IMPORTANT SAFETY RECALL NHTSA Recall Number: 22V-829 This notice applies to your vehicle(s): (Insert VIN or VINs) December 13, 2022 Dear Proterra Transit Bus Owner: This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. What is the reason for this notice? Proterra has decided that a defect that relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain 2022 ZX5 Transit Buses. The interlock override switch was not installed during production. Without the switch, the driver may be unable to override the interlock system and move the vehicle, necessitating the transfer of passengers to another vehicle and increasing the risk of injury. Why is your vehicle being recalled? The interlock override switch was not installed during production of the vehicles within the recall population. Proterra will provide a repair of the recalled vehicles at no cost to you. We apologize for the inconvenience. We are committed to your safety, the safety of your customers, and your continued satisfaction with our products, and we will work with you to promptly remedy the recalled vehicles. IMPORTANT • Your Proterra vehicle is subject to NHTSA Safety Recall No. 22V-829 because the interlock override switch was not installed during production. • Proterra will remedy the issue. What will Proterra Do? Proterra will provide the owner with an interlock override switch and installation instructions, free of charge. Service repair instructions are provided in service campaign SC-22-163. Proterra customers should submit a warranty claim for the labor associated with the repair, which is estimated to be approximately thirty (30) minutes. What Should You Do? You should follow the instructions provided by Proterra and install the interlock override switch that will be provided to you. What If You Have Already Repaired the Defect? If you have previously paid for a repair that addresses the defect described in this letter, you still need to ensure the correct parts and procedures were used. All buses delivered to the two customers identified are included in the population. The recalled vehicles differ from vehicles not included in the recall population because they do not have an interlock override switch installed. Production Dates : SEP 28, 2022 – OCT 10, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : In the buses delivered to the two customers, an interlock override switch was inadvertently not installed during production. The interlock system stops the bus from moving when certain conditions are detected. The interlock override switch allows the driver to manually bypass the interlock to move the bus. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : In the event the interlock system is engaged and the driver is unable to override the system and move the bus, there could be an increased risk of injury due to the need to transfer passengers to alternate transportation in a potentially uncontrolled traffic condition. Proterra has not received any report of any accidents resulting from this defect. There are no reported crashes or injuries. Description of the Cause : During the production process, the interlock override switch was inadvertently not installed in buses delivered to two customers. The bus operator was unable to move the vehicle due to the lack of an interlock override switch. This issue was reported to Proterra in mid- October 2022. Proterra reviewed the production and quality records to determine why the bus did not have the interlock override switch, as well as the records of other buses manufactured in the same time frame. Proterra confirmed that the issue only pertained to the buses identified in the recall population. On October 31st, Proterra’s Quality Compliance Steering Committee met and decided to conduct a voluntary safety recall to address this issue. As of the date of this report, Proterra knows of no crashes, injuries, or fatalities associated with this issue.
