Summary
Yokohama Tire Corporation (Yokohama Tire) is recalling certain TY517 MC2 tires, size 295/75R22.5 16H, and BluEarth 109L tires, size 295/75R22.5 14G, with DOT date code 2222. The tires may have been produced with an incorrectly manufactured rubber compound, which can cause the rubber adhesion to fail and result in tread separation. As such, these tires fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 119, “New Pneumatic Tires- Other than Passenger Cars.”
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the affected tires, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed January 30, 2023. Owners may contact Yokohama’s customer service at 1-800-423-4544.

Yokohama Tire Corporation is initiating a voluntary recall of certain tires manufactured in The West Point, MS plant in May and June 2022. These tires may have been manufactured with an out-of-specification tread base compound. There is potential for a portion of the tread to separate from the casing of the tire increasing the risk of a crash. Yokohama will replace the subject tires at no charge to consumers.

The tires subject to this recall may have been produced with an improperly manufactured tread base rubber compound. The rubber adhesion may be inadequate, resulting in a separation of the tread from the casing of the tire

In the case a dual assembly affected, Yokohama will allow both tires in the dual assembly to be replaced with new Yokohama tires.

Submit the eligible removed tires under the Yokohama standard limited warranty procedures and state,
โTread Base Compound Recallโ on the Standard Warranty Claim Form as the reason for removal. Additional Standard Warranty Claim Forms can be requested by e-mail at marketingmaterials@yokohamatire.com.
Affix corresponding tire identification stickers to the tread portion of claim tires. For example, the sticker numbered G12345-1 would be placed on the tire listed as line item #1 on claim form number G12345. Sticker number G12345-2 would be placed on the tire listed as line item #2, and so on.
For new tires remove the new tire tread label prior to shipping.
White copy of the Standard Warranty Claim Form is to be placed in an envelope and secured to the tire(s) Tires may be shipped with other warranty submissions or separately using the normal warranty return procedure. Alternate shipping can be arranged by contacting the recall campaign call center (contact info below).
If eligible tire(s) are confirmed by Yokohama, free replacement credit will be granted for identical (or substantially similar Yokohama part at Yokohamaโs discretion). Tread depth proration credit will be granted if non-Yokohama brand tires are installed. In addition to the regular warranty claim handling allowances defined in the Yokohama warranty claims procedure manual, a $30 per tire mounting allowance will also be credited.

Chronology :
Best One reported 2 TY517 MC2 tires for warranty claim. The tires had been installed in the drive position on a fleet owned by First Choice Logistics.
The tread detachment was noticed by the fleet maintenance personnel. The tires were removed and submitted to Best One for the warranty claim.
The YTC Commercial Sales rep reviewed the tires and submitted the claim. Photos of the claim tire were reviewed by the Yokohama Warranty Inspection Supervisor and forwarded to CQA on 11/4/22.
CQA issued a product hold on 11/7/22 for this part number and DOT week 2222. The product hold was expanded to all production weeks of this part number on 11/9/22.
The warranty tires were shipped to the manufacturing plant YTMM and received on 11/15/22.
After an initial investigation, the tires were shipped to Japan for detailed analysis.
The tires arrived in Japan 11/24/22. Investigation and chemical analysis were begun in the week of 11/28.
On 12/9/2022, the Market Measures Committee reviewed the results of the investigation and the product hold was expanded to include a 2nd part number, but limited to a single week of production. The MMC forwarded their recommendation to the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee determined that a defect existed that met the requirements of a potential risk to vehicle safety on 12/12/2022.

Yokohama will replace free of charge any tires subject to this recall with tires of comparable value. This replacement includes the cost of mounting and balancing the replacement tires. In the case of a dual assembly, Yokohama will allow both tires in the dual assembly to be replaced with new Yokohama tires. If you choose to replace your tires subject to this recall with another manufacturerโs tires, instead of receiving Yokohama replacement tires, Yokohama will offer a pro-rated tread depth credit of the original purchase price. Dealers are asked to identify and return to Yokohama Tire Corporation any tires subject to this recall that they may have in stock. Please be reminded that it is a violation of Federal law for you to sell or lease the above Commercial tires covered by this notification. Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law. Dealers are also asked to assist end-users in identifying if they have tires subject to this recall on their vehicles. If tires subject to this recall are found on the end-userโs vehicle, dealers are asked to remove these tires and replace them with Yokohama or other brand tires of comparable value. WHAT WE WILL DO
Yokohama will compensate dealers for the inspection and replacement of all tires subject to this recall, as well as for any tires not subject to this recall but require replacement according to the scenarios described above. If eligible tire(s) are confirmed by Yokohama, free replacement credit will be granted for identical or available functionally similar Yokohama tires (at Yokohamaโs discretion).

Description of the Defect : The tires subject to this recall may have been produced with an improperly manufactured rubber compound. The rubber adhesion may be inadequate, resulting in a separation of the tread from the tire casing.

Description of the Safety Risk : Portions of the tire tread may separate from the casing, increasing the risk of a crash. In small separations, a vibration may be present. If left in service, the separation could grow and result in tread detachment.
Description of the Cause : A batch of tread base rubber compound was improperly manufactured with a low level of sulfur that prevented proper curing of the rubber compound. Identification of Any Warning

Country : United States Chronology : The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22T-024 Page 3 Best One reported 2 TY517 MC2 tires for warranty claim. The tires had been installed in the drive position on a fleet owned by First Choice Logistics.
The tread detachment was noticed by the fleet maintenance personnel. The tires were removed and submitted to Best One for the warranty claim.
The YTC Commercial Sales rep reviewed the tires and submitted the claim. Photos of the claim tire were reviewed by the Yokohama Warranty Inspection Supervisor and forwarded to CQA on 11/4/22.
CQA issued a product hold on 11/7/22 for this part number and DOT week 2222. The product hold was expanded to all production weeks of this part number on 11/9/22.
The warranty tires were shipped to the manufacturing plant YTMM and received on 11/15/22. After an initial investigation, the tires were shipped to Japan for detailed analysis.
The tires arrived in Japan 11/24/22. Investigation and chemical analysis were begun in the week of 11/28.
On 12/9/2022, the Market Measures Committee reviewed the results of the investigation and the product hold was expanded to include a 2nd part number, but limited to a single week of production. The MMC forwarded their recommendation to the Executive Committee. The Executive Committee determined that a defect existed that met the requirements of a potential risk to vehicle safety on 12/12/2022. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Yokohama will compensate dealers for the inspection and replacement of
all tires subject to this recall. Yokohama will replace free of charge any tires subject to this recall with tires of comparable value. This replacement includes the cost of mounting and balancing the replacement tires. If the owner chooses to replace their tires with another manufacturerโs tires, instead of receiving Yokohama replacement tires, Yokohama will offer a pro-rated tread depth credit of the original purchase price. If an owner has already incurred costs in order to remedy a tire within the recall population, Yokohama will reimburse those costs to include the inspection, replacement tire, mounting and balancing, as above. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Yokohama TY517 MC2 295/75R22.5 16H (Yokohama Part number 120151731), identified by TIN 1FABT YJAH 2222, and Yokohama BluEarth 109L 295/75R22.5 14G (Yokohama Part number 120110901), identified by TIN FABT JAW 2222, are the only recalled tires. The remedy tires will be from different production weeks, or from different manufacturing facilities (i.e., they will have a different Plant ID Code, or a different M Code in the TIN).
