REASON FOR THIS RECALL

WinnebagoeBay logo Motorhomes has decided that a defect related to motor vehicle safety exists on certain 2020 – 2023 View, Navion and Era Motorhomes. Our records indicate that you have purchased a vehicle with the serial number which appears above. These motor homes were manufactured March 01, 2019 through September 16, 2022.
WinnebagoeBay logo Motorhomes was informed by its supplier Carefree of Colorado that equipment recall 22E-094 was issued, where in some cases, retractable awnings are extending unintentionally. An awning that extends unintentionally while the motorhome is in motion could present a road hazard, which can increase the risk of a crash.

WHAT WE WILL DO

WinnebagoeBay logo Motorhomes and Carefree of Colorado will coordinate awning motor housing modifications and firmware updates. This will be at no charge to you.

WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

Please contact your WinnebagoeBay logo motorhome dealer or locate a WinnebagoeBay logo dealer at https://www.winnebago.com/shopping-tools/locate-a-dealer, immediately to arrange for an appointment. The labor time necessary to perform this correction will be approximately 4 hours. Please allow additional time for the dealer to process your vehicle.

AWNING – POWER

–If Equipped

CAUTION

Pinch Hazard. Ensure there are no people who could be harmed or objects that can be damaged. Failure to heed this warning could result in severe injury and/ or property damage.

Operating the Awning

  • Press and Hold the Power Awning switch IN or OUT to extend or retract the awning as desired.

CAUTION

Keep the Coach Battery ON when vehicle is in motion or in use. Coach batteries provide power to the awning active brake, preventing unintentional deployment. Failure to do so can result in property damage and, or personal injury.

Ignition Lockout System

The Ignition Lockout System will disable the extend function while the vehicle ignition key is in the On position. With this feature, the Awning will only extend when the vehicle ignition key is in the Off position. The Awning can retract anytime regardless of the ignition key position.

Further Information

For complete operating instructions, features, safety precautions, and maintenance care, refer to the Power Awning manufacturer’s information provided in your InfoCase.

Bluetooth Feature

The awning is equipped with a bluetooth feature that allows the user to extend and retract the awning. The app can be downloaded to your smart-phone via the appstore.

Awning Motion Sensor

The awning has a wind motion sensor that is powered by batteries. When the batteries die, there will be a beeping sound inside the coach indicating the need to replace them. The batteries are located in the lead rail on the motor side of the awning.

Awning motion sensor battery replacement (see below for details).

To replace the batteries:

1. Remove the screws and the rear cover from the module.

2. Remove the two batteries.

3. Make sure that the contact tabs are clean and bent out for best contact.

4. Insert new batteries. Match the new battery orientation with the old batteries.

Tip: Place the battery end next to the PC board first then swivel the other end into the case. This will set the batteries firmly into the case.

5. Check that the seal is in place and flat, and then attach the rear cover with the screws removed previously.

6. To Test: Hold the sensor vertically with the Carefree logo upright, repeatedly move the sensor vertically up and down to simulate a brisk wind. The awning should retract. If the awning does not retract, it may be necessary to pair the sensor to the BT12 Module. Follow the steps below.

7. After the module works correctly, install the module on the bracket.

NOTE: Bracket will be unattached in the lead rail. When the module is screwed onto the bracket it will tighten and bind in the lead rail.

Pairing the motion sensor may be necessary for replacements and upgrades, the steps are as follows:

1. Extend the awning using the switches.

2. Place the awning in pairing mode.

3. Insert the batteries into the module.

4. Hold the motion sensor next to the control module. The device should pair within 90 seconds.

5. To Test: Hold the sensor vertically with the Carefree logo upright, repeatedly move the sensor vertically up and down to simulate a brisk wind. The awning should retract.

6. Mount the module.

MOTOR WEDGE INSTALLATION

12V MOTORIZED ROOF MOUNTED BOX AWNING

Read this manual before installing or using this product. Failure to follow the instructions and safety precautions in this manual can result in personal injury and/or cause the product to not operate properly.

These instructions apply to all models listed. Details and procedures unique to a specific model are labeled appropriately.

PRODUCT OVERVIEW

This manual covers the installation of a motor wedge into the existing Carefree Freestyle Evolution awning.
The motor wedge is used to provide additional support to the motor in normal operations. Below is a schematic showing the motor wedge, a Right-Hand motor is shown.

INSTALLING THE MOTOR WEDGE

WARNING

If the awning is closed when the motor and end cap screws are removed, the spring arms will extend the awning quickly, possibly causing personal injury and damage to the awning.

1. Disconnect power to the awning.

2. If the awning is extended: Carefully push the lead rail toward the case so that the arms collapse. While holding the lead rail in this position, firmly tie the elbows of the spring arms together. Use a minimum 1/2″ rope – do not use bungee cords. When tying the rope, use a non-slip knot such as a square knot or equivalent.

3. If the awning is closed: Secure the lead rail in the closed position with at least 3 zip ties (tensile strength of 40lb or above) spaced equally along the awning.

CAUTION

Failure to secure the lead rail as described will allow the spring arms to unexpectedly extend out possibly causing personal injury and damage to the awning.

4. Remove the motor end cap screw and remove the Endcap and set aside. For installed awnings, you may need to loosen the bracket bolts to gain access to the motor Endcap, depending on motorcoach model. Please reference service manual 070036-301 for additional information if you need to partially remove your awning to perform the motor wedge installation procedure.

5. Remove the motor screws (x2) and the endplate screws (x5) using a #2 Phillips head bit and throw away. Do not reuse these screws.

6. Pull the endplate away from the case. Take care to not lose the small Endplate Spacer. The Motor Spacer should stay wedged inside the Endplate

7. With a flashlight, inspect the motor housing. Do not remove the motor from the roller tube. Pay particular attention to this highlighted zone. Inspect for any cracks. If there are no cracks visible, then the motor can continue to be used.

8. If there are cracks, please follow the instructions detailed in the section REPLACING THE MOTOR in service manual 070036-301

9. Install the motor wedge over the gear motor. The wedge will only fit one way onto the motor.

10. After installation of the motor wedge, reassemble all the parts. Pay particular attention to the Endplate Spacer, which will be loose once you remove the Endplate.

11. Attach the end plate to the motor with the motor screws provided in the replacement kit (x2). Use a #2 Phillips head bit and a torque limiting driver. Drive the screws until they are tight.

12. Align the screw holes in the end plate and attach the new 1 inch Torx head screws to the awning case (x5). Use a T20 bit to drive the Torx head screws.

13. While firmly holding the partially extended lead rail, carefully remove the spring arm ties previously installed. Allow the lead rail to extend until the fabric is taut. If using zip ties, carefully cut the zip ties. The lead rail should not move.

14. Attach the End Cap and screw.

15. Using the awning controls, verify function of the awning

a. Extend the awning fully. Note that the fabric is taut.

b. Retract the awning fully. Make sure that the lead rail sits into the case. Small gaps are acceptable but should be no bigger than 1/2″.

c. Extend the awning and shake the leadrail. The awning should close automatically.

Chronology :

In or about mid-April 2022, a third-party delivery driver, alerted WinnebagoeBay logo to an unintended partial awning deployment on a WinnebagoeBay logo View while in transit. Upon learning of this incident, an investigation was initiated which included a technical assessment of the issue as well as an analysis of customer complaints and warranty claims on similar models. The awning supplier, Carefree of Colorado, was notified and participated in this investigation. WinnebagoeBay logo Industries identified 8 unintended deployments, with at least one example of a full detachment of the awning. Upon completion of the investigation, the WinnebagoeBay logo Product Safety Committee reviewed the findings and decided that the concern may present a risk to motor vehicle safety.

After filing an initial Notice of Defect for this issue, WinnebagoeBay logo received 22 new complaints related to awning functionality, some of which were VOQs submitted directly to the NHTSA. Each complaint was reviewed, and additional data analysis was completed. WinnebagoeBay logo found that some of the new complaints were on vehicles with build dates going back to as early as July of 2019. In addition, the new complaints were confirmed to have exhibited similar types of failures as initial population. Therefore, WinnebagoeBay logo decided that the original scope of the recall did not capture all potentially impacted customers and expanded the population to go back to Model Year 2020 View, Navion, and Era models with build dates starting in mid-2019.

WinnebagoeBay logo Industries is not aware of any injuries or deaths associated with this issue.
