Summary
Altec Industries, Inc. (Altec) is recalling certain 2015-2022 DT65 and DT85 Aerial Devices. The weld between the base boom and the auger stow bracket could crack.
Remedy
Altec will inspect and repair cracks found in the base boom, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed October 7, 2022. Owners may contact Altec’s customer service at 1-877-462-5832. Altec’s number for this recall is CSN-3017.

For US owners, this notice is sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. For Canadian owners, this notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could affect the safety of a person.
Altec Industries, Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain DT65 and DT85 model units built from 2015 through August 2022. These units could develop cracks on the welded joints of the auger stow bracket. If a unit develops cracks, the failure could result in a falling auger. Death, serious injury, and/or damage could result from a falling auger.
Refer to the included notice for the items covered under the Altec Warranty Policy. If you had this repair performed before you received this notice, you may be eligible to receive reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. All work will be performed at no charge to the customer when presented for repair.

The inspection and repair can be performed by the customer, or you may contact Altec for further assistance. The inspection is expected to take 1 hour to complete. The repair is expected to take 5 hours to complete. Parts may not be immediately available due to supplier backorder. An extensive repair, which would require boom replacement, must be completed at an Altec Service facility. An extensive repair is not expected in most cases.

Chronology :
On July 13, 2022, Altec Service reported weld cracks on the auger stow brackets of customer units. Altec began investigating the crack’s failure mode and determined that the weld stresses were higher than desired. On August 2, 2022, a potential field action was opened to determine the severity, detectability, and potentially affected population. On August 4, 2022, Altec determined that a potential defect was present in a certain field population and determined that a field campaign was required. There have been no additional warranty claims or field reports identified. There have been no accidents, injuries, or deaths related to this issue.

Background: Altec has learned the affected units could develop a crack on the welded joints where the auger stow bracket is attached to the lower (base) boom. If not addressed, the cracking could cause the auger stow bracket to detach and fall, causing death, serious injury, and/or damage to the main structure of the lower boom. WARNING Death, serious injury, and/or damage to the lower boom could result from a falling auger. Cracking of the welded joint could cause the auger stow bracket to detach from the lower boom, causing the auger to fall. Customer Action: Inspect the auger stow bracket using the Inspection Procedure beginning on page 2, or contact Altec to perform this inspection. Order and install the Reinforcement Kit, part number 991535590, or schedule the installation of the kit by Altec. Complete the inspection no later than the next preventive maintenance interval or 60 days from the receipt of this CSN, whichever comes first. Installation of the reinforcement kit must be completed by the next service interval or one year from receipt of this notice, whichever comes first. Failure to inspect the unit and install the kit according to this CSN could result in major boom damage. A boom replacement, if required, must be completed prior to returning the unit to service. A boom replacement will only be covered under warranty when completed according to the instructions provided. Subsequent damage from failure to perform the required actions in the time period allowed will not be covered by warranty. Requirements: Every unit requires the installation of the proper kit for completion. The inspection is estimated to take 1 hour and 1 person to complete. The installation of the reinforcement kit is estimated to take 5 hours and 2 people to complete; a second person will be needed for fire watch during welding activities. All welds must be applied by a welder having the AWS D1.1 2G certification for horizontal welding on steel. A boom replacement, if required, must be completed at an Altec Service facility. Completion and Warranty: The inspection and repair are covered under the Altec Warranty Policy and can be performed by Altec, the customer, or the customer’s warranty provider. An Altec Mobile Service technician (MST) can perform this inspection but is not able to perform this repair. Altec will perform the work for free at an Altec facility. If the customer or the customer’s warranty provider performs the work, a Page 2 of 3 CSN-3017-A warranty claim must be submitted to be reimbursed for the cost of the parts and/or labor. Altec will allow up to $90 for the labor to perform the inspection and up to $450 for the labor to install the reinforcement kit. Customers are responsible for the travel costs of an Altec MST if the technician performs the inspection at the owner’s location. A boom replacement, if required, must be completed at an Altec Service facility and is covered under the Altec Warranty Policy. Read and understand all steps of the instructions before beginning the procedure. A ladder may be used instead of a raised work platform as long as the ladder can be positioned within the frame of work without the user leaning or standing above the top two rungs. 1. Position the unit on a level surface, and apply the parking brake. Engage the power take-off (PTO), chock the wheels, and properly set the outriggers. 2. Raise the boom, and rotate it counterclockwise. Make sure to give sufficient clearance to the chassis cab and boom rest. 3. Position the boom so that the lower boom can be reached from a raised work platform (refer to Figure 1). Figure 1 — Unit Setup 4. Disengage the PTO, and turn off the engine. Remove the key from the ignition, and secure it following your employer’s vehicle lockout/tagout procedure. 5. Place the raised work platform so that the auger stow bracket can be easily reached. Inspect the area where the auger stow bracket is welded to the lower boom (refer to Figure 2). Look for cracks along the welded joints on both sides. 8. Review the inspection results. • If there are no cracks, proceed to step 9. • If the area is cracked, proceed to step 10. 9. Put the unit back into service. a. Order the reinforcement kit, part number 991535590, or contact Altec Service to schedule the repair. b. Inspect the unit monthly until the kit is received and installed. If cracks develop, remove the unit from service and proceed to step 11. c. Install the kit within one year of the date of this CSN or by the next service interval, whichever comes first. d. Do not complete the remaining steps in this document. 10. Remove the unit from service. 11. Determine the crack severity. Do not return the unit to service until the proper repair is complete. • If the crack is in the weld only and has not affected the parent material of the lower boom, order and install the reinforcement kit, part number 991535590. • If the crack has propagated to the lower boom, contact Altec Service for a boom replacement. Altec began investigating the crack’s failure mode and determined that the weld stresses were higher than desired. On August 4, 2022, Altec determined that a potential defect was present in a certain field population and determined that a field campaign was required. If small cracks or no cracks are found, the cracks will be repaired. the upper horizontal auger stow support will be removed from the vertical plates, and a horizontal auger stow support bracket will be welded to the boom. This horizontal bracket will provide additional support to the auger stow and reduce the stress on the vertical plate welds. If the cracks are determined to be unrepairable, the base boom will be replaced. The recall remedy will be completed free of charge when presented for repair. The Altec Warranty Policy covers the recall remedy, including cases requiring reimbursement for the cost of obtaining a pre-notification remedy of the problem associated with this recall. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component : The crack occurs in the welds attaching the vertical plates to the base boom. The remedy plate is welded horizontally to the base boom removing the stress concentrations from the vertical plates. Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : The bracket was redesigned to move the stress from the vertical plates to a horizontal plate welded to the base boom.
