Description
Safety Recall -TSE Brake Chamber Air Leak- NHTSA ID: 21V328
What’s New
Safety Recall – TSE Brake Chamber Air Leak- NHTSA ID: 21 V328. Meritor brake chambers were built with a misaligned park spring, which may cause a fatigue hole in the diaphragm and an internal air leak. The affected brake chambers will be replaced.
Introduction
Meritor has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain model 579 and 348 vehicles manufactured from 03/11/2020 through 07/13/2020 with Meritor
rear disc brakes.
Certain TSE brake chambers were built with a misaligned park spring, which may cause a fatigue hole in the diaphragm and an internal air leak. The leak could drain the air system pressure, causing brake drag and setting the parking brakes, increasing the risk of a crash.
Resolution
Service all affected chassis that enter your dealership, even if the customer has no issue with the chassis.
1. Review the attached chassis list for your dealer code and schedule your customer(s) for service if their chassis is on the list.
2. If you are not using Service Management to start repair orders, review SIR for “Complete” or “In Process” next to the “21PBE” campaign code prior to performing this repair.
3. Follow the procedures below to replace the rear brake chambers.
Procedure
Please follow your dealership’s safety procedures and precautions to ensure the vehicle can be safely repaired and maintained.
WARNING!
Prior to the removal of any air system component, always block and hold the vehicle by a secure means other than the vehicle’s own brakes. Depleting air system pressure may cause the vehicle to roll. Keep hands away from chamber push rods and slack adjusters; they will apply as air system pressure drops in the spring brake chambers.
Removal
1. Block wheels.
2. Cage spring brakes.
3. Relieve air system pressure.
4. Identify and remove air lines.
5. Unbolt spring brake chamber from caliper and remove.
Installation
1. Bolt spring brake chamber to caliper and tighten to 100-150 Lb. ft. (136-204 N.m.)
2. Reinstall air lines.
3. Uncage spring brake.
4. Test brake function.
