Defect/ Noncompliance Description
For this Defect/Noncompliance:
Describe the defect or noncompliance: Cummins states per NHTSA 19£-070, “The VCU may activate
the anti-roll back feature during slow moving stop-and-go conditions. If this occurs, the vehicle may
experience a brief unexpected motion. 11
Describe the safety risk: Cummins states per NHTSA 19£-070, “If the vehicle experiences brief
unexpected motion, there may be an increased risk of a vehicle crash or injury to passengers or
pedestrians.”
If applicable, identify the manufacture of the defective or noncompliant component.

Chronology of Defect/ Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the
noncompliance decision.: October 24 2019, DTNA was notified of an equipment recall (19E-070} by its
supplier, Cummins Inc. DTNA opened an investigation to determine the scope of the issue. Cummins has
provided a list of DTNA vehicles that are affected, and DTNA found five vehicles operating in the field
with the suspect VCU. DTNA has not received any reports related to unintended vehicle motion in DTNA
vehicles. November 5, 2019, DTNA decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall of the affected vehicles.
Identify the Remedy
Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for
reimbursement.: Cummins Inc. is currently working on the VCU software update for the remedy. DTNA
will work with Cummins for the repair procedure in the field. Copies of the reimbursement plan will be
submitted as a supplemental report when available.
Identify the Recall Schedule
Describe the recall schedule for notifications.: Customer notification will be made by first class mail
using Daimler Trucks North America records to determine the customers affected.
