This bulletin provides a procedure for jump starting batteries that have been over discharged on your New Flyer Vehicle.
This bulletin supersedes all prior information on this subject already provided in your New Flyer Service Manuals. Make this Service Bulletin available to service personnel to inform them of changed information.
1. Jump Charging / Starting
The following procedure only applies to the system batteries that use a 24 volt start system.
DO NOT attempt to jump charge roof-mounted batteries used on Hybrid vehicles as batteries are high voltage and could result in serious injury.
☞NOTE:
If voltage across batteries measures less than 21.0 volts, recharge batteries with conventional battery charger.
1.1. Description
Jump charge the batteries before jump starting the vehicle. This allows the batteries to recover from an over discharged state to approximately a 20% state of charge. Use a jump start unit or a vehicle specifically equipped with a jump charge/ jump start system.
- Gain access to the jump start connector orthe batteries to be charged.
- Connect jump start cables from chargingunit to jump start connector.
☞NOTE:
If the vehicle does not have a jump start connector, connect jumper cables from the charging unit to the batteries. ALWAYS connect the positive cable first.
- Run the jump charge unit for 5 to 10 minutes.
- When battery is at an approximate chargeof 20% jump start the vehicle.
- Run the vehicle engine on high idle for 5 minutes.
- Disconnect the jump charge/start unit.
