Defect/ Noncompliance Description
For this Defect/Noncompliance:
Describe the defect or noncompliance:
On the affected vehicles the vehicle certification label contains the incorrect information and thus fails to
comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard No. 120, “Tire Selection and
Rims f or Motor Vehicles Other Than Passenger Cars.” The Gross Axle weight rating (GAWR), states 8000
Kgs, 18000 lbs, however the steer tires are only rated for 17,640/bs. The error was due to miscalculation
in the conversion from Kgs to lbs.
If a noncompliance, provide the applicable FMVSS:
FMVSS 120
Describe the safety risk:
Incorrect weight rating information on the certification labels could result in potential overloading of the
axles and increase the likelihood of a crash.
Chronology of Defect/ Noncompliance Determination
Provide the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the
noncompliance decision.:
Late September 2019, during development of the service literature, it was identified that the GA WR label
may be incorrect. October 2019, DTNA opens an investigation to identify potential field exposure.
November 2019, DTNA identified that there were vehicles in the field requiring repairs with new labels
and tires. November 12, 2019 DTNA determined that the labels did not comply with the certification
requirements set forth in FMVSS 120, therefore decided to conduct a voluntary compliance recall.
Identify the Remedy
Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for
reimbursement.
Field service indicated that all vehicles in the population have been repaired. DTNA will ensure that
repairs were performed with no cost to customer.
Identify the Recall Schedule
Describe the recall schedule for notifications.:
All the vehicles in the population have been repaired. DTNA will not be notifying customers.
