Summary
Altec Industries, Inc. (Altec) is recalling certain 2021-2023 DT85 Digger Derricks. The Boom pressure limiter may allow the boom to lift loads above the rated capacity and over the Hydraulic Overload Protection (HOP) setting.
Remedy
Altec will provide instructions to owners to test the boom lift pressure limiter setting and set it to the correct pressure, free of charge. Owner notification letters are expected to be mailed July 7, 2023. Owners may contact Altec’s customer service at 1-877-462-5832. Altec’s number for this recall is CSN 3078.
Notes
Owners may also contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration Vehicle Safety Hotline at 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), or go to www.nhtsa.gov.
Chronology :
On April 11, 2023, a customer contacted Altec to discuss Digger Derrick
stability testing. A Mobile Service Technician was dispatched to the unit and found that the pressure limiter setting and HOP were set incorrectly. The manufacturing plant investigated the issue and, on April 18, 2023, found that a checksheet for the pressure setting process for the DT85 unit was wrong. The recorded value on the checksheet was 2700 psi, and the correct value was 2450 psi. The production checksheet was updated.
On April 24, 2023, an investigation was initiated to determine if units in the field could have an incorrect pressure limiter setting. After reviewing the investigation results on May 5, 2023, Altec determined that a defect could exist on certain DT85 digger derricks, and affected unit owners should be notified. There were no other warranty claims or field reports identified. There have been no accidents, injuries, or deaths related to this issue.
