May 19, 2022 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 22V355000
Brake Line Assembly Not Tightened Properly
A brake fluid leak can cause a loss of braking ability, increasing the risk of a crash.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 22V355
Manufacturer Navistar, Inc.
Components SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
Potential Number of Units Affected 15
Summary
Navistar, Inc. (Navistar
) is recalling certain 2022 International
CV vehicles. The pressure sensor fitting on the primary hydraulic brake line assembly may not be tightened correctly, resulting in a brake fluid
leak when the brakes are applied.
Remedy
Dealers will tighten the pressure sensor fitting, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on June 14, 2022. Owners may contact Navistar customer service at 1-800-448-7825. Navistar
’s number for this recall is 22510.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
DEFECT DESCRIPTION
The pressure sensor on the hydraulic brake line assembly may not be tightened to the correct torque and can result in a minor brake fluid leak when the brakes are applied. A minor leak in the hydraulic brake system can cause a soft pedal during braking, and in an emergency stop situation may increase the vehicle stopping distance possibly resulting in a vehicle crash.
MODELS INVOLVED
This safety recall involves certain Internationalยฎ CVโข Series trucks built 03/23/2022 thru 03/31/2022.
ELIGIBILITY
This procedure applies ONLY to vehicles marked in the Internationalยฎ Service Portal8M with Safety Recall 22510. Also complete any other open campaigns listed on the Service Portal at this time.
PARTS INFORMATION
There are no parts for this recall.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
GOVERNMENT REGULATION: Engine fluid (oil, fuel, and coolant) may be a hazard to human health and the environment. Handle all fluid and other contaminated materials (such as filters and rags) in accordance with applicable regulations. Recycle or dispose of engine fluids, filters, and other contaminated materials according to applicable regulations.
WARNING! To prevent personal injury and / or death, or damage to property, park vehicle on hard flat surface, turn the engine off, set the parking brake and install wheel chocks to prevent the vehicle from moving in either direction.
WARNING! To prevent personal injury and/ or death, always wear safe eye protection when performing vehicle maintenance.
WARNING! To prevent personal injury and / or death, or damage to property, allow engine/ vehicle components to cool before servicing.
WARNING! To prevent personal injury and / or death, or damage to property, keep flames or sparks away from vehicle and do not smoke while servicing the vehicle’s batteries. Batteries expel explosive gases.
1. Park vehicle on flat surface.
2. Shift transmission to Park or Neutral and set parking brake.
3. Turn vehicle ignition to Key OFF position.
4. Install wheel chocks.
5. Unlatch and open hood.
6. Using a torque wrench and a backup wrench, tighten sensor (Figure 1, Item 1) to 34 to 36 lb-ft (46 to 50 Nยทm).
7. If necessary, top off brake fluid to correct level.
8. If brake pedal feels soft or spongy, bleed brake system. Refer to technician manual.
9. Close and latch hood.
10. Remove wheel chocks.
