A coolant heater that overheats can increase the risk of fire.

Summary
Mack Trucks, Inc. (Mack
) is recalling certain 2019-2023 LRBE battery electric trucks. The cabin heater relay may fail, causing the coolant heater to overheat.
Remedy
Dealers will update the software for the Hybrid Powertrain Control Unit and Instrument Cluster, and install replacement relays, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 16, 2023. Owners may contact Mack
customer service at 1-800-866-1177. Mack

Description
On certain Electric Vehicles, the coolant heater may stay energized when in a no flow or low coolant level condition, which could cause the heater to catch fire.
No such overheating incidents have been reported to us at this time.
Mack will install replacement relays and perform software update.

Dealer Responsibilities
- The National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act and Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Act require dealers to ensure that all new and used vehicles are free of safety defects and comply with all relevant safety standards at the time of delivery to the consumer.
- Dealers should make their personnel aware of the safety recall. In the event that a dealer has a vehicle included in the safety recall in their inventory to be sold, the condition must be corrected before releasing it to a customer.

- Vehicle list will be posted on the Trucks Dealer Portal January 27, 2023.
- Owner notification letters will be released on or before March 19, 2023.
- Repair Instruction will be released once they are available.

EV Vehicle Heater Thermal Escalation LRE
RECALL INFORMATION
Revised (March 31, 2023)
Mack Trucks has determined that certain 2019-2023 model year LRE vehicles, have the risk of an Energy Storage System (ESS), Electric Heater Relays staying energized. On affected vehicles if the ESS Heater Relays stay energized(latched) when in a no flow, or low coolant level condition, this could result in the coolant heater experiencing a thermal escalation posing the risk of property damage and/or personal injury.
Mack Trucks has not received any complaints or reports of vehicle crashes because of this safety issue; therefore, Mack
considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Mack
โs customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mackโs stringent quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to replace the ESS electric heater relays, run an accessory kit that enables relays count monitoring, and program the specific control units.

Repair Instructions
- Secure vehicle for service.
- Follow operation 3119-03-02-11 in Impact for replacement of the ESS Electric Heater Relays.
Important Note! |
The functional parameter reset; calibration is not required for this recall (Steps 70-72 in Impact). The relay count parameter value will automatically be set to zero when programming the accessory kit. |
Software Install
- Connect to the vehicle using PTT.
- Using PTT insure the (IC) instrument cluster has the latest SW installed. If not, program the IC using operation 1700-08-03-39 Under the program tab, to update the programming on both ICs.
Important Note! |
If the IC is not at the correct SW level the accessory kit will not complete and a pop-up message will appear. |
- Run operation 1700-22-03-06 in PTT under the program tab, to install the Accessory kit Part number 85165435
- After the accessory is installed program the DC/DC Control Unit (DCU) using operation 3223-2203-01 in PTT under the program tab.
- Clear any DTC
- Return vehicle to service.
Note: Dealers are to perform Safety Recalls on all subject vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner regardless of mileage, age of vehicle or ownership (original purchaser or subsequent purchasers). Whenever vehicles are subject to a Safety Recall are brought to your dealership for service, or taken into your dealership vehicle inventory, it is strongly recommended that every effort be made to perform the recall correction before the vehicle is sold or released to the owner.
Chronology :
June 24, 2021, Volvo Europe Product Safety Committee (PSC) meets and makes a recall decision relative to their EMOB platform.
August 18, 2021, Volvo North America is informed of the decision.
October 26, 2021 Volvo North America Product Safety Working Group (PSWG) is made aware and opens investigation (21-095) into findings made by Europe PSC and recommends a foreign recall report be filed because the relay in question is used in North American product.
November 17, 2021 Volvo North America Foreign Recall Report 21F252 EV vehicle heater thermal escalation. December 16, 2022, PSWG Investigation findings concluded.
January 5, 2023 Investigation findings reviewed with product engineering and verified. January 13, 2023 PSWG makes recommendation that a safety defect finding be made.
January 18, 2023, North American PSC meets and makes the determination that a product safety defect exists. January 23, 2023 573 Report Filed with NHTSA.
There have been no accidents or injuries or field complaints or warranty claims related to this issue.

On affected vehicles if the ESS Heater Relays stay energized(latched) when in a no flow, or low coolant level condition, this could result in the coolant heater experiencing a thermal escalation posing the risk of property damage and/or personal injury.
Mack Trucks has not received any complaints or reports of vehicle crashes because of this safety issue; therefore, Mack considers this as a proactive measure to protect the public and Mackโs customers from the potential risk associated with this defect.
To ensure that these vehicles meet Mackโs stringent quality requirements, follow the instructions outlined below to replace the ESS electric heater relays, run an accessory kit that enables relays count monitoring, and program the specific control units.

1. Secure vehicle for service.
2. Follow operation 3119-03-02-11 in Impact for replacement of the ESS Electric Heater Relays.
Important Note!
The functional parameter reset; calibration is not required for this recall (Steps 70-72 in Impact). The relay count parameter value will automatically be set to zero when programming the accessory kit.
Software Install
3. Connect to the vehicle using PTT.
4. Using PTT insure the (IC) instrument cluster has the latest SW installed. If not, program the IC using operation 1700-08-03-39 Under the program tab, to update the programming on both ICs.
Important Note!
If the IC is not at the correct SW level the accessory kit will not complete and a pop-up message will appear.
5. Run operation 1700-22-03-06 in PTT under the program tab, to install the Accessory kit Part number 85165435
6. After the accessory is installed program the DC/DC Control Unit (DCU) using operation 3223-22-03-01 in PTT under the program tab.
7. Clear any DTC
8. Return vehicle to service.

DEAR MACK TRUCK OWNER: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
Mack Trucks, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2019 and 2021-2023 Mack LR Electric vehicles manufactured September 17, 2018 through September
19, 2022.
SAFETY DEFECT: On a small number of LR Electric models, a relay for the coolant heater could fail. If this happens, the heater could stay energized when there is no coolant flow or a low coolant level. SAFETY RISK: A coolant heater that stays energized could create the risk of a fire.
PRECAUTIONS YOU CAN TAKE: TIME REQUIRED FOR THE REPAIR:
There are no precautions you can take other than having your vehicle repaired by a Mack Parts and Service Center. The time required to inspect and/or repair your vehicle is approximately 1 hour.
WHAT YOU SHOULD DO:
You should contact the nearest Mack Parts and Service Center and make an appointment. Mack dealer will update the hybrid powertrain control unit and instrument cluster software. The dealer will also install replacement relays. All repairs will be performed free of charge.

No such overheating incidents have been reported to us at this time.

Description of Remedy Program : Update software for Hybrid Powertrain Control Unit (HPCU) and
Instrument Cluster (IC). Install replacement relays. Reimbursement for the recall will be covered by Manufacturer’s Reimbursement Plan on file with NHTSA. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : Software installs counter for relay actuations and when a proscribed number of actuations is attained then will flag the vehicle for maintenance, if the actuation numbers are exceeded then the heater itself is disabled.
