Summary
Forest River
, Inc. (Forest River
) is recalling certain 2022 Coachmen Apex travel trailers. The tail lights may have been incorrectly wired to an “ON/OFF” switch, which can cause the brake or tail lights to not illuminate when the switch is in the “off” position.
Remedy
Dealers will rewire the tail lights, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 9, 2022. Owners may contact Forest River
customer service at 1-574-358-0401. Forest River

Disconnect the vehicles’ battery Positive and Negative, disconnect any House battery(s) Positive and Negative, if equipped with a generator ensure it is off and lastly, ensure the vehicle is disconnected from shore power. Block any tires/wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Failure to do so may result in electrocution, fire or other personal injury, property damage and/or death.
INSPECTION:
STEP 1: LOCATE THE RADIO INSIDE THE VEHICLE, IN THE OVERHEAD CABINET ABOVE THE DINETTE;
– USE SOMETHING TO TETHER THE RADIO TO THE OVERHEAD CABINET OR YOU WILL NEED TO DISCONNECT THE RADIO AND SET ASIDE;
STEP 2: CHECK FOR A BUNDLE OF FIVE (5) WIRES, ONE (1) SOLID GREEN AND FOUR (4) GREEN WITH A WHITE STRIPE. IF THEY ARE ALL CONNECTED WITH A SINGLE BELL CAP, PROCEED TO REMEDY.
STEP 3: IF THE INSPECTION REVEALS ONLY THREE (3) GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPE WIRES CONNECTED TOGETHER, AND SEPERATLY A SINGLE (1) SOLID GREEN WIRE CONNECTED TO A SINGLE (1) GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPE WIRE, THEN THE VEHICLE DOES NOT NEED REMEDIED.
– RE-INSTALL RADIO;
REMEDY:
STEP 1: LOCATE THE RADIO INSIDE THE VEHICLE, IN THE OVERHEAD CABINET ABOVE THE DINETTE;
– USE SOMETHING TO TETHER THE RADIO TO THE OVERHEAD CABINET OR YOU WILL NEED TO DISCONNECT THE RADIO AND SET ASIDE;
STEP 2: WITH THE RADIO OUT OF THE WAY, LOCATE A BUNDLE OF FOUR (4) WIRES
– COLORS ARE: FOUR (4) GREEN WITH A WHITE STRIPE AND A SINGLE (1) SOLID GREEN COLOR WIRE
STEP 3: CUT THE BELL CAP OFF THIS BUNDLE OF WIRES;
STEP 4: PLUG THE VEHICLE IN TO SHORE POWER OR CONNECT BACK TO A FULLY CHARGED BATTERY;
STEP 5: SEPARATE THE WIRES, STRIP THE GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPE AND SOLID GREEN WIRE;
STEP 6: TURN THE BEDROOM LIGHT SWITCH TO THE “ON” POSITION;
STEP 7: HOLD THE SOLID GREEN WIRE BELOW THE STRIPPED PORTION OF THE WIRE;
– ONE BY ONE, TOUCH EACH GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPE WIRE TO THE SOLID GREEN WIRE;
– ONE OF THE GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPE WIRES WILL TURN ON THE BEDROOM LIGHT(S);
STEP 8: ONCE THE GREEN WIRE WITH WHITE STRIPE IS IDENTIFIED (TURNING ON THE BEDROOM LIGHT(S) BY TOUCHING THE SOLID GREEN WIRE:
– TWIST THE STRIPPED PORTION OF THE TWO WIRES TOGETHER;
– CRIMP A NEW BELL CAP ONTO THESE TWO WIRES;
STEP 9: TWIST THE REMAINING THREE (3) GREEN WITH WHITE STRIPE WIRES TOGETHER AND CRIMP A NEW BELL CAP ONTO THEM;
STEP 10: RE-INSTALL THE RADIO INTO THE OPENING;
STEP 11: CHECK RADIO FOR PROPER WORKING FUNCTIONALITY;
STEP 12: DOUBLE CHECK BEDROOM LIGHT(S) FOR PROPER WORKING FUNCTIONALITY;
STEP 13: TURN OFF BEDROOM LIGHT SWITCH;
STEP 14: PLUG IN THE 7-WAY BARGMEN AND TEST FOR PROPER WORKING FUNCTIONALITY OF THE CLEARANCE, TAIL LAMPS, BLINKERS, FOUR-WAY BLINKER, AND FINALLY, THE BRAKE ILLUMINATION;
accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River
has decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2022 Coachmen APEX APTT256BHS travel trailer recreational vehicles. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?
The tail lamps were mistakenly wired to an “ON/OFF” switch in the bathroom.
EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.
If an operator turns the switch “OFF” there will not be any tail lamps, or brake lamps. This condition may lead other motorists to not realize the slowing of the vehicle, which may result in a crash.
WHAT IS FOREST RIVER
AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?
Forest River
is notifying dealerships of the recall. You may have the recall corrected at any Forest River
dealership. Forest River
will provide all parts and labor free of charge to Consumers and Dealers. An authorized Forest River
dealer will need to perform the remedy to correctly wire the tail lamps to work properly away from the bathroom light switch.It is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy. Forest River
completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under the above recall number.
WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?
Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. The vehicle Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River
of having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.
