A second EasyMile Gen2 EZ10 Vehicle exhibited smoking while charging. Defective 48V batteries, manufactured by E4V in 2017, caused these incidents. The root cause of the 48V battery defect is still being investigated. One vehicle caught fire and the other was smoking. September 21, 2022: EasyMile initiated an investigation into the cause of the September 20, 2022 Gen2 EZ10 vehicle fire incident and the cause of the separate September 20, 2022 Gen2 EZ10 vehicle smoking incident. September 22, 2022 to November 25, 2022: Examinations of the two Gen2 EZ10 vehicles involved in the September 20, 2022 fire and smoking incidents indicated the fire and smoke were caused by the vehicles’ 48V batteries. EasyMile communicated with NHTSA in late September and early October regarding the September 21 incidents. As a precautionary measure, and at NHTSA’s direction, EasyMile instructed the two owners of the other Gen2 EZ10 vehicles equipped with 48V batteries to disconnect the batteries from the Gen2 EZ10 vehicles and to stop using the affected batteries. During its communications with NHTSA, NHTSA verbally told EasyMile to file a 573 report. Based on the available information, EasyMile determined that the 48V batteries on the four Gen2 EZ10 vehicles may be defective. After reviewing this information, Easymile determined the potential fire risk constituted a safety-related defect. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 22V-924 Page 3 The information contained in this report was submitted pursuant to 49 CFR §573 Description of Remedy : Description of Remedy Program : All affected 48V batteries have been removed from the four Gen2 EZ10 vehicles and Li-Cycle (qualified vendor) will decommission the batteries. The two vehicles involved in the September 21, 2022 incident will be destroyed. One of the two remaining vehicles has been decommissioned with the affected batteries removed and will be used for research and development of future-generation electric vehicles . Replacement batteries with a newer technology will be installed in the one remaining active Gen2 EZ10 vehicle. It is EasyMile’s understanding, based on communications with NHTSA, that owner-notice letters will not be required given that all defective batteries have been removed from all affected vehicles.
