Summary
This Technical Service Bulletin describes the verification and resolution of water intrusion that may cause the malfunction of the aftertreatment outlet NOx sensor resulting in Fault Code 1887, 3583 or 3545 on certain aftertreatment configurations. A NOx sensor bolt-in water shield may be required to be installed. This is an update to a previously submitted communication.

Configuration: This failure occurs primarily on side outlet aftertreatment Selective Catalytic Reduction (SCR) catalyst systems with vertical exhaust configurations.
Symptom: Fault Code 1887, 3583, or 3545
Resolution
If symptom has been verified, the aftertreatment outlet NOx sensor bolt-in water shield must be installed. See Installation Instructions 4908441, for details on how to install the aftertreatment outlet NOx sensor bolt-in water shield.
To assess if a unit already has an outlet NOx sensor bolt-in water shield installed:
- Inspect for spot welds or two bolts installed in the tailpipe near the outlet NOx sensor. See Figure 1 below.
- Verify the build of the engine serial number (ESN) is August 2015 or later. This can be done using the physical engine dataplate or QuickServe® Online dataplate.
