Chin Bar may Detach in a Crash

The deteriorated polycarbonate material may result in the chin base detaching during an impact, increasing the risk of injury.

Summary

Dainese S.p.A (Dainese) is recalling certain AGV Carbon Modular motorcycle full-face, flip-up helmets, model AGV 580. The glue applied to the screws that secure the chin bar components together may have contacted the chin base polycarbonate material causing it to deteriorate prematurely.

 

Remedy

Dainese will notify owners, and dealers will replace the helmets, free of charge. The recall began February 12, 2018. Owners may contact Dainese customer service at 1-855-327-5639.

IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NHTSA Recall No. 18E006

 

Dear AGV Helmet Owner:

This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act.

Dainese S.p.A has determined that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exits in certain AGV Sport Carbon Modular helmets. Accordingly, Safety Recall Notice 18E066 was released on January 22, 2018.

Sales and distribution records indicate that you may have purchased one of the recalled helmets.

 

! IMPORTANT !

 

Your AGV Sport Carbon Modular Helmet is being recalled.

You should immediately return your helmet to Dainese USA Inc. The recall replacement helmet will be provided to you at no charge.

Why is a recall being conducted?	The carbon chin guard and chin base movement are secured to the carbon shell of the motorcycle helmet using screws. To avoid the unscrewing of the screws, a cyanoacrylate glue was applied to the screws. During installation, the glue may come into contact with the polycarbonate chin base. If the glue comes into contact with the polycarbonate chin base, a chemical reaction may occur, which, over time, may cause the polycarbonate material to wear and prematurely deteriorate. In the event the helmet receives an impact, and the polycarbonate material is worn or has prematurely deteriorated, the chin base could become detached from the shell, increasing the risk of injury.
What are we doing about the problem?	We will replace your helmet free of charge with a new helmet that uses an epoxy glue that will not cause a chemical reaction in the polycarbonate material.

SAFETY RECALL NOTICE

Dear AGV Dealer,

Dainese S.p.A has determined that a safety defect exists in certain AGV Sport Carbon Modular motorcycle helmets. Accordingly, Safety Recall 18E066 was released on January 22, 2018.

 

What Products Are Affected?

This recall involves AGV Sport Carbon Modular motorcycle helmets, Model AGV 580, manufactured from June 1, 2017 through January 19, 2018.

 

What is the Problem?

The defect involves a cyanoacrylate glue that was applied to screws that secure the carbon chin guard to the shell of the motorcycle helmet. If the glue comes into contact with the polycarbonate chin base, a chemical reaction may occur, which, over time, may cause the polycarbonate material to wear and prematurely deteriorate.
In the event the helmet receives an impact, and the polycarbonate material is worn or has prematurely deteriorated, the chin base could become detached from the shell, increasing the risk of injury.

 

What Should You Do?

Product Remaining in Your Inventory. Dealers with unsold units in inventory should return them to Dainese. Dainese will replace your inventory with an improved helmet that uses an epoxy glue, which will not cause a chemical reaction to the polycarbonate material.

Product Sold to Consumers. Dealers and retailers that previously sold the recalled product to consumers are asked to check internal records and provide their contact information to Noah Arundel, In-house Sales & Customer Service Manager at 1-855-327-5639 or by email at sportmodular.recall@dainese.com. Dainese will notify these owners using a NHTSAapproved Part 577 owner notification letter beginning the week of February 5, 2018. The customer notification letters will provide instructions for obtaining a replacement helmet free of charge.

If a customer returns a recalled helmet to your location, you must accept the recalled helmet. Please notify the customer that Dainese will ship the customer a replacement helmet. You must obtain the customer’s full name, mailing address, telephone number and e-mail address and provide this information to Dainese USA, Inc., Attn: Noah Arundel, In-house Sales & Customer Service Manager, 1001 Brioso Dr., Costa Mesa, CA 92627, 1-855-327-5639, email: sportmodular.recall@dainese.com. You must also ship the helmet to Dainese at this address.

If the customer requests a refund for the recalled helmet, please provide a full refund through your current warranty reimbursement procedures.

It is a violation of Federal law for you to sell or lease the AGV Sport Modular helmets covered by this notification. Substantial civil penalties apply to violations of this law.
