LPG Quick Disconnect Improperly Tightened

A gas leak in the presence of an ignition source increases the risk of a fire.

Summary

Forest River, Inc. (Forest River) is recalling certain 2022-2023 Coachmen Freelander, Leprechaun, and 2023 Coachmen Prism motorhomes. The auxiliary LPG quick disconnect may be improperly tightened, causing a gas leak.

 

Remedy

Dealers will inspect the quick disconnect, and tighten if necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed September 29, 2022. Owners may contact Forest River customer service at 1-574-825-8602. Forest River’s number for this recall is 210-1556.

Disconnect the vehicles’ battery Positive and Negative, disconnect any House battery(s) Positive and Negative, if equipped with a generator ensure it is off and lastly, ensure the vehicle is disconnected from shore power.  Block any tires/wheels to prevent the vehicle from rolling. Failure to do so may result in electrocution, fire or other personal injury, property damage and/or death.

INSPECTION:

STEP 1: LOCATE THE LPG QUICK DISCONNECT ON THE PASSENGER SIDE, REAR OF THE VEHICLE;

• IF THE LPG FITTING CAN BE MANIPULATED BY HAND (LOOSENED OR TIGHTENED) MOVE ON TO REMEDY;
• IF THE LPG FITTING IS TIGHT BY HAND, AND TIGHT/SEATED BY WRENCH, CLAIM INSPECTION CODE ONLY;

 

REMEDY:

STEP 1: USE THE APPROPRIATE SIZE WRENCH AS A BACKER WRENCH ON THE LINE, WHICH THE LPG QUICK DISCONNECT, THREADS INTO;

 

STEP 2: USE THE APPROPRIATE SIZE WRENCH ON THE BODY OF THE LPG QUICK DISCONNECT AND TIGHTEN   ACCORDING TO THE BELOW OUTLINES/EXAMPLES:

 

• TIGHTEN THE QUICK DISCONNECT:
• • IF YELLOW TEFLON TAPE IS PRESENT: 2 FULL TURNS
• • • ORIENT THE LEVER PARALLEL WITH THE GROUND
• • IF LP GAS THREAD SEALANT IS PRESENT: 1 FULL TURN
• • • ORIENT THE LEVER PARALLEL WITH THE GROUND

 

STEP 3: REQUIRED: PERFORM THREE (3) MINUTE LPG TEST AT 8” WATER COLUMN WITH A MANOMETER.

• IMPORTANT NOTICE: IF A LEAK IS DETECTED OUTSIDE OF THE QUICK DISCONNECT, THESE ARE REQUIRED TO BE CLAIMED UNDER A SEPARATE LABOR LINE AS THESE ARE NOT A PART OF THE RECALL.

 

STEP 4: CLAIM REPAIR CODE FOR REMEDY.

Dear Forest River Customer:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements Motor Vehicle Safety Act. This notice is also sent in
accordance with the requirements of the United States’ National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Forest River has
decided that a defect, which relates to the motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2022-2023 Coachmen Leprechaun,
Freelander and 2023 Prism Class C Motorhomes. This is to inform you that your vehicle may contain a defect that could
affect the safety of a person.

 

WHAT IS THE DEFECT/NONCOMPLIANCE?

The auxiliary LPG quick disconnect may leak LPG gas.

 

EVALUATION OF THE RISK TO THE VEHICLE AND OPERATOR(S) RELATED TO THE RECALL.

Excessive LP gas leak may lead to an explosion and fire, which may lead to property damage and personal injury.

 

WHAT IS FOREST RIVER AND OUR DEALERSHIPS GOING TO DO?

Forest River is notifying dealerships of the recall. Forest River will provide all parts and labor free of charge to Consumers
and Dealers. An authorized Forest River Dealer or Service Center will need to perform the remedy. An inspection will be
performed on the Quick Disconnect, if found to be loose it will be tightened to manufacture’s specs and complete and LPG
Drop Test to ensure there is not a leak present. It is preferable if you have your selling dealership perform the remedy.
Forest River completely covers your cost for the remedy; you will not receive any bill of sale for anything covered under
the above recall number.

 

WHAT SHOULD YOU DO?

Please contact your dealer immediately and request a service appointment to schedule the free remedy. The vehicle
Owner is responsible for arranging to have the work completed. Please state you have been notified by Forest River of
having a recall in process for your vehicle and provide the recall number for the dealership. It is also helpful to the
dealership to have a copy of this letter when you take your vehicle in for the recall remedy.

HOW LONG WILL THE REMEDY PROCESS TAKE?

The estimated time of repair is .30 hours. However, the dealership may need to keep your vehicle or schedule an
appointment with you for a later date to fit into their regular service schedule.

 

WHAT IF YOU HAVE PREVIOUSLY PAID FOR REPAIRS TO YOUR VEHICLE FOR THIS PARTICULAR CONDITION?

If you have already paid for a repair that is within the scope of this defect under recall, you still need to have this recall
inspected and/or performed to ensure the correct parts and procedures were utilized.

Additionally, you may be eligible for a refund of previously paid repairs. Refunds will only be provided for within the scope
of this defect under recall.

Chronology :

On August 5, 2022, during a routine Pre-Delivery Inspection (“PDI”), a vehicle was noted to have a loose LPG quick disconnect. The same day, manufacturing stopped shipping units until they checked all vehicles in their control. The manufacturing plant reported the concern to Forest Rivers Office of Corporate Compliance (“OCC”) on the divisions’ August General Managers Report on September 8, 2022.

On September 12, 2022, OCC opened a research concern for the item. On September 13, 2022, It was decided by Forest River OCC to present the concern to the Corporate Recall Committee on September 16, 2022 and was voted to recall
