Upon inspection, it was found that the steering shaft was not fully slid onto the splines of the steering gear. 11/3/2021 Plant inspections found 3 vehicles where the steering shaft was not properly installed. The investigation isolated the issue to the steering system on the 49X vehicles. Out of an abundance of caution, DTNA promptly released a recall. Identify the Remedy Describe the defect/noncompliance remedy program, including the manufacture’s plan for reimbursement. Steering Shaft Assembly Inspection 1. Park the vehicle on a level surface with the front tires pointed straight ahead. Shut down the engine, set the parking brake, and chock the tires. 2. Open the hood. 3. With the truck running, turn the wheel so the pinch bolt is accessible at the top of the steering shaft. 4. Inspect the I-shaft to ensure it is seated all the way down to the steering gear. Fig. 1. For correct installation, see For incorrect installation, see Fig. 2. If installed properly, no further action is required. Proceed to the step 5. NOTICE NOTICE: Do not remove the steering shaft from the steering gear, it is only necessary to slide it the rest of the way on the steering gear until seated completely. Removal of the I-shaft could result in the steering wheel being rotated and damaging the clock spring. Once seated and the new pinch bolt is installed, torque the nut on the pinch bolt until required torque is achieved. 1. Remove and discard the pinch bolt and nut on the gearside of the I-shaft. 2. Slide the steering shaft down so it is flush with the steering gear. 3. Install the new pinch bolt and nut. 4. Tighten the pinch bolt 30 to 35 lbf·ft (41 to 47 N·m). 5. Use blue torque seal after the required torque has been set. 6. Clean a spot on the base label (Form WAR259), write the recall number, FL905, on a blank red completion sticker (Form WAR260), and attach it to the base label, indicating this work has been completed. Visual Inspection Work Instructions Subject: Western Star 49X Steering Pinch Bolt Models Affected: Specific Model Year 2021 & 2022 Western Star 49X model vehicles manufactured June 17, 2020, through October 7, 2021, at the Cleveland Truck Manufacturing Plant. IMPORTANT: It is expected that less than 1% of vehicles will require replacement of the steering pinch bolt. Inspect Steering Shaft and Pinch Bolt 1.Park the vehicle on a level surface, shut down the engine, apply the parking brakes, and chock the tires. 2.Open the hood, and locate the yoked steering shaft connection near the steering gear inside the frame rail. SeeMOD 537. 3.Inspect the connection of the pinch bolt at the splined end of the steering shaft on the steering gear as shown inFig. 1 & 2. A nominal dimension for a correct pinch bolt installation on the shaft will be 19.2mm from thecenterline of the bolt to the gear housing as shown in fig 3, there is a notched area on the spline for the pinchbolt installation. Figure 1 & 2 for the Pinch Bolt locations Fig. 3 for pinch bolt installation dimension Fig. 4 for pinch bolt installation If pinch bolt is correctly installed, NO further actions are required at this time. Please contact your DSM to have a Policy Claim filed to document the inspection. IMPORTANT : On s’attend à ce que moins de 1 % des véhicules nécessitent le remplacement du boulon de pincement de direction. Inspecter l’arbre de direction et le boulon de pincement 1.Stationnez le véhicule sur une surface plane, coupez le moteur, serrez les freins de stationnement etcalez les pneus. 2.Ouvrez le capot et localisez la connexion de l’arbre de direction à chape près du boîtier de direction àl’intérieur du longeron de cadre. Voir MOD 537. 3.Inspectez la connexion du boulon de pincement à l’extrémité cannelée de l’arbre de direction sur leboîtier de direction, comme indiqué sur les Fig. 1 et 2. Une dimension nominale pour une installation correcte du boulon de pincement sur l’arbre sera de 19,2 mm de l’axe de le boulon au carter d’engrenage comme indiqué sur la figure 3, il y a une zone encochée sur la cannelure pour l’installation du boulon de pincement. Figure 1 et 2 pour les emplacements des boulons de pincement Fig. 3 pour la dimension d’installation du boulon de pincement Fig. 4 for pinch bolt installation Si le boulon de pincement est correctement installé, AUCUNE autre action n’est requise à ce stade. Veuillez contacter votre DSM pour qu’une réclamation de police soit déposée afin de documenter l’inspection. Si le boulon de pincement n’est pas installé correctement sur la cannelure, contactez DTNA CAC (1-855-253-0422) pour obtenir des instructions supplémentaires sur la réparation du véhicule pour le remettre en service. The Dealer Network is informed that a RECALL NOTIFICATION will be sent to NHTSA and TRANSPORT CANADA notifying them of an approved DTNA vehicle Recall Campaign: FL905: Western Star Forward Axle Steering Pinch Bolt NHTSA: 21V864 TC: 2021-681 Make: Western Star Model: 49X Model Year: 2021 – 2022 Manufacture Dates: June 17, 2020 – October 7, 2021 At Issue: On certain vehicles the steering shaft may not have been properly installed on the steering gear. If the steering shaft was improperly installed it may separate from the steering gear resulting in a loss of steering control and risk of crash. Reason for this Action: In an abundance of caution DTNA will contact the Customer of Record on the suspect population, ahead of mailing the Final Recall Notification, to advise the Customer to contact their Servicing Dealer to have their inboard steering shaft assembly visually inspected to determine if the defect is evident on the vehicle (See attached defect inspection). Required Action: The Dealer Network is to inspect the vehicle. If the defect is found the Dealer is to contact the DTNA Customer Assistance Center (1-855-253-0422) for instructions on how to return the vehicle to service, as well as the documentation of vehicle’s inspection.
