Summary
Trails West Manufacturing of Idaho, Inc. (Trails West) is recalling certain 2017-2021 Sierra, Classic, Santa Fe, and Freeride trailers equipped with Winntec model 6020 two-stage propane regulators. The regulator may fail, causing an increase in propane pressure.
Remedy
Dealers will replace the regulators, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed January 27, 2022. Owners may contact Trail West customer service at 1-208-852-2200.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Trails West Manufacturing has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2017-2021 Trails West Living Quarters Horse Trailer and FreeRide models equipped with certain Winntec model 6020 two-stage propane regulators. Our records indicate you have purchased a Trails West trailer (Vehicle Identification Number: xxxxxxxxxxxxxxxxx) that is equipped with the above mentioned twostage propane regulator.
REASON FOR THIS RECALL:
Certain Winntec model 6020 two-stage propane regulators installed on Living Quarters horse trailers and FreeRide recreational vehicles may supply elevated, intermittent or low propane pressure to appliances. An increase in propane pressure could cause the flame of an appliance to become larger, and, under certain, rare, circumstances, may ignite adjacent materials resulting in a fire. Appliances that can be affected by an excessive flame include: stovetop, oven, water heater, furnace and refrigerator.
Certain Winntec model 6020 two stage propane regulators contain a second stage valve seal that can fail to regulate propane flow and pressure in two different ways. First, the second stage valve seal in the regulator has an inadequate mechanical lock resulting in seal migration. Once out of position, the valve seal will not properly regulate propane flow and pressure to the appliances. Second, the rubber hoses (pigtails) that connect the onboard propane cylinders to the regulator release a plasticizer which is a liquid that collects in the body of the regulator. When in contact with the plasticizer, the physical properties of the second stage valve seal can change making it easier to degrade during use and easier to migrate out of position.
Irregular performance from the recreational vehicle appliances may be an indicator that the propane regulator is experiencing the safety defect. The smell of propane may be present at the regulator which would indicate the regulator is venting due to high pressure.
RECALL REMEDY:
Units affected by this recall will have the Winntec model 6020 LP regulator removed and replaced with a Cavagna Model 924N regulator. Once the regulator is replaced, the dealer will be required to perform the industry standard LP system validation. Requirements include: leak detection, timed pressure drop test and regulator lock out test. This replacement will be done at no cost to the owner.
IF YOU HAVE ALREADY PAID TO HAVE THIS ISSUE REPAIRED:
You may be eligible to receive a reimbursement for the cost of repairs made prior to receiving this notice. If you have paid to have the above mentioned repairs made, please contact Kirk Buttars at 208-852-2200 to determine if you are eligible for reimbursement and be advised of the process necessary to receive reimbursement.
WHAT YOU NEED TO DO:
Discontinue use of your trailer’s propane system until repairs have been made. This can be done by closing the valves on each propane tank and disconnecting the supply hose from each tank. Contact an authorized Trails West dealer as soon as possible to schedule an appointment to have this remedy completed. Your repair will be completed as replacement regulators become available.
If, after attempting to have your trailer repaired, you believe you have not been able to have your trailer remedied without charge and within a reasonable amount of time, you may submit a complaint to the Administrator, National Highway Traffic Safety Administration, 1200 New Jersey Ave., S.E., Washington D.C., 20590; or call the toll-free Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY: 1-800-424-9153); or go to http://www.safecar.gov. Federal law requires any lessor who receives notification of a determination of a safety related defect or noncompliance pertaining to any leased motor vehicle shall send this notice to the lessee within 10 days.
If you no longer own this trailer, or you have other questions or concerns, please contact Kirk Buttars at Trails West Manufacturing immediately at 208-852-2200.
We apologize for any inconvenience this safety recall may cause, but your safety is our first concern.
Chronology :
To date we have had one report of a failed winntec model 6020 two stage regulator. The failure was on 9/17/2021 this resulted in the refrigerator in a Freeride model catching fire. This trailer has been returned to our facility and has been inspected by representative of both the refrigerator manufacture (Dometic) and the LP gas regulator manufacture ( winntec). It was determined by their inspection that the Winntec LP regulator was over pressuring the appliances installed in the trailer.
