Dear Final Stage Manufacturer,
This notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.
The Shyft Group
, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022 and 2023 model year K2, K3 and K4 model Spartan RV
Chassis equipped with a steering gear supplied by RH Sheppard, Inc.
What is the problem?
Certain steering gears may have been assembled with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls which can lead to a fracture in the steering gear worm‐shaft and loss of vehicle steering.
What are the risks to motor vehicle safety?
A steering gear with fewer than the required number of recirculating balls may bind when loads are applied. In some cases, the balls may align on the same side of the gear’s worm‐shaft and concentrated loads may cause the gear’s internal parts to fracture resulting in loss of vehicle steering. Loss of steering increases the likelihood of a crash.
Preceding the internal fracture, the steering may be perceived as strained.
What should the final stage manufacturer do?
On the attached document, you will find a list of Spartan RV
chassis that have been sold to you. If you agree the identified chassis contains a safety defect, you are reminded of your responsibility to notify the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) in accordance with 49 C.F.R. 573. It is a violation of federal regulation to sell a vehicle subject to a safety recall without the recall first being remedied.
What is the Remedy?
The steering gear will be inspected to identify the suspect steering gear. An inspection should take no more than 0.5 hours.
If a suspect steering gear is identified, it will be replaced at no charge. Replacement of the steering gear may take up to 40 hours.
What will Spartan RV
Chassis do?
We will notify owners of the affected vehicles and direct them to the nearest service center to have the steering gear inspected, free of charge.
For additional assistance, you may call Spartan RV
Chassis Customer Product and Support at 855.589.9836 option 0.
We regret any inconvenience this situation may cause. The Shyft Group
, Inc. and its brands are committed to customer safety and satisfaction.
Chronology :
On, or near, June 8, 2022, Product Compliance became aware of R.H. Sheppard’s recall 22E-047. Due to an unrelated matter, the recall was sent to Shyft’s engineering team who then contacted Meritor
, the assembler of the Independent Front Suspension. On June 16, 2022 Sheppard confirmed serial numbers of gears that Shyft or Meritor
may have received. On, June 17, 2022, a stop ship was put in place at Shyft to inspect all suspect steering gears. Shyft continued to work with Meritor
to identify the small number of affected gears. Due to the inability to narrow the population, Shyft determined a defect relating to motor vehicle safety could exist in the affected vehicles on July 22, 2022. During a review of the file on 8/2/2022. for this recall in preparation for campaign launch, the beginning and end dates of manufacturing for the population and number of vehicles affected were determined to be incorrect.
