Basis for Determination of the Recall Population: The supplier of the electric vehicle battery notified DTNA of the specific part serials with a potential defect. At the current time, certain vehicles, determined by supplier’s battery serial numbers, are included in the recall population. However, as DTNA continues to investigate, the population may be amended. Number potentially involved: 9 Estimated percentage of involved with defect: 100% Defect / Noncompliance Description For this Defect/Noncompliance: Describe the defect or noncompliance: The supplier indicated that the defect occurs due to a defect in the joint of a foil pack in the harness. This results in a loss communication between the battery and the battery management system (BMS). The battery pack would be powered down and result in a change in the vehicles state of charge (SOC). The MT50e features a series battery configuration, thus the vehicle if affected would see a sudden loss of power. DTNA is not aware of any warranty, field or service occurrences related to this failure. There are no death and/or injuries. Park the vehicle in a bay with a lift, turn the keyswitch to the OFF position, place the transmission in neutral or park, and set the parking brake. Chock the tires. DANGER Decommission the vehicle and verify the high voltage system is shut down. Failure to follow these steps could result in serious personal injury or death. 3. Decommission the vehicle. 4. Clamp the coolant lines that lead to the battery packs. NOTE: One clamp can be placed at the outlet of the chiller, and the other clamp can be placed on the coolant line, above the battery packs. The clamp above the battery pack is easily accessible through a panel in the floor of the vehicle. 5. Remove the 12 fasteners from the rear of the cradle and 10 fasteners from the front of the cradle, then remove the cradle from under the battery. Raise the vehicle high enough and place the jack table under the battery. 11. Lower the vehicle down to the point where the battery rests on the jack table, but the weight of the vehicle is not supported by the jack table. 12. To access the mounting fasteners, remove the three access panels from each side of the battery pack (total six), using a torch bit. Install the coolant lines (total four) from each battery pack, and remove the line clamps. 23. Install the cradle. Tighten the fasteners 118 lbf·ft (160 N·m). 24. Lower the vehicle to the floor. NOTE: The tires will have to be chocked if the lift is not a tire-style lift. 25. Fill the coolant. 26. Commission the vehicle. 27. Test drive the vehicle for functionality of all normal operations. 28. According to the supplier, these battery packs, due to a potential defect in the foil harness, may lose communication between the battery and Battery Management System. In the configuration of battery packs used on the MT50e, that loss of communication, in turn, could potentially result in loss of vehicle power. DTNA investigated the issue and out of an abundance of caution decided to recall on the supplier’s early notification. Production Dates : APR 20, 2022 – JUN 24, 2022 VIN Range 1 : Begin : NR End : NR Not sequential Description of Defect : Description of the Defect : The supplier indicated that the defect occurs due to a defect in the joint of a foil pack in the harness. This results in a loss communication between the battery and the battery management system (BMS). The battery pack would be powered down and result in a change in the vehicles state of charge (SOC). The MT50e features a series battery configuration, thus the vehicle if affected would see a sudden loss of power. FMVSS 1 : NR FMVSS 2 : NR Description of the Safety Risk : Failure mode could result in a loss of power, which in turn could increase the possibility of a crash. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Battery-HV, Proterra, MT50e Component Description : HV Battery Pack Component Part Number : 66-25763-000 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer Name : Proterra Address : 1 Whitlee Ct. Greenville South Carolina 29607 Country : United States Chronology : DTNA learned on 11/18/2022 of the intent of Proterra to recall for a potential defect. 11/21/2022, DTNA immediately began investigating the battery serial list provided by Proterra to find potentially affected vehicles and locate uninstalled components. On 11/23/2022 out of an abundance of caution, DTNA decided to recall. In December, 2022, DTNA received a revised list of affected battery serial numbers from the supplier and, upon cross-referencing that list with production vehicle delivery information, determined that the population of affected US MT50e units was eight (one less than originally reported); DTNA amends this notification accordingly. Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : Inspection and repair, if required, will be performed by certified HV3 Daimler Truck North America authorized service facilities. Daimler Truck North America shall be offering a refund for owner-paid repairs covered by this recall if the repair was performed prior to the date indicated in the reimbursement plan, which will be posted with owner’s notification letter.
