Summary
ABS Remorques (ABS) is recalling certain 2014-2023 RC, WC, LRC, and LWC semi-trailers. The coupling plate may deteriorate, resulting in failure of the king pin and trailer detachment.
Remedy
Semi-trailer owners are advised to inspect for any coupling plate or king pin damage prior to operation. If damage is found, owners should not operate the trailer until it has been repaired. ABS authorized service facilities will replace the coupling plates, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed March 2, 2023. Owners may contact ABS customer service at 819-879-6216.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Coupling Plate Replacement Procedure
Coupling plate replacement on ABS trailers MY2014 to MY2023
Chronology :
September 2nd, 2022: ABS is informed that a king pin has failed on one of its units resulting from a problem with the coupling plate, but no death or injury has occurred. The repairs are made, and an analysis is requested on said coupling plate, but no results are obtained by the external lab because of the corrosion of the semitrailer.
November 16th, 2022: ABS is informed that another unit has suffered from the same defect as previously mentioned, again without any death or injury. Repairs are subsequently made, and an in-depth investigation begins on other semi-trailers to evaluate the problem. Following various visual inspections on ABS โsemitrailers by ABSโ warranty and engineering team, ABS started doubting the robustness of the coupling plate.
In December 2022 and January 2023, ABS, upon further investigation and reviews, conducted an analysis of the coupling plate and the king pin, and determined that the coupling plate was not robust enough to withstand loads which may occur in this configuration. Redesign activities were initiated to design a coupling plate that will be able to withstand loads based on collected road load data.
On January 10, 2023, ABS determined that a safety recall is warranted for some of its trailers.

Defect relating to coupling plate weakness in semi-trailers made between 2014 and 2023 This notice is sent to you in accordance with the requirements of the National Traffic and Motor Vehicle Safety Act. ABS Remorques Inc. (โABSโ) has decided that a defect which relates to motor vehicle safety exists in certain ABS semi-trailers manufactured between March 3rd, 2014 and December 9th, 2022 in Val-des-Sources, Quebec (Canada) (the โAffected Unitsโ).
Description of defect and risk to motor vehicle safety:
The defect consists of the potential weakness of the coupling plate leading to a premature deterioration of the said plate and may lead to the king pin to fail. It has been determined that under certain load conditions, the coupling plate may show signs of premature deterioration such as tears, weaknesses, damages, bending, and loose, missing, or other signs of abnormal wear, tear or any breakage or damage which may result in the king pin to fail. If this condition occurs, the semi-trailer could detach from the tractor and therefore the semi-trailer could become uncontrollable for the operator with the

possibility of overturning or blocking the road. Part 573 Safety Recall Report 23V-005 Page 2 Description of the Cause : ABS determined that the coupling plate was not robust enough to withstand loads which may occur in this configuration Identification of Any Warning
that can Occur : If this condition occurs, the semi-trailer could detach from the tractor and therefore the semi-trailer could become uncontrollable for the operator with the possibility of overturning or blocking the road. This condition can cause injuries, property damage, bodily injury, and death. Involved Components : Component Name 1 : Coupling plate on ABS trailers MY2014 to MY2023 Component Description : Coupling plate
Component Part Number : A-12-000 – A-12-800 Supplier Identification : Component Manufacturer
Name : ABS Remorques Address : 445, Boul industriel
Boul industriel Val-des-Sources Foreign States J1T 4V4
Country : Canada Chronology :
After receiving recent claims regarding the failure of the king pin in some of ABSโ semi-trailers, ABS has investigated the cause of said failures. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : ABS will conduct a voluntary safety recall at no charge to the vehicle
owners. ABS will inform the vehicle owners in the owner notification letter that it will conduct the recall and provide the contact information. The repair, which is outlined in the Coupling Plate Replacement Procedure, must be performed at an ABS authorized facility and will be at no cost to the owners (ABS will pay the cost of the prescribed repair). Semi-trailer owners must take their equipment to any repair shop ABS has approved.
ABS will consider authorizing additional facilities if there are none in an ownerโs area. Until the repairs are performed in accordance with the instructions set out in Coupling Plate Replacement Procedure, semi-trailer owners shall make sure to inspect their semi-trailer(s) in accordance with the attached inspection procedure for any indication of tears, weaknesses, damages, bending, loose, missing or signs of abnormal wear, tear or any breakage or damage that may result in the king pin to fail. In such case, semi-trailer owners shall not operate their semi-trailer and shall communicate immediately with ABS to take all measures in order to proceed with the appropriate repair. How Remedy Component Differs from Recalled Component :
Identify How/When Recall Condition was Corrected in Production : New design of the coupling plate that will be able to withstand loads based on collected road load data.
After receiving recent claims regarding the failure of the king pin in some of ABSโ semi-trailers, ABS has investigated the cause of said failures. We stopped the delivery of every units beggining of november 11 and every trailer stock will be repaired before delivery. By the end of december we started back the production line with the new coupling plate design Recall Schedule :
