FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : The heat treat issue on the clamp can result in a crack on the clamp when the clamp bolt is torqued. This crack can lead to complete fracture of the clamp. Once the clamp is fractured, there is no longer clamp force on the tie rod cross tube that is securing the tie rod end. If only one clamp on the tie rod assembly is fractured, then the cross tube cannot rotate based on the clamp force being provided by the opposite clamp. At this point, the tie rod end with the fractured clamp is being retained only by the threads in the cross tube. Over time, this could lead to thread damage and the tie rod end could separate from the cross tube. This separation Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-719 Page 2 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 would most likely occur at low speeds, over rough roads or tight turns, when the tie rod loads are the highest. The separation would result in a partial loss of vehicle steering capability. If both clamps on the tie rod assembly fracture, then the cross tube could start to rotate. This rotation would lead to the tie rod end unscrewing from the cross tube. The initial effect would be a vehicle out of alignment and eventually could result in the tie rod end separating from the cross tube. The separation would result in a partial loss of vehicle steering capability. Dry park steer, rough roads, and low speed maneuvers are considered to be the scenarios where the tie rod will experience higher axial loads and when a tie rod end separation could occur. Description of the Cause : The clamps were improperly heat treated introducing excessive carbon. The cause of this excessive carbon was a damaged control board on one of the four furnaces at the forger. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : Defective clamps might not be easily detected if the clamp is painted or the crack is small. Fractured clamps are easily detected. A driver might be able to notice the additional play in the steering system or a misaligned vehicle before a separation occurs.
