Summary

PACCAReBay Incorporated (PACCAReBay) is recalling certain 2018-2020 T680 and T880 tandem axle vehicles equipped with a parking brake on a single axle and certain models of automated manual transmissions. During cold temperatures, the signal from the park brake pressure switch to the transmission controller may be delayed possibly resulting in the vehicle moving unexpectedly.

 

Remedy

The remedy for this recall is still under development. The recall is expected to begin June 3, 2019. Owners may contact PACCAReBay customer service at 1-918-259-3258. PACCAReBay’s number for this recall is 19KWB.

Introduction In cold weather conditions the signal from the park brake pressure switch to the transmission controller (notifying the transmission to shift to neutral) may be delayed. On vehicles equipped with tandem axles having a single axle equipped with park brakes and certain models of automated manual transmissions, it is possible for the signal delay to result in vehicle movement without warning when the park brake is set, service brakes released and transmission is left in gear.
Situation 1,837 chassis (1,837 U.S. and  0 Canada) T680 and T880 built from 05/03/2017 through 02/27/2019 equipped with tandem axles having a single axle equipped with park brakes and certain models of automated manual transmissions.
Resolution Service all chassis affected that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis.

  1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list.
  2. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review DWWC or SIR for “Complete” next to the “19KWB” campaign code prior to performing this repair.
  3. Follow the procedures below to replace the park brake switch.
It is a violation of Federal law for a dealer to sell or lease new vehicles covered by this recall until the defect or noncompliance has been corrected.
WarrantyThere is no time or mileage limit for this recall. KenwortheBay will pay for parts at dealer net plus applicable mark-up and labor:

  • 3 hours labor to replace the park brake switch. Use Quick Claim Code 19KWB.
  • File an additional claim for extraordinary circumstances. A quick claim for standard labor must be filed first.

Labor
ProcedureThe park brake switch is located behind the gauge pod and HVAC controller.

1. Chock the wheels and turn off the Park Brake to prevent air pressure from being present in the park brake hoseeBay.
2. Remove the B-Panel.

NOTE

The B-panel trim is one continuous part that spans from the instrument cluster to the passenger side glovebox. Start prying the trim piece from the lower left corner of the trim piece to reduce damage to the trim piece.

3. Remove the HVAC control from its dash mount. It does not need to be disconnected.
4. Remove the Gauge pod from its dash mount. It does not need to be disconnected.
5. Locate the switch labeled Park Brake.
6. Disconnect the park brake switch connector.
7. Remove the park brake switch from the air fitting.
8. Install the new switch in reverse order of removal.

Dear KenwortheBay Customer,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

KenwortheBay Truck Company has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain model year 2018-2020 T680 and T880 vehicles manufactured from 05/03/2017 through 02/27/2019, equipped with a single park brake on tandem axles and certain models of automated manual transmissions. In cold weather conditions, the park brake signal to the transmission controller may be delayed. It is possible for the signal delay to result in vehicle movement without warning when the park brake is set, the service brakes are released, and the transmission is left in gear.

The problem is… The park brake pressure switch may send a delayed signal to the transmission controller in cold weather conditions.
What your dealer will do… Dealers will replace the park brake pressure switch.
What you must do … Contact your KenwortheBay Dealer to schedule an appointment for repair.

 

KenwortheBay has initiated a recall to remedy the defect. Please contact your KenwortheBay dealer. To find your KenwortheBay dealer, please visit Dealer Locator at www.Kenworth.com. This repair may take up to 1.0 hour of labor, depending on vehicle configuration and dealer scheduling. This repair will be performed at no charge to you.

If you had this repair performed before you received this letter, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. Receipts for parts and/or labor are required for consideration of reimbursement.
