Dear Kenworth Customer, Kenworth Truck Company has determined that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain Model Year 2021-2024 T280, T380, and T480 vehicles built from 06/17/2020 through 01/17/2023. The brake pedal plunger may become dislodged when the brake pedal is fully depressed and rapidly released. This can prevent the driver from applying the service brakes, increasing the risk of a crash. No audible or visual warning is available. The risk of the brake plunger dislodging may be reduced by slowly releasing the service brakes and not allowing the pedal to release rapidly.
Kenworth has initiated a recall to remedy the defect in cooperation with Bendix. Repair parts and procedures are now available. Contact your Kenworth dealer to schedule repairs. The repair will take approximately 1.0 hour depending on vehicle configuration and dealer scheduling. This repair will be performed at no charge to you. slip foot brake release). If the plunger in the brake pedal assembly dislodges, the driver may be unable to apply the service brakes, which may increase the risk of a crash.
Introduction It was observed on certain T280, T380, and T480 chassis with air brakes that the pedal plunger which connects the brake pedal to the brake valve, may become dislodged, when the pedal is fully depressed and released extremely rapidly (side slip foot brake release). The plunger dislodging in the brake pedal assembly may occur without warning and result in the driver being unable to apply the service brakes, which may increase the risk of a crash. Situation 4,209 (3,993 U.S. and 216 CAN) Model Year 2021-2024 T280, T380, and T480 chassis built between 06/17/2020 and 01/17/2023 with air brakes. Resolution Safety Recall Service all chassis affected that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis. 1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list. 2. In Service Management, select Campaign 23KWB to add it to the case. If the unit is released back into service without performing the repair, make sure to also release the Campaign in Service Management. 3. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” next to the
23KWB Campaign code prior to performing this repair. 4. Follow the attached procedures to install a brake pedal restraint. Federal Law
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.
Warranty There is no time or mileage limit for this recall. Kenworth will pay for parts at dealer net plus applicable mark­ up and labor: • 0.3 hours labor to install brake pedal retainer. The issue was able to be replicated at Paccar plants. Investigation opened. 01-25-23: Warranty search completed, and no relevant claims identified. Additional evaluations at other Paccar facilities were able to replicate the issue on 2.1m medium duty vehicles. 01-26-23: Rework procedure approved by Paccar and Bendix. Rework begins at plants. 02-08-23: Investigation details summarized and warranty search updated. No relevant claims identified. 02-09-23: Safety committee meeting held. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : The defect is remedied by adding a pedal restraint bracket. The bracket
limits the pedal travel in the rebound direction and the plunger cannot become dislocated or jammed. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed by the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The remedy agreed to by both Bendix and PACCAR includes the addition of a restraint bracket that limits the rebound travel of the pedal such that the pedal plunger cannot become dislocated or jammed.
The excessive gap between the pedal travel limit and the pedal was eliminated to prevent the pedal plunger from becoming disconnected or jammed. The condition was corrected in production for all vehicles built on or after January 18, 2023.
