Continental Tire the Americas, LLC (โCTAโ) announced a voluntary recall involving 3,472 passenger tires after discovering that tires with contaminated rubber compound were sold into the USA market.
The affected tires may contain rubber compound contaminated with small metal fragments. A small metal fragment in the sidewall of the tire could cause damage to the textile carcass cords. Tires may develop a bulge in the sidewall.
The affected tires may experience a sudden loss of air pressure which could increase the risk of serious injury or death.
Chronology :
“April 3, 2023: Xray evaluation of tires manufactured in the Continental Cuenca, Ecuador plant resulted in an unusual high number of scrapped tires. It was determined that Zinc Oxide (ZnO) material used in the rubber mixing operation was contaminated with small metal fragments causing the Xray anomalies.
A quality hold was issued for all tires in the Andean region warehouses and a clean point for the ZnO material was established. Based on production traceability records, a sorting action began in the warehouses to locate the potentially affected tires. Potentially affected tires were segregated and scrapped.
Aug. 8, 2023: CTA determined that not all affected tires were identified during the warehouse sorting action. Some of the affected tires were sold in the Andean region and some tires were shipped to warehouses in the USA.
Aug. 9, 2023: A quality hold was placed on all inventory of Cuenca produced tires stored in the USA warehouses. A sorting action began to find the remaining affected tires.
September, 2023: It was determined that two tire articles with potentially affected tires were sold in the USA market.
On Sept. 25, 2023, Continental Tire’s Product Integrity Committee met and reviewed this matter. The Committee made a determination that a safety risk exists and therefore, to recall the affected tires in the USA and the Andean region. CTA is not aware of any field complaints for this condition, and has not received any reports of property damage or personal injury claims for the affected products.”
