Solar Panel May Detach

If the solar panel detaches from the luggage rack, it can become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

Summary

Thor Motor Coach (TMC) is recalling certain 2020 Sequence 20L motorhomes. The screws securing the solar panel to the luggage rack may fail causing the solar panel to detach.

 

Remedy

TMC will notify owners, and dealers will replace the screws with plates, carriage bolts, washers, and locking nuts, free of charge. The recall began January 3, 2020. Owners may contact TMC customer service at 1-877-855-2867. TMC’s number for this recall is RC000179.

Issue: 

It has been decided that on certain model year 2020 20L Sequence motorhomes, the screws securing the solar panel to the luggage rack may fail allowing the solar panel to become loose, unfastened or detached. If the screws were to fail, the solar panel may become loose, unfasten or detach from the luggage rack.

 

Parts Required:

TMC Recall Kit #0469270 – includes four (4) of each (plate, carriage bolt, locking nut, and washer)

 

Tools Needed:

• Luggage Rack Key
• 3/8” Wrench
• Allen Wrench
• 11mm nut socket
• Screw gun with square head bit/Phillips
• 8 foot step ladder

 

Instructions: 

NOTE:  For this repair, you will be working on one side of the luggage rack and solar panel at a time.  ALL repair steps are to be repeated on the other side of the  luggage rack and solar panel.

 

1. Using Allen wrench remove black cap from track (keep screw in a safe place to reuse).

 

2. With luggage rack key, unlock and remove cover.

 

3. With 3/8” wrench, remove nut and washer holding luggage rack bar to the track. Loosen rack from track. Slide luggage rack bar bolt and plate out (keep hardware in a safe place to reuse).

 

4. From parts kit, insert carriage bolt into  plate hole; repeat for 3 other plates.

 

5. Slide plate and carriage bolt (x2) into track channel. Lift luggage bar to slide both sets of plates and bolts down the track channel. Slide luggage rack bar bolt and plate back in place and secure bar to track with washer and nut.

 

6. Install cover and lock luggage rack.

 

7. Reattach black end cap with original screw.

 

8. Remove the self-tapping screws from the front and rear solar panel leg. Discard. Lift rear solar panel leg and slide one plate and bolt to the front leg of the solar panel. The other plate and bolt are for the rear leg of the solar panel.

 

9. Insert bolt through the rear leg of the solar panel. Install the washer and locking nut. Tighten with an 11mm nut socket.

 

10. Insert bolt through the front leg of the solar panel. Install the washer and locking nut. Tighten with an 11mm nut socket.

 

Repeat steps 1-10 on the other side of the luggage rack and solar panel.

As a result, TMC is conducting a safety recall.  We apologize for any inconvenience this action may cause you; however your safety and continued satisfaction are of the utmost importance to us.

Reason for this recall	It has been decided that on certain model year 2020 20L Sequence motorhomes, the screws securing the solar panel to the luggage rack may fail allowing the solar panel to become loose, unfastened or detached, increasing the risk of a crash.
What we will do	TMC has contacted your selling dealer and has instructed them on how to properly secure the solar panel to the luggage rack. This will be done at no cost to you the owner.  The remedy should take approximately 20 minutes to perform.

Thor Motor Coach (TMC) decided that a non-compliance which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain motor homes.

 

It has been decided that on certain model year 2020 20L Sequence motorhomes, the screws securing the solar panel to the luggage rack may fail allowing the solar panel to become loose, unfastened or detached.

 

The required action is to install the recall kit, which will provide proper securement between the solar panel and luggage rack. This will take approximately 20 minutes to perform.

 

Dealers that have stock units impacted by this recall can access the full list of affected VINs sold to their dealership by accessing the “Service Campaign” portion of the TMC Advantage Web Portal.  If any unit on this list has been retail sold you are asked to notify the retail owner as soon as possible of this recall because their vehicle was not registered at the time the retail notice was mailed.  Please immediately register any retail sold units on this list.  As a reminder, you are required by law to complete this recall on any stock units in inventory prior to retail sale.  Any vehicle lessor receiving this notice must forward a copy to the lessee within 10 days.

Dear Mercedes-Benz Owner,

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Mercedes-Benz AG (“MBAG”), the manufacturer of Mercedes-Benz vehicles, has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Model Year (“MY”) 2018-2019 GLC-Class, E-Class, CLS-Class, AMG GT-Class Four Door, and G-Class vehicles. Our records indicate that your vehicle is included in the affected population of vehicles.

 

What is the Concern?

MBAG has determined that on certain MY 18-19 GLC-Class (253 platform), E-Class (213 platform), CLS-Class (257 platform), AMG GT Four-Door (290 platform) and G-Class (463 platform) vehicles, certain front seat belt buckles might not have been manufactured according to current production specification.  In such case, a correctly latched seat belt could be erroneously detected as not latched.  The occupants would be made aware by both a warning symbol in the instrument cluster as well as by an acoustic signal that warns instantly at the start of the drive. As a result, the electric PRE-SAFE®-function and the pretensioner may not be activated in the event of a crash in which the restraint systems are activated. Thus, the electric PRE-SAFE®-function and the seat belt pretensioners may not deploy during a crash, increasing the risk of injury for the front passengers.

To remedy this issue, as a precautionary measure, an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer, will check the relevant seat belt buckles in the affected vehicles and replace them if necessary.  Unfortunately, the parts to remedy this are currently not yet available.

We are working to obtain the necessary parts to correct this condition as quickly as possible.  As parts become available, we will send you another letter asking you to take your vehicle to an authorized Mercedes-Benz dealer to have the recall completed free of charge.
