NHTSA Campaign Number: 21V902
Manufacturer Aluminum Trailer Company (ATC)
Components STRUCTURE
Potential Number of Units Affected 461
Summary
Aluminum Trailer Company (ATC) is recalling certain 2021 Quest and Raven trailers equipped with a spring-assist ramp door assembly. The fastener used to secure the spring-assist ramp door cables may be the incorrect type and over-tightened, which could cause the cable bushings to fail.
Remedy
ATC will supply new materials and work instructions to replace the existing ramp door cable fastener assembly, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 14, 2022. Owners may contact ATC customer service at 1-877-441-2440, ext. 342..

Chronology :
No field failures to date. During regular QC inspection of trailers, it was noted by a QC inspector that the fastener assembly (bushing, fastener and washer) was compressing the plastic assembly and a small crack int he bushing was identified. An investigation was started and research and testing was completed and it was determined on 11/15/21, that in fact, the bushings could potentially break if over torqued or under extreme stress. It was also determined through testing that if one cable bushing fails, it adds additional stress to the other cable bushing which could potentially cause that bushing to fail. If both cable bushings fail with the door open, the cables may potentially violently retract, increasing the risk of injury. Also if both cable fail, the door will have no assistance when opened to close the door. The notification to NHTSA occurred on 11/19/21 in accordance with the reporting rules.

Description of the Cause : NR Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : NR Part 573 Safety Recall Report 21V-902 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR ยง573 Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Spring Assist Cable Assembly Component Description : Ramp Door Cable, 149โL Set Component Part Number : 0018565 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Transglobal Address : 500 North Warpole Upper Sandusky Ohio 46651 Country : United States Chronology : No field failures to date. During regualr QC inspection of trailers, it was noted by a QC inspector that the fastener assembly (bushing, fastener and washer) was compressing the plastic assembly and a small crack int he bushing was identified. An investigation was started and research and testing was completed and it was determined on 11/15/21, that in fact, the bushings could potentially break if over torqued or under extreme stress. It was also determined through testing that if one cable bushing fails, it adds additional stress to the other cable bushing whcih could potentially cause that bushing to fail. If both cable bushings fail with the door open, the cables may potentially violently retract, increaseing the risk of injury. Also if both cable fail, the door will have no assitance when opened to close the door. The notification to NHTSA occurred on 11/19/21 in accordance with the reporting rules. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : ATC will supply new materials and work instructions to replace the existing ramp door cable fastener assembly.
