Summary
Weldon Division of Akron Brass (Akron Brass) is recalling certain Hercules HC 1.7 Node multiplex nodes, part number 6060-2010-00. In the event of a short circuit or wiring failure, the firmware in the node may fail to shut off the output pin, resulting in overloaded electrical circuits.
Remedy
Weldon will update the firmware, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed February 08, 2024. Owners may contact Akron Brass customer service at 1-800-228-1161. Akron Brass number for this recall is TBS-24-002. This recall involves the same issue as stated in previous safety recall 23E-084. Vehicle owners may have vehicles that are affected by one or both recalls.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Weldon, a division of Akron Brass Company, has decided a safety related defect exists in firmware used on certain V‐MUX Hercules HC1.7 I/O Nodes, Weldon Part Number 6060‐2010‐00 produced between October 30, 2023 and December 15, 2023. Only version 1.00 is affected. Versions 1.01 and newer are not subject to this recall. This recall involves the same issue as stated in previous safety recall 23E‐084. Vehicle owners may have vehicles that are affected by one or both recalls.
In the affected products, short circuit protection may not function properly. In the case of a short circuit in the wiring or the connected load, overheating of the wiring or the load may occur. Depending on how the product is installed in the vehicle, this could increase the risk of a vehicle fire.
You are receiving this notice because Weldon records indicate you have received shipments of affected units. Please see attached list of shipments and dates and your order numbers that need to receive a firmware update.
Devices at your facility not yet installed on vehicles (w/o design files) can be remedied by updating the firmware to the latest version available on Akron website (in the same location as the other OS) https://smhttp‐ssl61500.nexcesscdn.net/media/pdf/AllOSFiles20240201.zip or download OS from Akron as you typically would.
Completed vehicles that remain at your facility may have all the affected Hercules HC 1.7 nodes installed updated at the same time and without accessing the individual nodes or design files. To do this, use the Weldon update utility app and the downloader kit. This update is estimated to take 5‐10 minutes.

Weldon will provide owner notification letters to vehicle owners and will provide a free remedy to units installed on vehicles. Typically this will be through the Weldon service network as the owner makes arrangements. Please provide Weldon with the applicable vehicle owner contact information.

Chronology :
November 2023 – Weldon filed a recall report (23E-084) for a similar type of device (multiplex node) after identifying an issue with the electrical current sensing calibration. Subsequently, Weldon reviewed the performance of a product with a similar function, the Hercules HC node.
December 2023 – The results of Weldon’s initial testing indicated the Node fused internally and performed in a safe manner.
January 2024 – Additional testing of production samples indicated that a short circuit in vehicle wiring could cause overheating of the node.
On January 24, 2024, Weldon decided to conduct a recall and issue a firmware update to remedy the issue.

On January 24, 2024, Weldon decided to conduct a recall and issue a firmware update to remedy the issue. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : Update the installed firmware in the node using an updater application
that can be downloaded from the company website.
The same updater used in Akron TSB 23-001 NHTSA 23E084 is used to update the firmware in the affected devices.
Service provider will be compensated so there is no cost to vehicle owner for this firmware update.
Nothing needs to be removed from the truck, this is a firmware update accomplished by plugging into the truck to upload the latest firmware. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : Firmware number on the device determines the range of devices that shall be recalled. Version 1.00 to be recalled. This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor
Vehicle Safety Act. Weldon, a division of Akron Brass Company, has decided that
a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain V‐MUX Hercules
HC I/O Nodes, Weldon Part Number 6060‐2010‐00.
In the affected products, short circuit protection may not function properly. In
the case of a short circuit failure in the vehicle wiring or the connected device, overheating of the wiring or the
connected device may occur, and depending on how the product is installed in the vehicle, this could increase the risk
of a vehicle fire. This is the same issue identified on Weldon 8 x 16 nodes that are covered under previous recall 23E‐
084. While you may have a vehicle covered by both recalls, the same software update fixes all the nodes on the vehicle.
You are receiving this notice because your vehicle manufacturer records indicate you have received a vehicle that
contains an affected unit or units. Vehicles equipped with these devices need a firmware or software update. You
may also receive a notice from the vehicle manufacturer.
All the affected nodes installed in your vehicle can be updated with one connection to the V‐MUX network, without
accessing the individual nodes. The design files and functionality are not affected. A Weldon service app and the
downloader kit is utilized to make the firmware update, free of charge. This update is estimated to take an average of
5‐10 minutes and can be completed when the vehicle is in PM without other changes.
Weldon will provide the update application to authorized service providers to install the firmware update along with
instructions.

agency name and mailing address to obtain the remedy at no cost to you.
