The issue concerns the 7/8’’ bolts (3) that secure the steering gearbox mounting plate assembly to the vehicle frame. We have identified that you have some vehicles equipped with this configuration. We recommend that an inspection be performed on these specific vehicles to confirm that the suspected bolts are not found loose: • Visual inspection to confirm the presence of the three (3) bolts; • Visual inspection to confirm the torque seal marks are not broken on these bolts; • Torque inspection and retorque of these bolts to the nominal value of 452 N.m. • Apply new torque seal marks to the bolts. If you identify any non-conformity during inspection, we that request pictures, location and any other relevant information be communicated to Nova Bus for further analysis. All results should be reported back to your Nova Bus service representative (see pictures above for inspection numbering). Nova Bus is currently completing its investigation and testing potential corrective actions. Further documentation and instructions will be provided shortly to correct this potential issue. Locate and remove one of the three bolts N91461 securing the steering box to the structure. Discard the bolt and Nord-Lock washer. Loosen the other two bolts but don’t remove them yet to keep the correct alignment with the holes. # 1 Figure 3 – Location and Torque Sequence of the Three Bolts N91461 1.6. Remove the under coating on the structure and make sure the surface for the Nord-Lock washer is clean. Use a pry bar to lift slightly the gear box mounting plate to release the spherical washer. Use a magnetic tool or a small screwdriver to remove the spherical washer. Discard the spherical washer. See next figures. Figure 5 – Use a Pry Bar to Lift Slightly the Gear Box Mounting Plate 1.8. Clean the surfaces and the threads with brake cleaner (or an equivalent product locally approved). Use pressurized air with care for drying and final cleaning. 1.9. Insert the new spacer N620000207. Use a magnetic tool or a small screwdriver to insert the spacer. Using a regular ratchet wrench, turn each bolt until it sits on the structure. Do not apply any torque to the bolts. Figure 7 – Install Bolts (Do Not Torque) 1.10. Engage a new bolt N91461 and Nord-Lock washer hand tight. Follow the torquing sequence numbers shown in figure 3. 1.14. Torque each bolt to 11 lb-ft (15 N·m). If the bolt head does not seat on the structure at this value, use a pry bar to attempt to better align the gearbox and plate and re-attempt until successful. 1.15. Following the same sequence, torque each bolt to 73.6 lb-ft (100 N·m). 1.16. Following the same sequence, mark the socket with a 90-degree angle using a paint marker: trace two vertical lines at 90 degrees to each other (12 o’clock and 3 o’clock). See the figure below. 1.17. Using the socket, report the 90-degree mark on the structure. Refer to the figure below. For bolt # 2, we suggest marking the exterior of the reinforcement plate surrounding the bolt. 1.18. Also mark the bolt head-initial position according to the structure starting mark. See the figure below. Following the same torquing sequence, using a breaker bar, align the socket with the marks previously made on the structure. Turn the bolt clockwise until the first mark is now aligned with the second mark confirming you applied a 90-degree angle torque. 1.20. In addition, following the same torquing sequence, torque each bolt to 500 ft-lb (678 N·m). The bolt may move or not at this final torque. Both situations are acceptable. 1.21. Apply under coating touch up with Tectyl 3344 or equivalent on the exposed metal. 1.22. Apply a torque seal to the head of the bolts. 1.23. Validate proper functionality of power steering by turning wheels from one end to the other. 1.24. The vehicle can return in service. Following the same torquing sequence, using a breaker bar, align the socket with the marks previously made on the structure. Turn the bolt clockwise until the first mark is now aligned with the second mark confirming you applied a 90-degree angle torque. 1.20. In addition, following the same torquing sequence, torque each bolt to 500 ft-lb (678 N·m). The bolt may move or not at this final torque. Both situations are acceptable. 1.21. Apply under coating touch up with Tectyl 3344 or equivalent on the exposed metal. 1.22. Apply a torque seal to the head of the bolts. 1.23. Validate proper functionality of power steering by turning wheels from one end to the other. 1.24. The vehicle can return in service. PROCEDURE 1.1. Park the vehicle on an even surface with the transmission on neutral. 1.2. Apply the parking brake and set the master control switch to the stop position. 1.3. Set the battery disconnect switch in the battery compartment to the off position . .(pcAUTION For information on hoisting and towing of the vehicle, see section 18: HOISTING AND TOWING in the Nova Bus maintenance manual. Use appropriate hoisting equipment for your protection and to prevent damage to the vehicle. 1.4. Raise the vehicle. The gear box is located under the front left of the vehicle. Locate and remove one of the three bolts N91461 securing the steering box to the structure. Discard the bolt and Nord-Lock washer. Loosen the other two bolts but don’t remove them yet to keep the correct alignment with the holes. # 1 Figure 3 – Location and Torque Sequence of the Three Bolts N91461 1.6. Remove the under coating on the structure and make sure the surface for the Nord-Lock washer is clean. Use a jack stand to lift slightly the gear box mounting plate to release the spherical washer. Use a magnetic tool or a small screwdriver to remove the spherical washer. Discard the spherical washer. See next figures. Figure 5 – Use a Jack Stand to Lift Slightly the Gear Box Mounting Plate 1.8. Clean the surfaces and the threads with brake cleaner ( or an equivalent product locally approved). Use pressurized air with care for drying and final cleaning. 1.9. Insert the new spacer N620000207. Use a magnetic tool or a small screwdriver to insert the spacer. Using a regular ratchet wrench, turn each bolt until it sits on the structure. Do not apply any torque to the bolts. Figure 7 – Install Bolts (Do Not Torque) 1.10. Engage a new bolt N91461 and Nord-Lock washer hand tight. Follow the torquing sequence numbers shown in figure 3. 1.14. Torque each bolt to 11 lb-ft (15 N·m). If the bolt head does not seat on the structure at this value, use a pry bar to attempt to better align the gearbox and plate and re-attempt until successful. 1.15. Following the same sequence, torque each bolt to 73.6 lb-ft (100 N·m). 1.16. Following the same sequence, mark the socket with a 90-degree angle using a paint marker: trace two vertical lines at 90 degrees to each other (12 o’clock and 3 o’clock). See the figure below. 1.17. Using the socket, report the 90-degree mark on the structure. Refer to the figure below. For bolt # 2, we suggest marking the exterior of the reinforcement plate surrounding the bolt. 1.18. Also mark the bolt head-initial position according to the structure starting mark. See the figure below. Following the same torquing sequence, using a breaker bar, align the socket with the marks previously made on the structure. Turn the bolt clockwise until the first mark is now aligned with the second mark confirming you applied a 90-degree angle torque. 1.20. In addition, following the same torquing sequence, torque each bolt to 500 ft-lb (678 N·m). The bolt may move or not at this final torque. Both situations are acceptable. 1.21. Apply under coating touch up with Tectyl 3344 or equivalent on the exposed metal. 1.22. Apply a torque seal to the head of the bolts. 1.23. Validate proper functionality of power steering by turning wheels from one end to the other. 1.24. The vehicle can return in service. Nova Bus (US) Inc. has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain Nova Bus LFS and LFS Artic MY2018-2022 manufactured from June 2018 to November 2022 and equipped with a Bosch steering gear box configuration. You are advised not to drive your vehicle until a remedy is performed. Nova Bus (US) Inc. have voluntarily submitted a Vehicle Recall Report to NHTSA that generated the Safety Recall 22V845. The service document CR5344 explaining the measures to be taken for the interim remedy for the affected vehicles is published on its web site https://us.novabus.com/customer-portal/. The vehicle can be interimly remedied starting from November 16th, 2022. The interim remedy consists of a periodic inspection and re-tightening of the fasteners to the original torque value for this configuration, and should take approximately 15 minutes to complete if it has not been completed already. Nova Bus is currently completing its analysis and testing potential permanent remedies. The service document CR5342 explaining the measures to be taken for the permanent remedy for the affected vehicles will be published on its web site shortly https://us.novabus.com/customer-portal/. The vehicle are expected to be permanently remedied starting from November 30th, 2022. The permanent remedy will consist of a hardware change and a different tightening strategy, and should take approximately 30 minutes to complete. The necessary replacement parts will be available via the Nova Bus Parts distribution network. Nova Bus (US) Inc. will cover the parts and labour costs of the repair according to the warranty claim policies in effect. Certain affected vehicles equipped with a Bosch steering gear box installation may not have sufficient clamp load which may lead to the steering gear box mounting plate sub-assembly fasteners to become low torque, loose or missing. Under certain conditions, an improperly clamped steering gear box not detected may lead to 2 out of 3 fasteners missing and this may increase the risk of a loss of steering. Loss of steering can increase the risk of a crash. The driver may notice vibrations or a looseness in the steering wheel, a steering wheel hard to turn and/or noises while steering the vehicle. Periodic maintenance may also detect low torque, loose and/or missing fasteners in the steering gear box system. Production Dates : JUN 28, 2018 – OCT 07, 2021 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : Under certain conditions, a certain configuration of steering gear box installation may not have sufficient clamp load which may lead to the steering gear box mounting plate sub-assembly fasteners to become low torque, lose or missing. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Under certain conditions, an improper clamped steering gear box not detected may lead to 2 out of 3 fasteners missing and this may increase the risk of a loss of steering. Loss of steering can increase the risk of a crash. A containment remedy will be shortly released until the permanent remedy is released. Nova Bus has not received any report of injury or death associated with this defect. Therefore, we consider this as a proactive measure to protect the public from the potential safety risk associated with this defect. Description of the Cause : The clamp load scatter inherent to the manufacturing process of the components selected to fasten this joint was not assessed properly and may lead to insufficient clamp load under certain conditions. Identification of Any Warning that can Occur : The driver may feel vibrations or a loose in the steering wheel, a steering wheel hard to turn and/or ear noises while steering the vehicle. Periodic maintenance may also detect low torque, loose and/or missing fasteners in the steering gear box system. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Nova Bus will provide service documents to perform the containment remedy and the permanent remedy. The containment remedy consists of a periodic inspection and retorquing of the fasteners to the original torque value for this configuration. The permanent remedy will consist of a hardware change currently limiting the maximum clamp load and a different torquing strategy to increase the clamp load nominal value and reduced the clamp load scatter. All costs associated with this corrective measure will be covered by Nova Bus. Pre-notification remedies will be addressed using the general reimbursement plan on file with NHTSA.
