Bluetooth Brake Control Functionality

If a driver of a vehicle equipped with certain 7-way trailer connectors is not aware that trailer braking via foot pedal is unavailable while the 4-Way Hazard Warning Signals are in use, a delay in applying the manual hand-held brake may increase the risk of a crash.

Summary

Horizon Global (Horizon) is recalling certain Tekonsha Prodigy RF Electronic Brake Control with Bluetooth kits, part number 902501, and certain Hand Held units, Part No. 90253, that were sold separately as replacements to be used with the 902501 sold for use on for 1 to 3 axle trailers. The brake control kit and its informational materials do not adequately instruct the operator that trailer brake functionality via foot pedal is unavailable when used in conjunction with certain 7-Way Trailer Connectors, while the tow vehicle’s 4-Way Hazard Warning Signals are activated. The manual hand-held override trailer braking continues to function as intended.

 

Remedy

Horizon will notify owners and dealers, and will provide a replacement part that provides notice/indicators to the driver when foot pedal braking is unavailable, along with updated instructions, free of charge. This recall began June 17, 2020. Owners may contact Horizon customer service at 1-877-973-7871.

Dear Tekonsha Prodigy® Trailer Brake Control Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.  Horizon Global Americas Inc. (Horizon) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in the Prodigy® RF with Bluetooth Electronic Brake Control Kit, Part No. 902501, intended for aftermarket installation on a wide range of trailers / tow vehicles, along with replacement Prodigy Hand Held units sold separately as Part No. 90253.  Horizon is conducting a voluntary safety recall to address the issue.  We are notifying you because distribution records indicate that you have purchased one of these products.

 

What Product Is Involved?

This recall involves the Tekonsha Prodigy® RF with Bluetooth Electronic Brake Control, Part No. 902501, and Prodigy Hand Held, Part No. 90253. These products were shipped to various aftermarket retailers and installers after December 20, 2019.  The products can be identified as follows:

902501 Kit (includes Trailer Mount and Hand Held)

Trailer Mount (look for statement: “For replacement handheld use Part # 90253”)

Hand Held (PN: 90253)

 

What is the Problem?

Horizon Global has identified a risk in lack of driver awareness that trailer brake function via foot pedal is unavailable when used in conjunction with certain 7-Way Trailer Connectors, while the tow vehicle’s 4-Way Hazard Warning Signals are in use.  The manual hand-held “override” trailer braking will continue to function as intended.  If a driver is not aware that trailer braking via foot pedal is unavailable while the 4-Way Hazard Warning Signals are in use, a delay in applying the manual hand-held brake may reduce the driver’s ability to safely operate and maintain control of the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

 

What should you do?

Please return your kit (including trailer mount and hand held) or separately purchased Hand Held, Part No. 90253, to the place of purchase or any Horizon Global dealer to receive a free replacement. The new kit, Part No. 902502, or separately purchased Hand Held, Part No. 90255, will provide updated functionality that gives a visual indication when foot pedal braking is unavailable and updated instructions. Replacement products should be available at retail locations starting the week of July 6, 2020. We are writing to inform you that Horizon Global is conducting a voluntary safety recall of the Prodigy® RF with Bluetooth Electronic Brake Control Kit, Part No. 902501, intended for aftermarket installation on a wide range of trailers / tow vehicles, along with replacement Prodigy Hand Held units sold separately as Part No. 90253.  This recall involves only Part No. 902501 (kit) and Part No. 90253 (Hand Held) on any trailer / vehicle application.

 

What is the Problem?

Horizon Global has identified a risk in lack of driver awareness that trailer brake function via foot pedal is unavailable when used in conjunction with certain 7-Way Trailer Connectors, when the tow vehicle’s 4-Way Hazard Warning Signals are in use.  The manual hand-held “override” trailer braking will function as intended.  If a driver is not aware that trailer braking via foot pedal is unavailable while the 4-Way Hazard Warning Signals are in use, a delay in applying the manual hand-held brake may reduce the driver’s ability to safely operate and maintain control of the tow vehicle, increasing the risk of a vehicle crash.

 

What should you do?

• Product Remaining in Your Inventory: If any Prodigy® RF with Bluetooth Electronic Brake Control kits, Part No. 902501, or separately sold Hand Held, Part No. 90253, remain in your inventory, you should return them to Horizon Global per the Horizon return/refund policy. The return to sale of this product is estimated to start the week of July 6, 2020 after a permanent correction to software providing an in-cabin warning, as validated through updated testing requirements. The new kit will be assigned Part No. 902502; the new Hand Held will be assigned Part No. 90255.
• Products You Sold to Other Resellers: If you sold the recalled products to reselling customers (such as installers and retailers), you must forward a copy of this letter and the attached NHTSA-approved consumer letter to them within five (5) business days of receipt. They should (i) contact Horizon at 1-877-973-7871 or [email protected] to arrange for the return of any remaining inventory and (ii) send a copy of the enclosed consumer letter to any consumer purchasers.  
• Products You Installed or Sold to Consumers: You must immediately check your sale records to identify any consumer purchasers of the recalled product and send those purchasers a copy of the enclosed NHTSA-approved owner letter. The letter advises consumers of the issue and provides return/replacement instructions.
