Potential Number of Units Affected 128
Summary
Cummins
, Inc. (Cummins
) is recalling certain 2020-2022 Cummins
Power Generation C500D6Re trailer-mounted generator sets (gensets). Incorrect logic in the output box door switch may cause the gensets to not shut down as intended when operated in parallel with other gensets.
Remedy
Cummins
will repair the electrical circuit, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed August 22, 2022. Owners may contact Cummins
customer service at 1-800-286-6467.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.safercar.gov.
Symptom
Some C500D6RE rental generator sets have incorrect door switch logic, disabling the generator set’s shut down command to paralleled generator sets when the busbar door is opened during paralleled operation of the generator set, potentially exposing the operator to energized electrical components.
Root Cause
Incorrect busbar door switch wiring.
Resolution
To correct the door switch logic, changes to the door switch wiring is required using retrofit kit (Girtz Part Number KTS20-0015-A01).
To order, contact Girtz Industries Inc. via email [email protected] with your container serial number (located behind rear
access doors), generator set serial number, shipping contact, and shipping address.
Chronology :
2/14/22 – Cummins
determined that there was a difference between the door switch logic on the subject model generator sets and certain other models of Cummins
generator sets.
2/14 – 4/19/22 – Cummins
investigated the issue and implemented changes to make the door switch logic consistent among generator set models.
4/19 – 6/28/22 – Cummins
conducted a Product Safety Hazard Analysis and escalated the issue through its Product Safety Defect Determination process.
6/28/22 – Based upon the results of the investigation, the Cummins
Product Safety Defect Board decided to conduct a safety campaign to address this condition.
To date, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries.

care cummins.com *** IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL*** NHTSA Recall No. 22V-464 Cummins
Campaign #C4935 August 22, 2022 Dear Cummins
Customer: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Cummins
Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Cummins
Power Generation C500D6Re trailer-mounted generator sets that were manufactured between November 3, 2020 and March 18, 2022. This notice applies to the generator(s) listed on the enclosed table. WHAT IS THE PROBLEM? If your generator set is being paralleled with certain other Cummins
generator sets, when an operator opens the output box door of either generator set, the controls may not shut down all the generator sets operating in parallel as intended. If the operator is not aware that the generator sets have not shut down, there is a risk he or she may contact energized electrical conductors, which presents the risk of burns, electric shock or arc flash, possibly resulting in personal injury. WHAT ARE WE DOING ABOUT THE PROBLEM? Cummins
has released Safety Campaign #C4935 “C500D6RE Door Switch Logic Corrective Action” to address this condition by installing a wiring harness modification kit to address this condition. This campaign is currently available at Cummins
Distributors and authorized Warranty Dealers. The repair will be completed free of charge and most applications will require approximately 5 hours to complete. WHAT SHOULD YOU DO? Contact the nearest Cummins
Distributor or authorized Warranty Dealer to arrange to have this safety action performed on your generator. The distributor or dealer will work with you to schedule the best date to complete this repair. In the meantime, Cummins
advises operators to heed the safety labels warning of exposure to energized electrical conductors that are present on the door of the output box If you have not registered your Cummins
product, please complete the enclosed registration card or register your product at https://prodreg.cummins.com/prodreg/#/webform/contactInfo. C. Cummins
