuel pipe had loosened at the pump outlet connection. CHRONOLOGY IS CONTINUED IN THE “MANUFACTURER COMMENTS TO NHTSA STAFF” FIELD BELOW Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : McLaren will replace the high-pressure fuel pipes, which are equipped with 15mm cold formed nuts with rolled threads, with new high-pressure fuel pipes equipped with 16.5mm fully machined nuts with cut threads. This remedy will be carried out at no charge to the customer. Since all of the covered vehicles are covered by warranty, there is no need for a reimbursement program. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The fully machined nuts with cut threads have a higher coefficient of friction than the cold formed nuts with rolled threads. Immediate Action Required Beginning on Tuesday 20 December 2022, Retailers must contact customers and make service appointments as soon as reasonably practical. Repairs are to be performed by any McLaren Authorised Retailer regardless of where the vehicle was purchased. Retailers must not refuse to repair a vehicle because it was not purchased from their location. 3. Overview McLaren have launched a voluntary safety recall on the affected vehicles listed in section 7 of this bulletin. The covered vehicles may have been fitted with an incorrect high pressure fuel pipe which could cause a fuel leak and as a result an increased risk of thermal activity. Customers may continue to use their vehicle until it is brought in to have the procedure completed. Based on all of the information available to us, covered vehicles can continue to be driven under standard road conditions. However, we would recommend the repairs are carried out as soon as possible. McLaren are only aware of this issue occurring under heavy vehicle load such as track driving, which we would recommend is avoided until the remedial action is carried out. If a customer reports a strong abnormal fuel smell or identifies a fuel leak, the Retailer shall: 1. Advise the customer to immediately cease using the vehicle. 2. Production Dates : OCT 08, 2021 – NOV 14, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : SBM16AEA3PW000177 End : SBM16AEA1PW000372 โ Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The cold formed nuts of the high-pressure fuel pipes can potentially loosen from the male threaded outlet connection of the gasoline direct injection fuel pump when subjected to vehicle loads, in particular during dynamic driving manoeuvres commonly associated with track running. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the nut becomes loose, the seal between the end flare of the fuel pipe and the sealing cone of the pump outlet may be disrupted, leading to the release of fuel. The end flare of the fuel pipe is situated close to engine components which have a high operating temperature. If fuel is released in proximity to these components, it could result in thermal activity. Description of the Cause : McLaren has determined the cause to be the type of nut that was used to secure the fuel pipe to the gasoline direct injection fuel pump. The nut on the affected vehicles is a cold formed nut with rolled threads. McLaren considers this to be due to a low coefficient of friction as a result of the process used to manufacture a cold formed nut compared to the process used to manufacture a fully machined nut.
