April 3, 2024 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 24V250000
Tire Damage from Cracked Wheel Flange
Damaged tires can cause a loss of vehicle control and increase the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 24V250
Manufacturer Daimler Trucks North America, LLC
Components WHEELS
Potential Number of Units Affected 29,092
Summary
Daimler Trucks North America, LLC (DTNA) is recalling certain 2023-2024 Freightliner
108SD, 114SD, Business Class M2, Cascadia, 2024 Western Star
57X, and 2023 Freightliner
122SD vehicles. The steer axle wheel flanges may crack and cause damage to the tires.
Remedy
The remedy is currently under development. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed June 2, 2024. Owners may contact DTNA customer service at 1-800-547-0712. DTNA’s number for this recall is FL999.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
FL999 Alcoa Steer Wheel Inner Flange Failures
573 Chronology (Amended April 10, 2024):
In July 2023, DTNA received a field report which described that several trucks had experienced flange cracking or breaking. Over the course of July and August 2023, additional field reports and warranty claims were received which all involved similar allegations. These initial reports were investigated and eventually closed without action in October 2023 based on information that indicated the condition was detectable to drivers, no reports of any sudden air loss from tires or any other safety-relevant outcomes. Additionally, corrective action had been taken by the supplier which corrected its machining parameters to meet specification.
DTNA continued to monitor the issue and did not receive any additional reports potentially related to the same concern until a single report was received from a fleet customer in February 2024 which reported the presence of a cracked flange around the wheel and a failed tire, but it was unclear whether the cracked flange preceded or contributed to the tire failure or not. Over the course of these investigations, DTNA received a total of 23 warranty claims (documented between June 20, 2023 through March 14, 2024). DTNA has also received additional field reports related to the same issue including a second report of a rapid air loss event for a total of 15 field reports (documented between July 10, 2023 to March 22, 2024). On March 19, 2024 DTNA reopened the investigation while working closely with the wheel supplier. While the root cause investigation of these reports remains ongoing, out of an abundance of caution, on March 28, 2024, DTNA decided to initiate a recall to address this issue. Based on the variance in the field experience between trucks produced at DTNA’s Mexico facility which use wheels produced at the supplier’s Mexico facility as compared to trucks with wheels produced at other facilities, DTNA’s best understanding at present is that the defect is limited to trucks produced at the Mexico facility. DTNA continues to monitor the performance of wheels produced by the same supplier at other facilities.
Upon further review, in total, DTNA has received 15 field reports, and has observed 23 warranty claims. DTNA is not aware of any customer complaints or VOQs related to this concern. There are no crashes nor death or injuries known.
On April 10, 2024, in response to a request in the Recall Acknowledgment Letter for this matter, DTNA amended its chronology to provide an updated summary of field activity with associated date ranges and counts related to this issue and amended supplier address as per supplier’s request.

Subject: Stop Delivery Order: Safety Recall FL999
SAFETY RECALL NOTICE On 04/03/2024, Daimler Truck North America (“DTNA”) filed a Defect Information Report (“DIR”) with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (“NHTSA”) and/or a Defect Information Notice (“DIN”) with Transport Canada (“TC”) informing the agencies of our intent to conduct a voluntary safety recall.
It is a violation of federal law for a dealer or distributor to deliver a new motor vehicle or any new or used item of motor vehicle equipment (including a tire) covered by this notification under a sale or lease until the defect or noncompliance is remedied. Some of the vehicles subject to this “Stop Delivery Order” may be in your new vehicle inventory. Until further instructions are available, new vehicles subject to this “Stop Delivery Order” must be held and not delivered to customers.
DTNA strongly recommends that dealers and distributors remedy all recall before selling used vehicles. For any used vehicle with an open recall not remedied before sale, DTNA requires that the dealer or distributor notify prospective buyers of the open recall.
Affected VINs are visible in DTNA’s warranty system (OWL) via coverage information or by running the CM012 dealer report. Please ensure that registration information on vehicles subject to this recall is up to date to facilitate accurate owner notification.
