SUBMITTED TO NHTSA: August 19, 2022 Dear Valued Customer: Fabform has decided that a defect relates to your trailer. This notice applies to utility trailers built between August 8, 2018, and March 21st, 2022 for the following models. Models: FLRR-D, FLR-D, and DBX. Fabform Industries, Inc. has been alerted to the rubber gate hinge stop breaking down, causing the rear gate to potentially rotate off its hinges. Under normal operating circumstances, the rubber hinge stop will prevent the hinges from rotating. However, due to weathering and breakdown of the rubber compound along with the bumping of the gate hinge against the rubber stop, there is the chance of the rubber stop breaking down allowing the gate to become disconnected from the trailer. YOU HAVE BEEN IDENTIFIED AS BEING AN OWNER OF ONE OF THESE UTILITY TRAILERS. The rubber gate hinge stop that is located at the back of your trailer under the rear gate is breaking down due to fatigue and material degradation. As a result, this failure is causing the rear gate to rotate off its hinges and become disconnected from the trailer. Customers reported the rubber hinge stop breaking off, causing the gate to fall off the trailer. IF THE GATE BECOMES DISCONNECTED FROM THE TRAILER IT COULD CAUSE PERSONAL INJURY OR EVEN AN ACCIDENT THAT COULD LEAD TO DEATH. WE ARE ASKING THAT YOU REFRAIN FROM USING THIS UTILITY TRAILER UNTIL THE NECESSARY REPAIR IS MADE. We have hired an engineering firm for a fix that can be performed on your trailer. A manufacturer representative will be going to your dealership to perform the necessary fix. There is no charge for this fix. A schedule of when our representative will be closest to your residence on file is enclosed. Please contact us to schedule your appointment, or for any questions you may have. We are enclosing a collection of photos with step-by-step explanation of the proposed resolution to this defect. We have received three customer reports of failures. The first in the summer of 2020 and the most recent May 17th, 2022. Both customers had their gates become disconnected from the trailer while driving down the road. We have repaired each of these trailers. The fix will be performed by a representative of Fabform Industries, Inc. at a dealership nearest you (this may or may not be the dealership where the purchase was made) so we are confident that the fix is done correctly to the engineered guidelines. We will schedule available dates for your fix to be performed, which will be on or after July 26th, 2022. The actual repair should take approximately 5 minutes. It was at this point that we started putting on the rubber stop as a means of preventing the gate hinge from shifting right to left. The end date was determined by the date in which a new steel hinge stop was put into production to replace the old rubber stop. The specific models included in the recall differ from other models not included in that they are our deluxe utility models. These specific models have a heavier duty gate which weighs more and makes it easier for the gate to shift on the hinges between the gate tabs. Production Dates : AUG 08, 2018 – MAR 21, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The rubber compound in the rubber stop that was being used as a hinge stop has become weaker over time to where it has broken down and allowed our deluxe utility gate hinges to shift to where eventually the gate has become disconnected from the trailer. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : If the gate becomes disconnected from the trailer while in transport it could cause a potential accident as a result of the gate falling off of the trailer. Description of the Cause : The rubber stop becoming weak and breaking apart. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : There can be potential cracking of the rubber as it breaks down. Address : 25932 Wright Circle Foothill Ranch California 92610 Country : United States Chronology : In the summer of 2020, Trailer Boss of Spokane contacted us stating he had a customer that had had a gate fall off of his deluxe box trailer . On February 9th, 2022, Trailer Boss of Rochester contacted us stating that a customer gate had fallen off his deluxe box trailer. In March the decision was made to go to a hinge stop that was constructed out of aluminum instead of rubber. Those new stops went into production March 21st, 2022. Then on May 17th, 2022 we had a customer contact us stating that he had a gate fall off of his deluxe box trailer in the process of driving from Nevada City, California to Maine. It was at this point that the decision was made that we needed to issue a product recall. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : The plan is to replace the rubber stop with an aluminum bushing that will become the hinge stop. The manufacturer will have the customers bring the trailers to the nearest dealer where either a dealer representative or Fabform representative will change out the old hinge stop for the new hinge stop free of charge. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The major difference between the old rubber stop vs the new steel hinge stop is the material they are made out of. The new aluminum hinge stop will not have break down like the rubber stop did. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The issue was fixed in production when the new aluminum hinge stop replaced the old rubber hinge stop in production on March 21st, 2022.
