Check for Aprilia Recalls
Date: August 16, 2019
Dear Valued Customer:
IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
Regarding your: Moto Guzzi (Audace/CaIifornia Touring/EIdorado/MGX-21)
THIS NOTICE APPLIES TO YOUR VEHICLE
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. The NHTSA identification number of this recall is 19V-561
REASON FOR THIS RECALL
Moto Guzzi USA has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in a specific range of Moto Guzzi
motorcycles noted below:
- 2016 and 2018 Audace
- 2017-2018 California Touring
- 2016 and 2018 Eldorado
- 2017 MGX-21
In the affected range, Moto Guzzi USA has identified non-compliant front brake master cylinders that have been installed on a specific, limited batch of vehicles. The front brake master cylinder may not have sufficient ineffective lever stroke (Ineffective stroke = initial part of the lever stroke which does not cause braking effect.) This could lead to a progressive autoactivation of the brake itself until the vehicle stops, with a potential impact on safety. The vehicle may unexpectedly slow down and could stop without activation of the rear stop light, increasing the risk of a crash. According to vehicle registration records, you are the owner of a vehicle that falls within this affected VIN range.
WHAT WE WILL DO
To address this situation, Moto Guzzi USA will conduct a recall of models within the affected VIN range. Moto Guzzi
USA, through the qualified dealer network, will inspect the front brake master cylinder using a specific procedure to determine if a defect exists. Front master cylinders found to be out of compliance will be replaced. This repair campaign will eliminate any potential safety risk.
The work required by this recall may be completed by your qualified Moto Guzzi dealer at no charge to you for the required parts and labor. The work time for the repair is approximately 20 minutes if the master cylinder is found to be compliant and no parts are needed.
If master cylinder replacement is necessary, a claim will be submitted to obtain a new master cylinder and the repair will require approximately 50 minutes of work time.

19-561 Chronology
- All principal events that were the basis for the determination that the defect related to motor vehicle safety.
Details about chronology of principal events are listed here below:
December 2016
Piaggio recorded some claims from the market about residual torque at front wheel during parking with gearbox in neutral. Piaggio
claimed the defect with master cylinder supplier. A possible machining non-conformity of brake lever
only was declared by supplier and resolved. According to supplier master cylinders produced from March 27, 2017 on (marking on component 7327) would be OK.
Piaggio Quality Inspectors checked components and lever machining process, confirming the supplier’s statement about cut-off date.
No further action was made by Piaggio on the field, as customers safety was not involved. Claims continued to be managed through warranty normal procedure.
July 2018
Piaggio recorded from the market some cases of vehicles slowing down while running, due to progressive auto-activation of the front brake.
Following these events, Piaggio began to perform deeper investigations, finding that the main responsible of the defect was the pump body and not the lever, as declared by supplier till the date. In order to solve such functional problem for the ongoing vehicle production Piaggio
activated in July a 100% selection of master cylinders before assembling them on vehicles. No action on the field due to lack of evidence of safety consequences, and claims continued to be managed through warranty normal procedure. The component is designed by the supplier and purchased by Piaggio
as a blackbox, so Piaggio
pushed the supplier for a drawing modification with increased minimum value of ineffective stroke.
June 2019
Piaggio recorded from the market the first two cases of accident due to self-braking event during normal running. Details:
Ref. no. | date | vehicle | Country | Claim – EVENT | Piaggio![]() |
HDS
9000046729 | 18/06/2019 | DORSODURO 750 | Macedonia | Accident with driver’s injury | Piaggio![]() |
HDS
9000046205 | 11/06/2019 | GUZZI MGX-21 | Russia | Accident with driver’s injury | Recall of part was not possible |
Due to above two events, Piaggio activated in July 2019 a safety recall campaign regarding the master cylinder, although at that time the supplier had not yet confirmed the master cylinder problem.
July – September 2019
Piaggio arranged meetings and calls with the supplier in order to clarify the issue and technical responsibility and made available several defective parts available. In September the supplier stated that he had been able to reproduce the problem with internal tests on defective samples, nevertheless has not agreed on responsibility.
