Description of Update:
There are some known instances where the tie rod weldments on the water tanks have weakened. Letters have been sent out to customers instructing them to take their impacted units to authorized Super Products Service Centers to have them inspected.
• Inspect the tie rod weldments which secure the water tanks at the top of the debris body.
• Inspect tie rod protrusion and weld size.
• Inspect the welds for any cracks.
• Remove and replace the tie rod weldments, if necessary.
• Install new cinch nuts and flat washers on any tie rods replaced.
Instructions for Super Products Stores:
Read the entire Service Bulletin and inspect vehicles as instructed. When needed, order parts through your standard ST/OT process. Fill out and sign the Completion of Work Form (page 10). Fill out the Tie Rod Inspection Details page (page 11 or 12) by marking which tie rod(s) needed to be replaced and include details as to why it needed to be replaced. Open a tech case in Salesforce and upload the Completion of Work Form, including the Tie Rod Inspection Details page, and a photo of the truck serial number plate. File for warranty reimbursement. Tag any replaced tie rods with the part number, location on the truck, and truck serial number. Retain these parts for 60 days, as we may request these be returned for factory inspection. Please note, a copy of this Service Bulletin, a fillable pdf of the Completion of Work Form, and the Tie Rod Inspection Details pages are available on the dealer portal.

Read the entire Service Bulletin and inspect vehicles as instructed. When needed, order parts as instructed below. Fill out and sign the Completion of Work Form (page 10). Fill out the Tie Rod Inspection Details page (page 11 or 12) by marking which tie rod(s) needed to be replaced and include details as to why it needed to be replaced. Scan or take a picture of the filled out and signed Completion of Work Form, Tie Rod Inspection Details page, and a photo of the truck serial number plate, and email it to [email protected]. Super Products will provide you with a Salesforce case number for the inspection and a Warranty Work Authorization. Reply to that email with an attached copy of your invoice with the case number written on it. Tag any replaced tie rods with the part number, location on the truck, and truck serial number. Retain these parts for 60 days, as we may request these be returned for factory inspection. Please note, a copy of this Service Bulletin, a fillable pdf of the Completion of Work Form, and the Tie Rod Inspection Details pages are available on the dealer portal.

Rod Inspection Instructions:
• Park the truck, turn the engine off, set the park brake, and place wheel chocks.
• Always wear a Personal Safety Harness during inspection and repair.
• Secure a ladder or ladder platform to the side of the debris body to reach the top of the debris tank.
• Locate the welded end of the Tank Strap Tie Rod at the top of the debris body. *Note: On Mud Dogs, the yellow boom guard will have to be removed to inspect two of the Tank Strap Tie Rods.

• Press the Tie Rod Gauge Tool (part #0045312) against the welded end of the Tank Strap Rod as shown in the picture below. *Note: Hold the gauge tool across the center of the rod diameter. This test validates rod protrusion.
• Inspect for contact at the end of the tie rod and determine if the Tank Strap Tie Rod is GOOD or BAD.

• Turn the Tie Rod Gauge Tool around and press it against the welded end of the Tank Strap Tie Rod as shown in the picture below. *Note: Hold the gauge tool across the center of the rod diameter to accurately check the weld joint. This test validates weld thickness.

• Inspect for contact at the weld joint and determine if the Tank Strap Tie Rod is GOOD or BAD.
• Check for proper contact at the weld joint while holding the gauge tool in both vertical orientation and in horizontal orientation. If the contact is bad in either orientation, the Tank Strap Tie Rod is non-conforming and needs to be replaced.

• If the Tank Strap Tie Rod fails either test, then the Tank Strap Tie Rod is non-conforming and needs to be replaced.
• Repeat these two tests for each Tank Strap Tie Rod. Reposition the ladder as necessary.
• If you are unable to visually determine if the Tank Strap Tie Rod has passed the gauge tool test, the Tank Strap Tie Rod needs to be replaced.

• Visually inspect the weld on each Tank Strap Tie Rod. Check for rust, or flaking paint on or near the weld. This may be a sign of a crack in the weld. If any cracks are seen, or a crack is suspected, the Tank Strap Tie Rod needs to be replaced. Check for weld that does not track evenly or consistently around the center rod. If your inspection of a weld leads you to question weld integrity, replace the rod. See pictures below for examples of failed welds.
Replacement Instructions:
Please refer to all safety warnings on page 9 prior to proceeding with service repair.
To Remove and Replace a Tank Strap Rod:
• Water tanks need to be emptied completely before tie rod removal.
• Using a ratchet strap, secure the tank strap against the water tank. Once the tanks are secured, the Tank Strap Tie Rod can be removed. *Note: See instructions on page 8 to determine the best method to secure the water tanks.
• Reposition the ladder as necessary. Climb onto the top of the tank.
• Remove the clinch nut from the non-conforming tie rod using an impact driver or a wrench. Penetrating oil may be used. To assist in removal, a reciprocating saw may be used to cut the tie rod.
• Mud Dogs may require the removal of the cushioned U-bolt when removing tie rods located under the hose guard near the boom.
• Remove the Tank Strap Tie Rod.
• Install the new Tank Strap Tie Rod in the same orientation as the old Tank Strap Tie Rod.
• Install a new flat washer and thread a new clinch nut onto the Tank Strap Tie Rod.
• Tighten the clinch nut onto the Tank Strap Tie Rod until the tank strap firmly supports the water tank without crushing the plastic water tank. When properly tightened the tank strap should move +/- 1/8” when pushed and pulled by hand.
• Reinstall cushioned U-bolt(s), if applicable.
• Reinstall the yellow boom guard, if applicable.
• Remove the ratchet strap after confirming the proper tightness of the clinch nut.

Tank Retention – Method A:
Use Method A when replacing short tie rods (part #0001633): Attach the ratchet strap horizontally around the water tanks on the side of the truck where the rod needs to be replaced. Place the ratchet strap hooks onto the front of the debris body area and rear tailgate area (see red arrows below) and tighten the ratchet to secure the tank straps and tanks.
Tank Retention – Method B:
Use Method B when replacing long tie rods (part #0020053 or part #0001631): This method requires two ratchet straps. Attach a ratchet strap around the water tanks on the passenger and driver sides of the truck. Tighten the ratchets to secure the tank straps and tanks on both sides of the truck.

Why is this Camel or Mud Dog vehicle recalled?
The tank tie rod secures the water tank strap. If either the protrusion of the tank tie rod or the weld size is insufficient, the water tank strap may disengage causing it to fall from the side of the tank, increasing the risk of a motor vehicle crash or injury to individuals.
What will we do?
The corrective action is to inspect the tank tie rod protrusion and related welds and if necessary replace the tank tie rod with a tank tie rod with greater protrusion and a larger weld. This remedy will be performed free of charge. For Camel vehicles the repair takes about 1 hour to complete and for Mud Dog vehicles the repair takes about 1.5 hours to complete. Because of service scheduling requirements, it is likely that the dealer will need your Camel or Mud Dog vehicle for a period of time longer than this actual repair performance time.

REASON FOR THIS SAFETY RECALL:
On April 7, 2023, Alamo Group Inc., filed a Defect Information Report with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) informing the agency that in Camel and Mud Dog vehicles manufactured by Super Products, there may not be sufficient tank tie rod protrusion or weld size where the tank tie rod connects to the water tank strap. If the tank tie rod does not have sufficient protrusion and sufficient weld size, the water tank strap may become disengaged and fall from the side of the water tank, increasing the risk of a motor vehicle accident or injury to individuals.

REMEDY:
Remedy parts are available now. Dealers will inspect the rod protrusion and weld size with a proprietary tool that may be ordered from Super Products. The attached service procedure provides instructions for ordering the proprietary tool. If tank tie rod protrusion or weld size is insufficient, dealers will replace the tank tie rod and water tank strap in accordance with attached service procedure. This remedy will allow for proper rod protrusion and weld size. This inspection and service must be performed on all affected vehicles at no charge to the vehicle owner. Attached please find the proprietary tool and service procedure for completing this repair. For Camel vehicles the repair takes about 1 hour to complete, for Mud Dog vehicles the repair takes about 1.5 hours to complete.
REIMBURSEMENT:
Alamo Group will reimburse dealers for performing this remedy.

Description of the Defect : As a result of insufficient rod penetration and weld size, the tank strap tie rod could disengage from the square tabbed washer which connects the tie rod to the top of the tank water strap.

In May 2018, Super Products was notified by a customer that a tank strap tie rod had disengaged from the top of a Mud Dog vehicle, and the water tank strap had fallen down. In July 2019, Super Products received a similar report from a customer for a Camel vehicle. The Mud Dog and the Camel are the only two Super Product models that use this tank tie rod part. Super Products instituted a design change on August 1, 2019, to increase rod penetration and weld size for the tank strap tie rod on both models. Between January 2020 and June 2022, Super Products learned of 4 more incidents of tank strap tie rod weld failures for the affected vehicle population. The last of these incidents occurred in May 2022 while the Camel vehicle was operating on a public road and the tank strap fell and came into contact with the back window of another vehicle. This caused property damage to the other vehicle, but no accident or injury. After the May 2022 incident, Super Products conducted metallurgical tests on the tank tie rod and the connected square tabbed washer to confirm the cause as insufficient rod penetration and weld size. Super Products then examined other Camel and Mud Dog vehicles that were manufactured around the same time period as the 6 reported cases. Super Products examined 129 additional tank tie rods on 32 vehicles. As a result of the investigation, one additional vehicle was identified on which the tank tie rod had been replaced with a threaded rod, but Super Products could not confirm if the original tank tie rod had disengaged before the repair with the threaded rod was made. Also, through the course of the investigation, Super Products discovered cracked welds on 9 tank tie rods, but none of the rods were disengaged. All 9 cracked tank tie rods were replaced. In October 2022, during the course of the investigation a customer reported another disengaged tank tie rod. On March 31, 2023, Alamo decided to declare a voluntary safety recall to remedy this issue. Descriptive Information : The recall population has been determined based on examination of manufacturing and quality control processes for certain tank tie rod components in the identified Camel and Mud Dog models above. The vehicles in the recall population differ from other vehicles in that the tank tie rods in the recalled Camel and Mud Dog vehicles do not have sufficient rod penetration or weld size with the tabbed washer that connect the tank tie rod to the water tank strap.

Description of the Defect : As a result of insufficient rod penetration and weld size, the tank strap tie rod could disengage from the square tabbed washer which connects the tie rod to the top of the tank water strap.

In May 2018, Super Products was notified by a customer that a tank strap tie rod had disengaged from the top of a Mud Dog vehicle, and the water tank strap had fallen down. In July 2019, Super Products received a similar report from a customer for a Camel vehicle. The Mud Dog and the Camel are the only two Super Product models that use this tank tie rod part. Super Products instituted a design change on August 1, 2019, to increase rod penetration and weld size for the tank strap tie rod on both models. Between January 2020 and June 2022, Super Products learned of 4 more incidents of tank strap tie rod weld failures for the affected vehicle population. The last of these incidents occurred in May 2022 while the Camel vehicle was operating on a public road and the tank strap fell and came into contact with the back window of another vehicle. This caused property damage to the other vehicle, but no accident or injury. After the May 2022 incident, Super Products conducted metallurgical tests on the tank tie rod and the connected square tabbed washer to confirm the cause as insufficient rod penetration and weld size. Super Products then examined other Camel and Mud Dog vehicles that were manufactured around the same time period as the 6 reported cases. Super Products examined 129 additional tank tie rods on 32 vehicles. As a result of the investigation, one additional vehicle was identified on which the tank tie rod had been replaced with a threaded rod, but Super Products could not confirm if the original tank tie rod had disengaged before the repair with the threaded rod was made. Also, through the course of the investigation, Super Products discovered cracked welds on 9 tank tie rods, but none of the rods were disengaged. All 9 cracked tank tie rods were replaced. In October 2022, during the course of the investigation a customer reported another disengaged tank tie rod. On March 31, 2023, Alamo decided to declare a voluntary safety recall to remedy this issue.
