Summary
Williamsen-Godwin Truck Body Company LLC (Williamsen-Godwin) is recalling certain WPED5W-SL2255 trailers equipped with Smart-Steer 2.0 self-steering axles. The steering arm may fracture during certain conditions, such as low speed and high side-loading.
Remedy
Dealers will install a new steering arm and additional welds, free of charge. The manufacturer has not yet provided a schedule for recall notification. Owners may contact Williamsen-Godwin customer service at 1-801-973-9400.

Please be reminded that under 49 U.S.C. § 30112(a)(3), it is illegal for a manufacturer, to sell, offer for sale, import, or introduce or deliver into interstate commerce, a motor vehicle or item of motor vehicle equipment that contains a safety defect once the manufacturer has notified NHTSA about that safety defect. This prohibition does not apply once the motor vehicle or motor vehicle equipment has been remedied according to the manufacturer’s instructions.
As stated in Part 573.7, submission of the first of eight consecutive quarterly status reports is required within one month after the close of the calendar quarter in which notification to purchasers occurs. Re: Safety Recall – Smart-Steer 2.0 Self-Steer Axle with 702887 Steer Arm Dexter Trailer Products of Canada Corporation (“Dexter Canada” (Ingersoll Axles)) has determined that ce1tain self – steer axles installed or distributed by your company may contain a defect which could be a safety risk under certain conditions or applications. Accordingly, a recall (NHTSA ID 22£-080) to address this issue was initiated effective September 21, 2022. This potential defect and the remedy are detailed in the attached Service Bulletin SB015 dated September 21, 2022. The affected axles aremodels ofthe Smart-Steer 2.0 self-steering axle with the 702887 bolt-on steer arm built from October 13, 2017 to October 30, 2022. Dexter Canada has determined that under ce1tain heavy loading conditions the steer arm attached to the knuckle can potentially shear. If this condition occurs, the upper section of the sheared steer arm will remain attached to theknuckle by themounting boltsand lower section ofthe steer arm will remain attached to the tie-rod assembly but potentially drag along the ground. At no time will the vehicle become uncontrollable and the operator will be able to safely operate until they can secure the axle under the vehicle. The repair, which is outlined in the Service Bulletin SB015 (attached), must be performed at a Dexter Canada authorized facility and will be at no cost to the owner (Dexter Canada will pay the cost of the prescribed repair). Please provide all known owners ofyour trailers which contain an affected axle with a recall notice with the specific instructions for the repair, as well the locations and contact information for authorized repair facilities.
