Quickshifter Interference with Linkage Clamp

Summary

Triumph Motorcycles America, LTD (Triumph) is recalling certain accessory Quickshifter Kits, part number A9934069, sold for aftermarket installation on Speed Triple S motorcycles. The Quickshifter assembly body may contact the gear change linkage clamp assembly and interfere with gear changes, possibly resulting in a missed gear/false neutral.

 

Remedy

Triumph will notify owners, and dealers will replace the linkage clamp assembly, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019. Owners may contact Triumph customer service at 1-888-284-6288. Triumph’s number for this recall is SRAN568 (Acc).

Background Information

Dealers are required to repair all motorcycles within the above VIN ranges previously fitted with Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA (A9930469) by replacing the Linkage Clamp Assembly (T2085085) with remedy part (T2085100). Dealers are also required to return to Triumph any unsold Accessory Quickshifter Kits, TSA (A9930469) via the MRN process.

Internal investigations have identified a need to replace the gear linkage clamp assembly (T2085085) on some of the above models that are fitted with an Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA, Triumph Part Number (A9930469).

Initially, dealers are to check if the motorcycle has an Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA fitted. If no Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA is fitted, no repair is required.

If an Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA is fitted, dealers must check for a scallop on the gear linkage clamp assembly as illustrated below.

The gear linkage clamp assembly does not need to be removed for this check as the scallop is clearly visible.

If a scallop exists on the gear linkage clamp assembly, no further action is necessary.

If no scallop exists, dealers are required to replace the gear linkage clamp assembly as described in the procedure below.

 

Unsold Dealer Stock Accessory Kit A9930469 Returns

For all unsold accessory kits in dealer stock (Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA, Triumph Part Number A9930469), dealers are required to return these to Triumph for a full credit via the MRN process. Dealers can order the replacement accessory kits (Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA, Triumph Part Number A9770425).

STOP DELIVERY OF AFFECTED MOTORCYCLES IMMEDIATELY. DO NOT deliver a motorcycle affected by this Safety Recall Action Notice to a customer until you have completed, or confirmed completion of, the procedures described in this Safety Recall Action Notice. Delivering a motorcycle subject to an outstanding Safety Recall Action Notice may contravene local or national laws in your market, territory or country.

 

Triumph subsidiaries and distributors must instigate a Safety Recall Action in their country in accordance with the national recall code of practice. For vehicles in dealer stock, the safety recall MUST be actioned before delivery to the customer.

Dealers are to prioritise repair of customer owned motorcycles before any unsold motorcycles.

Warranty Claim Instructions

Dealers must submit a warranty claim using repair code 995681 for those VINs within the affected VIN range, checked and found NOT to have an Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA fitted.

Parts Ordering Instructions

For Triumph Subsidiary and Overseas Distributor dealers using Triumph Warranty On-Line with Parts Auto Ordering Flag switched on: Order all repair parts by submitting a New Prior through the Warranty OnLine system. Entering the above repair code in a New Prior will automatically add the parts required and labour times for this Safety Recall Action Notice.

For Overseas Distributor dealers NOT using Triumph Warranty On-Line or for Overseas Distributor dealers using Triumph Warranty On-Line with Parts Auto Ordering Flag switched off: Orders should be placed using the normal parts ordering procedure.

 

Genuine Parts Return

Dealer to retain parts for 90 days. All parts must be stored in a secure, non-public accessed area and correctly identified with a completed warranty label. Thereafter the parts must be rendered unusable prior to scrapping.

 

Gear Linkage Clamp Assembly – Removal

Warning

Make sure the motorcycle is stabilised and adequately supported. A correctly supported motorcycle will help prevent it from falling. An unstable motorcycle may fall, causing injury to the operator or damage to the motorcycle.

 

1. Remove the wire clip retaining the TSA shift force sensor front ball joint. Retain the wire clip for reuse.

2. Release the TSA shift force sensor from the gear linkage clamp assembly and allow the TSA shift force sensor to move rearwards and rest inside the frame.
3. Remove and retain the gear linkage clamp assembly fixing. Remove the gear linkage clamp assembly (T2085085).

Gear Linkage Clamp Assembly – Installation

1. Make sure the alignment mark on the gear shaft assembly aligns with the alignment mark on the gear linkage clamp assembly (T2085100) and install the clamp to the shaft.

2. Install the clamp fixing and tighten to 8 Nm.
3. Make sure the ball joint is clean and free from debris and attach the TSA shift force sensor front ball joint to the gear linkage clamp assembly.

4. Refit the wire clip to retain the front ball joint. Make sure the wire clip locates correctly in the ball joint before rotating the clip to lock in place.

Other Instructions

Once completed, please mark the Service Record Book that the requirements of this Safety Recall Action Notice have been complied with.

Before returning the motorcycle to the customer, download the latest calibration to the engine electronic control module, chassis electronic control module (if fitted), keyless electronic control module (if fitted) and instruments (if applicable) using the current version of the Triumph diagnostic software.

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Triumph Motorcycles Ltd. has decided that a defect which relates to the motor vehicle safety exists in 2019 – Speed Triple S models fitted with an optional Accessory Quickshifter Assembly, TSA. Accordingly, Triumph Motorcycles America Ltd. is conducting a safety recall to address the condition.

Our records indicate that you own a 2019 – Triumph Speed Triple S motorcycle, with the VIN shown above. We are notifying you of this recall, in the event that you may own an Accessory Quickshifter Assembly, TSA. If you’ve purchased or if your motorcycle is fitted with the Quickshifter Assembly (part number below), then please review this notice carefully for further instructions.

The reason for this recall notice:	The Quickshifter Assembly, TSA body may contact the gear change Clamp Linkage Assembly, potentially impeding a smooth “assisted” gear change, resulting in a missed gear or false neutral. If this condition occurs, it may lead to a loss of power and acceleration. A sudden loss of acceleration without warning may increase the risk of a crash.
What Triumph & your dealer will do:	Triumph Motorcycles America Ltd. has authorized your dealer to replace the Clamp Linkage Assembly, free of charge (parts and labour) to you. The new Clamp Linkage Assembly will provide a wider clearance from the Quickshifter Assembly, TSA. This repair should take less than 30 minutes. However, depending upon the dealer’s work schedule, it may be necessary to make your motorcycle available for a longer period of time.
What you must do to ensure your safety:	Please make an appointment with your authorized Triumph motorcycles dealer to have this important remedy performed on your motorcycle as soon as possible. Federal regulations require that any vehicle lessor receiving this recall notice must forward a copy of this notice to the lessee within 10 days.
If you need help:	Please contact your authorized Triumph dealer should you have any questions or encounter any difficulty regarding this recall. Triumph Motorcycles has initiated a voluntary safety recall affecting the below-referenced Speed

What is the Problem?

The Quickshifter Assembly, TSA body may come into contact with the gear change Clamp Linkage Assembly, potentially impeding a smooth “assisted” gear change resulting in a missed gear or false neutral. If this condition occurs, it may lead to a loss of acceleration. A loss of acceleration without warning may lead to an increased risk of a crash.

Some clarity on the function of the TSA may be called for. TSA is not like a steering wheel mounted paddle-shift mechanism found in cars. That is to say TSA does not change gear automatically for the rider. TSA enables a foot operated gear change to be made either up or down the gearbox without the need to manually disengage the clutch.  However, the rider has still to apply normal foot pressure to the gear lever in order to make a clean gear change. If normal pressure is not applied to the gear lever the likelihood of a missed gear and the resultant false neutral increases in exactly the same way as would be expected on a non-TSA gearbox.

 

What Will Triumph Do?

To address this condition, Triumph is launching a new recall as described in Safety Recall Action Notice 568.

Notification letters to current customers will be mailed commencing December 2, 2019, explaining the action and advising them to return their bike to a Triumph dealer to have the modification carried out free of charge to the owner.

 

What Should You Do?

All affected motorcycles are to be repaired in accordance with Safety Recall Action Notice 568.

Dealers who have previously sold the affected machine must contact every owner and verify whether their motorcycle is equipped with the Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA (A9930469). Upon confirmation of a fitted Accessory Quickshifter Kit, TSA, dealers will arrange for the necessary repairs to be carried out as soon as possible.

 

Triumph Dealers should take the following actions:

1. You must quarantine all unsold stock (including stock for sale on your website and with third parties) and arrange modification as per Safety Recall Action Notice 568 prior to any further deliveries to customers. You can check those machines in your unsold stock that require modification by using TriumphOnline (TOL). Do this by undertaking the following simple steps:
2. 1. Once signed into the site, select Motor Cycle Sales and then Stock Management (this will provide you a display summary of your unsold machines by model).
   2. Select the affected model to view the individual VIN details of your unsold machines. We strongly recommend you check this listing against your physical stock and advise us of any discrepancies. Machines containing a symbol of a ‘spanner’ (indicating Bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice outstanding) will require attention. Select the VIN to open a dialogue window. Details of all outstanding bulletin(s) and Safety Recall Action Notices are contained in the bottom half of the screen. To view the bulletin content, click on the Union Jack “flag” to open an English language PDF document or alternative flags for other language options (when available). This can be read and/or printed off as required.
3. Owners of machines outside of the affected VIN range are not connected with this action and may therefore require reassurance.
4. Some VINs affected by this Safety Recall Action Notice may also require other bulletin or Safety Recall Action Notice work to be carried out.Please use the above-described system tools to identify all outstanding bulletins or notices and make arrangements to carry out these repairs at the same time.
5. Read, download and circulate the above-mentioned Safety Recall Action Notice to relevant staff and ensure all Sales and Service staff are aware of this action.
6. This action is likely to increase visitor traffic to your showroom and service areas. Please ensure all arrangements are made to best accommodate them.
7. Any unsold Quickshifter Accessory Kits in stock under part number A9930469 must be quarantined and returned under MRN to Triumph. A replacement kit can be ordered under Triumph part number A9770425.

 

U.S. law prohibits the delivery of a recalled motorcycle under a sale or lease until the remedy has been performed.
