Reduced clamp load to the tie rod end could allow the tie rod end to separate from the crosstube. Separation is more likely to occur when tie rod loads are highest, which is at slow vehicle speeds over rough terrain or turning maneuvers. FMVSS 1 : NR Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-782 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Separation of the tie rod end from the cross tube could result in partial loss of vehicle steering capability, increasing the risk of a crash. Description of the Cause : Excessive carbon was introduced to the tie rod clamp surface during the heattreating process. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The initial effect would be a vehicle out of alignment. If both clamps on the tie rod cracked, the tube could rotate and result in a partial loss of steering capability. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Tie Rod Clamp Component Description : NR Component Part Number : B05-6029 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Meritor Address : 2135 West Maple Troy Michigan 48084 Country : United States Chronology : 8/31/2022: Safety and Compliance was notified by Meritor of potential tie rod clamp failures. 9/1/2022 through 10/5/2022: Safety & Compliance opens investigation and creates chassis list based on dates provided by Meritor. Manufacturing checks assembly plants for vehicles to be quarantined. 10/7/2022: Safety & Compliance checked warranty system and found no claims or reports related to the issue. 10/10/2022: Peterbilt and Kenworth held joint Safety Committee meeting and determined that a defect relating to motor vehicle safety exists. Authorized dealers will replace both tie rod clamps in affected vehicles free of charge. Owners who incurred costs to obtain a remedy for the problem addressed in the recall in advance of receiving notification may seek reimbursement through the process outlined in the general reimbursement plan on file. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Replacement tie rod clamps will meet Meritor’s specifications for heat treatment.
