IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL
Dexter Axle has decided that a potential safety defect exists in certain trailers manufactured or distributed by your company. Accordingly, a recall to address this issue is being initiated effective June 23, 2022. The defect involves a 42mm cartridge bearing washer that may crack under load within the hub assembly. The potential may lead to a hub separation condition of the axle wheel end. Affected trailer manufacturers and distributors will be notified by mail regarding this recall and will be instructed to verify the affected units and instructed to replace the suspect washer with a certified washer. The parts will be replaced in accordance with a detailed set of repair instructions. All replacement parts will be provided by Dexter Axle. There is no cost to owners for this recall. Please be reminded that it is a violation of Federal law for you to sell or lease the trailers covered by this notification until this recall has been performed. Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law. Specific purchase order numbers that are affected by the recall are on the second page of this letter. Description of Defect :
Description of the Defect : 42mm cartridge bearing washer may crack on load within the hub assembly.
The potential leads to a hub seperation condition of the axle wheel end.
FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR
Description of the Safety Risk : There is a potential for the washer to crack under load. If the washer cracks, the preload on the bearing is lost resulting in a premature bearing life and excessive end play in the hub assembly. This may lead to a hub separation condition which is a safety risk.
Description of the Cause : Due to improper heat treatment including quench and tempering at the component supplier, the 42mm cartridge bearing washer may be brittle leading to cracking under load when assembled. Identification of Any Warning

After receiving customer complaints/warranty claims on 16-June of a bearing failure, an investigation was initiated to determine the failure mechanism of the issue. Upon further investigation of the claims, it was discoverd the washer associated 42mm cartridge bearing washer was cracking leading to potential bearing and hub assembly performance issues including detachment from the axle. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Dexter instituted a 100% comformance testing of the hardness of the
42mm cartridge bearing washer on 18-Jun-2022. Dexter will contact each customer to coordinate repair/replacement of suspect axle hubs. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : 42mm cartridge bearing washers have been marked with a ‘gold’ paint dot to indicate the material hardness meets the product specifcations.
The corrective/containment actions were put into production on 20- Jun-2022. Recall Schedule :
Description of Recall Schedule : All of our customers have been notified verbally and the recall letter will
be distributed by 15-Jul-2022. There is no current plan for the manufacturer notice for this recall.
