February 17, 2023 NHTSA CAMPAIGN NUMBER: 23V100000
Blower Motor Wiring May Overheat and Cause Fire
A wiring harness that overheats increases the risk of a fire.
NHTSA Campaign Number: 23V100
Manufacturer Daimler Vans USA, LLC
Components VISIBILITY, ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
Potential Number of Units Affected 52,993
Summary
Daimler Vans USA, LLC (DVUSA) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Mercedes-Benz
Sprinter
VS30 and Freightliner
Sprinter
VS30 vehicles. The heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) blower motor circuit may be inadequate, which can allow the wiring harness to overheat.
Remedy
Owners are advised to only operate the HVAC front blower in manual (not automatic) mode whenever the engine is on. Do not use the maximum blower or lowest/highest temperature settings until the remedy is performed. Dealers will relocate and replace the fuse and wiring harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed June 26, 2023. Owners may contact DVUSA customer service at 1-877-762-8267. DVUSA’s number for this recall is 8297010.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.

Modify Interior Blower Motor Fuse Layout
This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to modify the interior blower motor fuse layout on approximately 3,539 MY19-20 Freightliner Sprinter
vans. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from customers. All affected VINs will be flagged โOPENโ in VMI and cannot be sold until remedied.
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Freightliner
vehicles, has determined that on certain Sprinter
(907 platform) vehicles, the fuse layout of the interior blower motor might not meet the requirements for prolonged operation at the highest blower setting. Ambient and assembly space temperatures as well as prolonged usage, could cause the wiring harness to overheat. Consequently, a risk of fire during operation and a risk of injury cannot be ruled out.
What Weโre Doing
An authorized Freightliner Sprinter
dealer will replace the fuse and its supply line, as well as relocate the fuse for the interior blower within the fuse box. In the interim, to prevent the possibility of a thermal event, the front blower should only be operated in manual (not automatic) mode whenever the engine is on. Customers are informed to not use the maximum blower or lowest/highest temperature settings.
Parts
Parts are available
Given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for a dealer to sell or lease any new vehicles in dealer inventory covered by this recall notification until the vehicle has been repaired. It is MBUSAโs policy not to sell Certified Pre-Owned(CPO) vehicles
with an open recall. Loaner and demonstrator vehicles may continue to be driven, but must not be retailed until repaired. Additionally, given this notice, it is a violation of Federal Law for rental companies to rent vehicles covered by this notification until the vehicle has been repaired.

Chronology :
In February 2022 โ as part of its ongoing field monitoring efforts โ MBAG reviewed reported thermal events involving Sprinter vehicles. The available evidence regarding those reported events was limited due to multiple factors and did not allow for identification of any specific ignition source or burn pattern. MBAG then commenced with further and more complex analyses and intensified review of potentially relevant field data.
In fall 2022, MBAG received two additional field reports of thermal events (from outside the US). Both events appeared to involve the area of the vehicleโs fuse box. Based on that information, MBAG conducted an intensive engineering review of the involved vehicles, including onsite inspections. MBAG was also able to retrieve physical evidence, including damaged parts that allowed it to conduct computer tomography imaging and other analyses.
In early November, the technical data and analyses were evaluated to identify potential failure mechanisms, and potential consequences. To validate the findings and hypotheses of these analyses, MBAG ran driving tests including multiple temperature measurements throughout December 2022. In combination, the results of MBAGโs analyses and driving tests led to a more detailed preliminary determination regarding the root cause.
In January 2023, MBAG technically evaluated the results from the driving tests and compared them with field data and evidence. In parallel the population of potentially affected vehicles in the field was analyzed and potential remedies were investigated.
On February 10, 2023 MBAG determined that a potential safety risk cannot be ruled out and decided to conduct a recall.
MBAG is currently aware of 11 field reports of apparently similar events involving Sprinter vans in the US.
MBAG is not aware of any cases of death or injury related to this defect.

This is to notify you of a Recall Campaign Launch to modify the interior blower motor fuse layout on approximately 3,539 MY19-20
Freightliner Sprinter vans. The recall campaign will be visible on the www.safercar.gov website and may generate questions from
customers. All affected VINs will be flagged โOPENโ in VMI and cannot be sold until remedied.
Background
Issue
Mercedes-Benz AG (โMBAGโ), the manufacturer of Freightliner vehicles, has determined that on certain
Sprinter (907 platform) vehicles, the fuse layout of the interior blower motor might not meet the
requirements for prolonged operation at the highest blower setting. Ambient and assembly space
temperatures as well as prolonged usage, could cause the wiring harness to overheat. Consequently, a
risk of fire during operation and a risk of injury cannot be ruled out.
What Weโre Doing
An authorized Freightliner Sprinter dealer will replace the fuse and its supply line, as well as relocate the
fuse for the interior blower within the fuse box. In the interim, to prevent the possibility of a thermal
event, the front blower should only be operated in manual (not automatic) mode whenever the
engine is on. Customers are informed to not use the maximum blower or lowest/highest
temperature settings.

MBAG is currently aware of 11 field reports of apparently similar events involving Sprinter vans in the US that occurred between August 2022 to December 2022. MBAG is not aware of any warranty claims nor cases of death or injury related to this defect. Description of Remedy :
Description of Remedy Program : As a precautionary measure, an authorized Mercedes-Benz Sprinter
dealer, will replace the fuse and its supply line as well as relocate the fuse within the fuse box. Owners are advised to only operate the front blower in manual (not automatic) mode whenever the engine is on. Do not use the maximum blower or lowest/highest temperature settings.
Dealers will relocate and replace the fuse and wiring harness, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed
