A complete list of your affected vehicles, by VIN number, is attached to this notification. Dear Wabash National Corporation Customer, This notice is being sent to you in accordance with the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. Wabash National Corporation (WNC) has decided that a FMVSS noncompliance which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2020-2023 Wabash National Van trailers equipped with Waltco Dual Ramp liftgates. Description of Defect: Waltco Dual Ramp lift gates installed on the back of certain Wabash trailers have obscured the Wabash-installed rear conspicuity tape placed at deck height per FMVSS 108. Risk to Motor Vehicle Safety: The rear deck height is not identified as required in S8.2.3 of FMVSS 108; limited visibility of the rear of a trailer to nearby drivers could increase the risk of a crash. Remedy: Some vehicles within the affected population may have already been remedied. A visual inspection of the rear of the vehicle is needed to see if the conspicuity tape is present at deck height on the rear-facing surface of the lift gate ramps themselves. This inspection should take place as soon as practical, but not to exceed your normal PM cycle. Note that a standard walkaround inspection may not identify whether the noncompliance is present. For vehicles that are noncom pliant, you may perform this recall remedy and be reimbursed by Wabash National, or you may contact your nearest Wabash National Warranty Provider to arrange for the recall remedy to be performed at no cost to you. The time necessary to perform this recall remedy is approximately 10 minutes. • If you choose to complete the recall remedy yourself: Enclosed with this notification are work instructions for installing conspicuity tape on the rearfacing surface of the lift gate ramps. The equipment listed therein should be inspected and remedied per the instructions included with this notification. Conspicuity tape will be provided by Wabash National at no cost. Wabash began an investigation and identified that the lift gates obscured the Wabash-installed conspicuity tape at the lower rear edge of the affected trailers. 8/24/22 – After research, it was discovered Wabash did not install the lift gates on these trailers, so Wabash contacted the third-party installer hired by the customer. To remedy units in production, Wabash instructed the installer to start installing rear deck height conspicuity tape on the lift gates to meet FMVSS 108, and Wabash installed conspicuity tape on the supplier-installed lift gates on units that remained in Wabash’s control. 8/25/22 – A Quality Concern Report was issued to create Product Safety Team (PST) awareness. 8/30/22 – At PST meeting, voted to escalate to the Product Safety Committee (PSC). 10/3/22 – After continued discussions with engineering, legal, and the supplier (Waltco), the PSC voted to conduct a voluntary recall for an FMVSS 108 noncompliance. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Wabash will supply FMVSS 108-compliant conspicuity tape at no charge to the single customer affected by this noncompliance and will include installation instructions to ensure the conspicuity tape is installed at rear deck height as required by FMVSS 108. Wabash will reimburse the customer for any costs already incurred to remedy this noncompliance, consistent with Wabash’s recall reimbursement policy.
