Defective Belt Cushion Splice May Cause Air Loss
An air bubble in the sidewall may cause a rapid loss of air pressure and loss of vehicle control, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary
Yokohama Tire Corporation (Yokohama) is recalling certain 504C, size 11R22.5 16H tires. A defective belt cushion splice may allow air to leak into sidewall.
Remedy
Dealers will inspect and replace the affected tires, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed October 2, 2023. Owners may contact Yokohama’s customer service at 1-800-423-4544.

The defect areas was in a consistent location, indication it was related to an operator method, not a machine. The products related to 2 operators were ultimately included in the recall population. The time period was determined based on an examination of production records from X-Ray, L-Ray, and retained cross-sections. FMVSS 1 : 119 – New pneumatic tires- other than passenger cars FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If left in service, air may migrate into the sidewall causing an air bubble and may further lead to rapid air loss and possible loss of vehicle control. Description of the Cause : Tire Building Operator made an inadequate and improper Belt Cushion Splice. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : It is likely that an air bubble would develop and be visible on the sidewall of the tire. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23T-005 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 Involved Components : Component Name : NR Component Description : NR Component Part Number : NR Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Yokohama Tire Manufacturing Mississippi Address : 1 Yokohama Blvd West Point Mississippi 39773 Country : United States Chronology : NR Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Yokohama will compensate dealers for the inspection and replacement of all tires subject to this recall. Yokohama will replace free of charge any tires subject to this recall with tires of comparable value. This replacement includes the cost of mounting and balancing the replacement tires. If the owner chooses to replace their tires with another manufacturerโs tires, instead of receiving Yokohama replacement tires, Yokohama will offer a pro-rated tread depth credit of the original purchase price. If an owner has already incurred costs in order to remedy a tire within the recall population, Yokohama will reimburse those costs to include the inspection, replacement tire, mounting and balancing, as above. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The remedy tires will be from different production weeks, or from different manufacturing facilities (i.e., they will have a different Plant ID Code, or a different M Code in the TIN). Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : On 12/02/2022, a One Point Lesson for creating this splice at Tire Building was used to retrain operators. All operators were also retrained on the use of the Spread Cord Detector, and the judgement criteria for an acceptable splice.
