Cummins
, Inc. (Cummins
) is recalling certain PowerDrive 7000 electric drive systems. The System Control Module (SCM) may active the anti-rollback feature, causing the vehicle to reverse faster than expected.
Remedy
Dealers will update the SCM software, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed May 26, 2023. Owners may contact Cummins
customer service at 1-800-286-6467. Cummins

Chronology :
7/20/2022 – Cummins
received a report of this condition on two Blue Bird buses at a Canadian fleet customer.
(No accidents or injuries were reported.) At this time, field service engineers were on site with this customer and were able to evaluate the complaint.
7/21/2022 – 8/12/2022 – Cummins
conducted engineering tests and was able to replicate the condition.
8/12/2022 – 9/30/2022 – Cummins
conducted further testing to understand the cause and in conjunction with this testing, developed a preliminary calibration that addressed this condition on the vehicles from which the complaint originated.
9/30/2022 – 11/28/2022 Cummins
began a Product Safety Hazard Analysis and constituted a cross-functional team to conduct further vehicle evaluation comparing the vehicle performance with the original calibration and the preliminary new calibration.
11/28/2022 – 1/30/2023 – Cummins
gathered additional information regarding the operation of the anti-rollback feature, conducted an additional vehicle evaluation, and completed the Product Safety Hazard Analysis.
2/14/2023 – 3/20/2023 – Cummins
escalated the issue through multiple reviews in its Product Safety Defect Determination process including gathering additional information to answer questions from the Product Safety Defect Board and arranging a vehicle demonstration of the issue for the members of the Board.
3/20/2023 – Based upon the information developed during the investigation and the additional information, Cummins
Product Safety Defect Board decided to conduct a safety campaign to address this condition. To date, there have been no reports of accidents or injuries related to this condition, and no further complaints (other than the initial two that prompted this investigation.)

OEM Customer: We are writing to inform you that Cummins
Inc. has determined that a safety-related defect exists in certain PowerDrive 7000 BES CM0904 EV104B electric drivetrain systems that were manufactured between June 1, 2018, and October 30, 2021. Cummins
has initiated a recall of the subject drivetrain System Control Modules. Our records indicate that some of these components were shipped to you. A copy of Cummins
’ initial Part 573 Defect Notification report is enclosed. This notification was submitted to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) on March 27, 2023. As described in the Defect Notification, the System Control Module may activate the anti-rollback feature, causing the vehicle to move backwards uphill at a rate that may exceed certain drivers’ expectations. This may occur once the driver releases the brake while the vehicle is in reverse and pointing downhill on a grade greater than approximately 7%, possibly increasing the risk of a crash. Enclosed is a list of serial numbers for affected drivetrains that our records indicate were shipped to your plants. For drivetrains installed in vehicles that have left your control, we encourage you to make a safety defect determination in accordance with 49 USC 30118 et seq. and, as appropriate, to submit a Defect Notification to NHTSA in accordance with 49 CFR Part 573. will conduct the recall, including notifying owners pursuant to 49 CFR Part 577, performing the remedy, and submitting quarterly status reports to NHTSA. Cummins
is requesting that you provide the associated vehicle model identification, VINs and owner contact information to facilitate owner notification. Please work with your Cummins
account team leader to ensure that the requested information is provided to Cummins
as soon as possible. As an equipment manufacturer, Cummins
has no obligation to file a defect notification to Transport Canada for this recall. If an OEM has an obligation to report the defect to Transport Canada, we ask that you please provide the Transport Canada recall number for your vehicle recall to Cummins
