Accordingly, a recall (NHTSA ID 22E-080) to address this issue was initiated effective September 21, 2022. This potential defect and the remedy are detailed in the attached Service Bulletin SBO 15 dated September 21, 2022. The affected axles are models of the Smart-Steer 2.0 self-steering axle with the 702887 bolt-on steer ann built from October 13, 2017 to October 3 0, 2022. Dexter Canada has detennined that under certain heavy loading conditions the steer arm attached to the knuckle can potentially shear. If this condition occurs, the upper section of the sheared steer ann will remain attached to the knuckle by the mounting bolts and lower section of the steer ann will remain attached to the tie-rod assembly but potentially drag along the ground. At no time will the vehicle become uncontrollable and the operator will be able to safely operate until they can secure the axle under the vehicle. The repair, which is outlined in the Service Bulletin SB0 15 (attached), must be perfonned at a Dexter Canada authorized facility and will be at no cost to the owner (Dexter Canada will pay the cost of the prescribed repair). Please provide all known owners of your trailers which contain an affected axle with a recall notice with the specific instructions for the repair, as well the locations and contact information for authorized repair facilities. Service work will include the following steps: 1. Remove the existing steer arms and mounting hardware. 2. Clean mounting surface and surrounding surfaces to prepare for mounting of the new bolt-on steer arm and additional welds. 3. Grind a 3/ 16″ chamfer along the mounting face edge (see page three for location & detail). 4. Mount new design steer arms (Part# 703293-LH/RH) with supplied hardware and torque to 400 ft-lbs. 5. Add welds as shown on page three of this bulletin. A reference table of Impacted models Is on page two of this service bulletin.
